BossK's recovery thread

I think I recall having to be on antibiotics for 5 days before any dental work
We don't do this in the UK and I absolutely wouldn't take antibiotics for any 'just in case' situation anyway. How stupid could you get? It's thinking like that has us in the grip of MRSA and no working antibiotics to help us.

@Celle I hope this isn't going to turn in to a big procedure! The article I can't open for some reason , but my OS nurse called and said if they do a procedure, I am going to have to be on antibiotics for a week afterward.

Hallelujah, it was only an old filling that had come loose. Even bigger hallelujah- those flipping compression stockings are off!! My PT said to go for it since I technically had less than 24 hours to go. Tomorrow makes six weeks since LTKR, and I even made it to work twice this week for short visits to see my students. Some normalcy returning feels so good!

Tastes of normalcy are only lovely and gives us a taste of what's to come. I went in one morning a week or so before I went back part time. I had never been out of the classroom for more than 4 days before my TKR, so coming back after such a long period was strange.

Frustrated. Got a little too crazy in PT and still hurting 3 days later. I hope I haven't been set back.:(

You obviously have angered your baby knee. The tissues are inflamed and rebelling with pain. I never took pt for any of my 11 knee surgeries, but did things I needed to, to take care of the house and/or yard. When I would overdo it would take many days to overcome my over zealous activities. So, it normal for you to still be hurting. As your knee heals a little more, the days of hurting aren't as many. It has gotten to the point now that when I have a fairly heavy day of physical activity, then I have to ice and elevate for only a day in between my next work day. I really am uncomfortable if I don't take a day of rest in between. I also rest and ice off and on during that day of extra hard work. You will get there. But, not right now. Now, you need rest, ice and elevation! Your knee is an infant and needs to be treated with that loving care that you would give an infant.

Good points all around, @sistersinhim. I am so surprised as the swelling isn't anything major, but the pain and times it won't "catch" when walking makes me think the swelling/fluid collecting is much deeper. I'm definitely telling my PT to take it easy tomorrow, if I go at all!

I wouldn't go and spend the day icing and elevating to get that fluid out of there. After all, that's what swelling is! If you go with your knee swollen inside like it is, is it only going to aggravate it even more. This is a very sloooow recovery! Patience is the key. Something that is so hard to do, especially at your young age. I'm sure you're used to go, go, going! Now, you can't. If you do, you'll only slow down that healing. Please follow the BS way and you'll have success with less pain. We experienced knee replacement people know!

A few days away from PT will let your knee settle down and won't hurt your knee at all. @nancyjo had her TKR at Mayo Clinic, they are no longer prescribing PT for TKRs. If The Mayo says it's ok...:thumb:

Really? If the Mayo Clinic is saying no, I'm impressed! I'll definitely take a PT break.

I had a RTKR and was back teaching part-time at 6 weeks. But I had pre-habbed the leg for 3 months prior to surgery, lived only a 3-minute drive from school, and my school was small without stairs. Short corridors too.

When in therapy I had the electrical stimulation thing done. I was willing to try. Not good! Set me back mentally as my leg felt like it was cracking into a million pieces[emoji12]I told my surgeon and his PA. They said only do what helps you and gives you progress. If this is not, you don't have to do it (as I cried in the arms of the PA)...

My advice: its your leg or hip (and right now my broken arm!) that's involved and only you can make the pain call. I tried to let my left leg gently hang wile elevated two minutes and after 20 seconds was in tears big time. My surgeon said I was free to try anything and determine the time limits for myself. I worked the exercise at home starting at 10 seconds[emoji4] a few times a day and after three weeks I was 2 minutes at therapy with no pain. Be watchful and mindful at PT. If you get pressured, made to feel like you are "behind" and not measuring up, tell your surgeon. Mine was extremely helpful in dealing with this, and my PT team had his notes in my record.

How did you break your arm? The TENS didn't work for me either. For many it does.

My OS told me they believe in taking 2000mg. amoxicillin one hr. before any procedure where you can have an infection for 1 year.

Now I have a relative pushing me to hurry up and do the second knee within the next 6 months. While I'd like to get it over with, I can't bear the idea of going through this recovery period again so soon. I flat out said, "No way!" I don't think people understand how hard this is when it really looks like a lot of laying around.

Has anyone else experienced two replacements in a year's time? I can't bear the idea at the moment, even though in respect to the rest of my life it's a fairly short period of time to be out of commission.

Sorry to be so high maintenance, friends. I'm really wishing my OS believed in BTKR and I would have woken up with both of them done. But he doesn't, and I am alone most of the day so having one stronger leg was necessary.

I did my L 11/1 and the R 11/29. It has been a long 7 weeks but, I AM DONE! The L is quite happy and the R is getting there. I decided to give up 3-6 months once vs twice. Although I questioned the wisdom (and my sanity) in the first two weeks now, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. By springtime I should be good to go. I call my R knee "the free knee" because all my deductibles, co-pays and max out of pocket were met! Another bonus to my crazy choice.

I did have two replacements done months apart but unfortunately it was on the same knee! That means I have to a through this for a third time. I think as you get a little further out you will start to feel your old knee starting to slow down your progress. That's when you'll know it's time.

You are right, @newlybionic- I am already feeling the non-surgical knee, the right, starting to falter. This may be out of my hands. My R knee will be my "free" one, too. :)

Strangely, my quads went back to sleep on me the other day. We worked a lot on just stretching in PT because my ACL(?) had tightened up so much it was doing all the work for the muscles. I was more than okay with that!

I'm having struggles with my IT band tightening up. Lots of pain in the side of my lower leg- you can actually feel the muscles knotted up there. I've been walking a lot, but then rested it for two days. But today I go back to work and I am nervous about this pain! I'm guessing elevation and ice to continue?? Wish me luck! I am excited to see my students!
