TKR Heathertee right knee...

Heathertee, I strongly suggest that you let the family members be the ones on their feet. No reason they can't wait on you for a change----and your knee will thank you by not swelling up and hurting.

Great flexion number---those little milestones mean a lot. And a warm pool does sound inviting. Course I live in the south, and we've had great weather for several weeks now with everything blooming like mad and pollen turning everything yellow.

Take care---don't overdo just because family has come to visit--and keep us posted. We care. Judy

A HAPPY EASTER to all my new friends here!

Well, Judy, of course you are right, but someone had to do the shopping... and the vacuuming... and the dusting.

All that done, I think I'll let Ros and son-in-law Neil do the cooking! They should arrive momentarily; meanwhile, I have been a good person and done all my exercises! Wait, my halo is slipping...

vacuuming and dusting can wait!..it'll still be there when you're ready !

Isn't THAT the truth! I did do some cleaning but just enough to get by... the Easter weekend was a huge success and lots of fun, as I hope it was for everyone here...

Now, back to work on recovery! :hapydancsmil:

Here I am at the two month anniversary of the knee. Things are still progressing very slowly.

I saw my surgeon last week and he's discharged me; very happy with the appearance and function of the knee; range of motion still about 116* but he said that will improve as we go along.

I asked about the difficulty of sleeping at night and he assured me that this will last for many months (!). Actually this is the most helpful thing any provider has said to date, since all I have to do is remember that this is NORMAL, and that goes a long way to making me feel better!

The state of my feet is something else entirely. Neuropathy has progressed to the point my arches are collapsing (left one flat as a pancake), and after just a bit of being on my feet they hurt terribly. I'm seeing a foot specialist next month and hopefully will get some solutions, plus time may work some magic.

The third thing is, he did a full-body X-ray and found that as I suspected, the right hip IS deteriorating (look at the replacement date!), and has slipped just a little, plus some rotation has been diagnosed. Oh dear... I hope this can wait until the knee has finished healing!

They are right, getting old isn't for sissies....

On edit, I had the first session of water therapy and it was wonderful! I felt loose and relaxed with no pain at all that evening! Next one tomorrow morning and I am looking forward to it.

Right you are about getting old---but the alternative is only for those who have totally given up.

That water therapy should be just the ticket for improving the knee and will be kind to your hip at the same time.

That foot speicalist should be able to get you in some shoes, possibly with orthortics that will help your feet. 'Cause I know that when your feet are hurting, nothing feels good.

Take care of yourself, take it easy, watch what you're doing to keep that hip from getting worse. Then when your knee is back to "normal" you can tackle that issue.

Keep us posted. We care.

Thank you, Judy; it helps so much to just know someone else cares, and that's what this forum is all about!

Your last line is right on the money....I can't complain too much about the hip. It's done yeoman duty for over 20 years and like everything else, it's getting pretty worn. I am doing everything to protect it, even using the tool to put on socks in the morning, although i can now reach my right foot again.

My surgeon does anterior hip replacements, which I had never heard of, so that will be another thread in the hip section when the time comes. I love the sound of a procedure that has none of the old "hip precautions".

My sister has had both hips done---the first the regular posterior way. The second was done the new anterior way. She LOVED it!

I could not find anyone locally who did the anterior when I needed mine done and with a semi-invalid hubby it just wasn't possible to go out of town. But they do a much better job posteriorly now, and I had no problems at all. Somehow they manage not to cut through muscle as they used to. The only thing that kept me from being up and around pretty normally in just a couple of weeks (that's how well I did) was that my implant was cementless and I couldn't put but 20% weight on it for 6 weeks and then just 50% for another 2 weeks.

Take care.

I gather it's a fairly new procedure but sounds well worth it.

Mine also were cementless and I have been pleased with the results. I was a bit concerned to hear they used cement for the knee but maybe due to the nature of the joint, they have to? In any case, I have read that medical cements are now far more reliable than in the past.

It sounds like you and your knee are quickly becoming good buddies! GREAT!!!

As for your hips.....don't worry about them. A revision should not be a problem for you when it is time. We have a number of BoneSmarties who have had them for various reasons and they do just fine. The new implants may very will last you the rest of your life!!

Jamie, right from the start I have said that the implant doesn't feel mechanical at all, but exactly like my own knee. This is even more true as the swelling has subsided...although oh, so slowly!

As for your last line, I truly and devoutly hope so!

Now I have to confess that since I've been doing the water therapy, I have really slacked off on the "land" exercises, except for daily stretching which seems to be an absolute physical requirement near the end of a day spent largely on my feet. My brothers and sisters all are here to renovate this house which was our mother's, as it is to be sold at the end of June according to her will. I was able to do much less last fall and winter than I had planned, so the work in progress keeps me hopping.

When the house is sold, I will be living in my camper until a senior apartment opens up for me, so I do need to keep fit, more or less. It's a van camper and a bit cramped, but has done well for me for some very long trips in the past ten years. I anticipate no real problems.

Wow! Only three weeks since I last posted and it seems like a lifetime. My brothers and sisters were here until last week and made me get rid of about two-thirds of my stuff so "the house will show better". It was hell. I was on my feet packing boxes for a good eight hours every day and the knee rebelled every night with swelling and pain. I had to do it or they'd have thrown everything out or sold it.

The only thing that saved my sanity was the pool therapy, and that continues. They all have gone home, thank goodness, and all I have to do is keep the house in a nice condition to show. That's easy when you're the only person living there!

Once again, I cannot say enough about the benefits of getting into a 90* therapy pool and walking, doing high leg raises, stretches and in the deep end, "bicycling". 45 minutes of this and my knee is loose and comfortable for the rest of the day, and most of the night!

Heathertee, good to hear you and your knee survived prepping the house for showing. Hope there are no problems selling it.

Your pool therapy sounds sooooo good. I didn't know that any of the rehab centers in my area had a pool until two months ago. Had I known I sure would have gotten a script for water therapy.

Take care of yourself and keep us posted. We care.
