Bilateral TKR Carolina Writer on the road to recovery

Hey Kelly, it's good to see you back on the forum. Is the rolling stool working out OK? I wish you could get some more time off, but I certainly know how it is when bills are due! Do you have a way you can take and then ice your knees during the workday? I pray you get over this stress to your knees really quickly.

It is very tricky to elevate at work, I know. I tried putting my leg up on another chair, but chairs are not footstools. Somehow they just aren't set up for elevating. :heehee: I tried putting my leg up on my desk --so my leg from the knee down was on the desk. Not great and somewhat precarious.
Do you drive to work & park close to the building? What about lying down in your back seat with an ice pack? Grasping at straws here.

At the least if you could leave early on Friday and just crash with your leg up at home that might help. And total knee tlc for the weekend.

Hi @kneeper The rolling stool is working quite well. The swelling has improved a lot using it. One of my coworkers who had TKR last September throws his leg up on the desk. He's in an office though. Whatever works, right? :-)

I am parking close to the building now, although I wasn't last week. I am taking off work this afternoon and am ready for it. I was on my feet much too long last night preparing for a friend's birthday. By the time I got home, I was completely wiped out. In general, I've noticed more aches and pains since going back to work. All part of the process, right? I can't wait for the day when my life doesn't evolve around my knees.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.
Kelly

Hello all, I'm now about 5 months post op. I am experiencing returning quad pain these days, which has me rather concerned. The muscles along the sides of the thighs hurt too. If I push around, my muscles are sore and painful - rather like I've had a really hard workout at the gym. But I haven't. I've not gotten back to the gym. I get some relief doing some stretching and going up and down stairs and walking the halls at work. The pain subsides and feels better then the pain is back within 30 minutes if not less. I have a desk job and have wondered if I'm not getting up enough and moving around?

I know I'm still healing, but I feel like I'm going backward and not forward. Maybe this is normal? I'm at a loss. I see my OS at the end of September for the 6 month check up. I'd appreciate any opinions and advice.

I find that I have to try to keep a balance between walking and sitting to keep my knee and leg happy. If I'm doing too much of one or the other I have some stiffness and pains in different parts of my leg. Lately I've gone back to icing more at the end of my day. Unfortunately I can't do it during the day.

Hi Kelly! I know the feeling of one step forward and two steps back, but hang in there. You will make progress. Until I passed the 6 month milestone, I thought I would never get over this. Now, I just have swelling - that makes the knee tight and is uncomfortable. How is your gait? I turn my foot out ever so slightly and that makes my knee have a twinge and it clicks more. If I really pay attention to my walking, and turn that foot inward (actually straight ahead) it feels better. Try to get up and walk every hour. My quad still hurts going the stairs and at times going down, feels like I am ripping the muscles in two. I am still needing to strengthen the quads. Good luck!

Hey Kelly. Good to see you back on the forum. I wish you had better news, though. Maybe getting up and walking more is the key. It's worth a try.

Hi @Timetolive . Thanks so much for your post. It does feel like two steps forward and one step back most days. My gait is pretty good, I think. But I really have to concentrate on walking correctly, meaning walking thru each step from heel to toe. Keeping my head up versus looking down while I'm walking, and on it goes. There's so much to re-learn. My right foot has always - as far as I can remember anyhow - turned a bit outward. I'm trying to be mindful of keeping my foot straight. This isn't something I've given thought to at all until I read your post. Yes, my quads feel like they're being ripped in two also going down steps too. I also need do work on quad strengthening, esp. on the right. For the past couple years, my right leg has been considerably weaker. It continues to be my problem child in recovery as well. I'm going to find a swimsuit and get to the Y to do some work in the pool. I think this may help too along with the other recommendations.

Hi @sistersinhim good to see you too!

Kelly

Good to see you again on here. I'm usually here every day. I get a lot of comfort from my BS friends. How are you doing?

Hi, @Carolina Writer it's nice to catch up with another April Rainbow. I'm a week after you, and it hasn't been plain sailing for me either. Like you I'm still getting healing pain which I hoped would be much better by now. My OS says full recovery can take 12-18 months. It's very difficult to find a balance between doing to much and not enough. Be interesting to see what your OS thinks, I hope you get some reassurance.

Kelly, heel -toe is something to concentrate on. My foot was turned out slightly also before surgery, but the OS reminded me he put me back together "straight" hahahahaha! It feels like I am walking pigeon toed when I am in fact, just turning the foot straight. As in life, this too shall pass. Hang in there. It does get better.
