[Bonesmart.org] Had THR on November 19
Hope you and yours have had a wonderful Christmas holiday with lots of family fellowship and sharing of gifts and lots of good food to eat.

I’ll be looking for you at the BoneSmart annual New Year’s Party. It’s been a very eventful year for most of us---and will be a very eventful year coming up for others of us looking forward to surgery in the new year.

Remember to bring food and drink to share---and pictures are always appreciated and loads of fun to share.

SEE YOU AT THE PARTY!!!!!

@ValerieM......at this early stage of recovery, you should not be carrying around a 14 pound baby! Please don't do that - there is no "good" way to do it! You are still healing and you need to take things easy for quite a while longer. That means serious amounts of resting and elevating that leg each day. Ice if you can. And take something for any pain you experience. While you're visiting, resist the temptation to "do things" around the house. You'll pay the price if you overdo it.

Glad to hear the shingles are better. Enjoy your visit and have a safe trip home....lots of rest and stretch stops!!!

I know I probably made a terrible last minute decision to visit my daughter and grandson for the holidays I was so lonely and down and of course feeling better because I was resting when I needed to and for the most part doing what I should. I've been here 2 weeks with 1 week to go and I am really paying the piper. I hurt so much it brings me to tears at times. On the other hand I've enjoyed seeing my daughter & grandson. I'm doing my best to get through the next week and drive home then I see my OS for my first follow up should be interesting.

Is being out of breath so quickly normal when doing things even just walking through a store I have to stop and rest to catch my breath?

Thank you for the feedback it helps me stay in perspective and brightens my day!

Happy 2014!!

Hi @ValerieM, you need to go back to my post #27 and re read the articles, especially this one..

https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/healing-phases-nutrition.21918/ You are in approximately the Remodeling phase (3 weeks - years).

May I suggest that you and your daughter sit down and read the article which provides a glimpse into what is happening around your THR.. It might help your daughter understand how complex and major this surgery is and how important it is to allow the healing to happen.

You are doing way too much for this early in your recovery, and running this risk of setting yourself up for issues further into your recovery, none of us want to see this happen.

@ValerieM So sorry you are having a tough time of it lately. It's a toughie when you want to do something and your body won't play ball. Sounds like you had a heck of a lonely, painful journey up to your daughters. It must be lovely to be with them but you must really take it easy honey....try and rest as much as you can. The breathing problem sounds like your body telling you to slow down but I'm sure you really know that. Please take care on the journey home....let's us know that you get home safe and sound and good luck with your OS appointment. Love Chrissie xxx

Hello my BS friends! Just a quick note to check in since you are so good at keeping me in line lol I'm hanging in there still have some pain but I've greatly reduced the carrying of my grandson Dominic (whom I'm attaching a pic of to show why it's so hard to not carry him everywhere ) I'm getting some anxiety about the drive home :( I only have 2 1/2 more days with them this visit. It's so hard! Then they may be moving 2 hours further due to my son in law's job :( I'm having a rough time sleeping at night because of the pain but once I get my OS appointment out of the way Thursday which is another 160 miles round trip for me I'm seriously going to take advantage of my bed, tv & my Keurig !! Well this turned out to be a long note, that's what happens when you're talking to friends! I will post once I get home Wednesday or possibly Thursday after my appointment. Hope everyone is having the best day possible!!

Hi @ValerieM He looks sooo cute....worth every ounce of pain I'd say. Enjoy your last few days...lots of cuddles and kisses. Take it slow on your way home...lots of breaks so as not to get stiff or those muscles will pay you back big time. Hope the OS appointment goes well despite another long journey. Take care and good luck..Chrissie xxx

@Hoppy Nanny, thank you I think he's pretty darn cute too!! Quick question, my drive home is 320 miles how often would you suggest I stop and stretch? I didn't do enough coming here because I wanted to arrive and be out of the car

You should stop at least every hour for 5-10 minutes, stretch and walk around a bit....more if you find yourself hurting or stiffening up. You can use Tylenol for pain or stiffness.

@Poppet Thank you so much for thinking of me and checking in! Means a lot

@Jamie- thank you for your quick response! I will definitely do that as I don't want to pay the piper later

Agree with Jamie honey....could you stop st the services and walk....First time I did only a two and a half hour journey I stopped twice ....needed to really step it out. My hubby said I looked like Herr Hitler stomping about !! I also took a pack of peas (as an ice pack) wrapped in a Tea towel ( or pillowcase) on
my hip and a hottie bottle on my back..as suggested by Poppet...worked a treat hardly stiff at all. Hope it all goes well @ValerieM...will await your update...thinking of you..Chrissie xxx

Feeling so down from the constant pain 24/7, when does it get better :'( I'm 9 weeks out tomorrow and know I've overdone it in the beginning but since my first post op appt Jan 9th my OS said things look good on the X-rays and I'm still in the critical stage of healing & to do everything slow & methodical. He said to continue using crutches outside the home maybe taking short walks without them. He didn't prescribe anymore pain meds and said he'd see me again in 9 weeks. He offered PT if I wanted but believes the best therapy for the hip is just walking. I just can't take the constant pain anymore mainly in my groin, down my lateral incision & pelvic bone. It ranges anywhere from a 5-8. Just laying in bed typing this I feel the pain in my groin. If I rest I hurt, if I walk I hurt, if I go potty it hurts to sit and get up, if I do light housework I hurt. I am just at my wit's end. My OS said I look much better and walk somewhat better but another 9 weeks I don't know how I'll get through it

Also is there a specific way to stand from the sitting position like from a chair or couch that doesn't hurt so darn bad??

Thank you for letting me whine

You are in pain! You need to be taking something for it. Call your surgeon's office and tell him how badly you are hurting. If he won't give you something like Tramadol, contact your GP. In the meantime, try taking Extra Strength Tylenol, 1000mg every 6 hours (1000mg, 4 times in a 24 hour period is the maximum safe dosage). Ice the area that's hurting as well. Don't let this pain go untreated. No one said you should just soldier through it, did they????

You said your doctor did not prescribe pain meds at your appt but did you tell him about your pain? Maybe he thought you were not in pain? I would definitely ask - and maybe discuss why so much pain still.

Oh sweetheart....so sorry that you are still in so much pain ......I'd be whining..and shouting loud to get some more pain relief if it were me...are you taking anything @ ValerieM ? Please ring your GP and get something that can sort it out otherwise you will not be able to move on at all.....you ask about getting up from a chair...the only way I got up comfortably was from a high chair, with arms, and to extend the operated leg out towards. I've been wondering how you were getting on....please let us know that you speak to someone about this continued pain and how you get on....thinking of you...Chrissie xxxx

@ValerieM Call your surgeon's office and/or GP and tell 'em you need better pain control. Insist on it! Also get another appointment to see what is going on. I've had both of mine replaced and am experiencing pain I think is either sciatic or the piriformis, and I see my OS again tomorrow. I don't think mine is actually from the hip implant, but I need to figure out what is causing it. Maybe you've strained a muscle or it's bursitis or something -- whatever it is, you need pain relief. You shouldn't be having that much pain this far out.

I hope you get an answer soon -- I know how frustrating and depressing it is. But you have to insist on good pain relief to get better.

Peace and love to you.
