THR Dislocation mid flight

Well gee Annie. I'm glad I didn't try to tell you anything you probably already know. Rooting for you!!!

Hello all. I posted about 6 months ago worried that my 7 yr old left THR had moved or subluxed but my consultant seemed to dismiss this as probably just a muscular problem.

My hip is ceramic and uncemented as I was only 51 when it was replaced. I do regular walking, Pilates and swimming and do regular hip strengthening exercases.

On Monday I was 2 hours into a flight to go on holiday and I literally just leant to my left to get a newspaper out of my husbands seat pocket and my hip completely dislocated!!!!!

Long story but the plane was diverted and my hip was eventually put back in place at a Spanish hospital (a very traumatic experience all round) I now have an appointment to see someone next week at a regional specialist hospital but am very concerned about this and petrified it will happen again or I will need to have some revision surgery!

Any comments or advice would be welcome

Oh how frightening. I can understand being petrified of recurrence. I’m sure someone on here has some experience. Take it easy until you see specialist, hopefully you will have answers soon.

Wow y
How distressing that must have been for you.
Good luck with everything.

Oh my stars...awful. So they put it back in...don't have any experience whether revision is a given....tagging @Josephine, our forum medical sage...you do this by putting @ sign in front of someone's name to alert them, but obviously I have already done that.
She will be around at some point.
So sorry for your situation.

@Annie M Looking at your signature it seems this is not the first dislocation you have experienced. I hope you are not seeing the original surgeon who did your THR. You really should research a revision specialist. Josephine may be able to recommend someone in your area.

Meanwhile if it were me I would restrict activity. Were you on any restrictions after your THR? You may want to go back to them until you see someone about this.

Please keep us updated.

Hi Annie! I have merged your new thread with your previous thread, so we'll have all the information you've shared here in one place. That will make it easier for us to try to help you. I'm really sorry that you are still experiencing problems with dislocation. I hope Josephine is able to provide some useful information for you.

Thank you for that @alexthecat Very helpful!

@Annie M I'm so sorry to hear of your awful experience. I have no doubt that your hip needs to be revised and would urge you to see a different surgeon.

As a matter of interest, who was you original surgeon and are you going back to him this time?
I urge you not to do that. If you will allow me, I would be more than happy to find 2 or 3 alternative names for you to consider.

Unbelievable, Annie
I am so sorry....what an experience.
Hopefully you soon get this figured out so you can move forward.
Prayers for direction and resolution.
Sending a warm hug :console2:

I have posted here before. I was wondering if anyone has holiday insurance which covers if you have had a late dislocation of THR. I dislocated my left THR (done May 2010) on a flight to Cape Verde in December and some may remember my story but sorry I don't know how to find the original post.

I have had insurance with Staysure for many years as it covers both mine and my husbands pre existing conditions and they are brilliant. At the moment I am awaiting CT and MRI on my hip then see specialist on Feb 1st. At the moment they rightly will not cover me until we know what is happening. I am just trying to gather some information for if I need to shop around again.

My hip has stayed in place so far (4 weeks later) but I am experiencing some pain down the front of my thigh down to my knee which is something I have never had before so any thoughts would be welcome. I have an appointment with my specialist physio tomorrow

Thanking you all in advance

@Annie M You might notice I merged your second thread into your existing recovery thread. This way we have your whole history in one place in case we need to advise you.

Sounds like you really need to find a revision surgeon. This should not keep happening. I really don't think a physio is going to help at all and any activity might indeed do more harm.

In reference to travel insurance, I found that specialist companies who insure people with long term conditions are the way to go. They might be a bit more expensive and you do need to declare everything. But you it's better to pay up front and not end up with a huge bill.

Thank you Jaycey. I am only seeing my physio to update him. I have my CT booked for the 13th and MRI on the 20th then see the specialist at Wrightington hospital again on the 1st Feb. He is a hip revision specialist and he wants the full picture before deciding what if anything he can do.

I do pay £500 a year for our travel insurance and in the last year have had to cancel or curtail 2 holidays so in effect I have had 10 years premiums back. I will update here once I know what is happening.....thanks again

Whew! Glad you are getting all the diagnostics and seeing a specialist at Wrightington. You are in good hands! Please do keep us updated!

Today I obtained a copy of the letter from the consultant to my GP. It says that he wonders from the plain x rays whether the stem may be a little bit retroverted as the lesser trochanter is more obvious than on the right hand side. He goes on to say that as I have now had 2 dislocations and one subluxation this has to be looked into further. I am having a CT scan of my left leg tomorrow to assess my rotationsl profile and an MRI next week to assess the integrity of the abductors around the hip.

Thanks again everyone and wonder if anyone else has had this retroverted thong? I am getting some pain down the front of my thigh that I have never had before even pre op

How do you edit the foot notes on your messages? Mine reads wrong. Should be Lt THR May 2010. 1st dislocation 9 days post op (reduced under GA and brace for 6 weeks. Subluxation July 2017. 2nd dislocation 11th Dec 2017 (reduced under sedation)
