Thanks , ye got worse this year when I decided to get it sorted .

I need to keep active , I cycle a lot , the added work is for the mind lol , the other benefit is the pain and leaving me with no doubt about my decision . I've also been isolating myself up until this year , pain and mild depression maybe not being as active as I was ??? I've never been one to get things sorted out medically without a wait . Hoping now the weather will stay good for the rest of the ''Summer'' in Ireland and get to use the patio for BBQs with friends around .

Hi PDH63,
I completely understand your fears about the THR (there is no going back from that one). With all my conviction that I'd had enough and wasn't going to leave my surgeon's office without a date, I had the closest thing to a panic attack I've ever had. My mind was frantically trying to convince me that some stem cell solution was mere moments away, and why can't I just keep getting shots till then? It only took till the shot wore off to remind me just why I couldn't wait. I will be getting mine before the end of November and although I'm nervous, it's going to be sooooo much better. I'm new to this forum too, but the level of information and encouragement is amazing. We are all in the right place :)

Hi PDH63.
I think you definitely made the right decision to schedule your surgery. October is a ways away so, IMO, I wouldn't start 'abusing' that hip quite yet. But I must admit I felt the same way when my surgery was a couple of weeks away. I don't know if people in Ireland used to watch Seinfeld, but for me I was reminded of the episode where Jerry was renting a car and the agent asked him if wanted to get renter's insurance on it. He replied, "Yeah, you better give me the insurance because I'm going to beat the HELL out of this thing." That was me only with my hip.

Anxiety about the surgery will come and go. For me it was mainly about two things; do I really need to get a THR , and for some reason I freak out about having a 'foreign object' in there taking the place of such a major part of my skeleton.
I had my THR done 2 weeks and 2 days ago and I'm already off almost all pain meds (I took 1 pain pill and 1 blood thinner pill yesterday). Of course everyone's recovery is different, but my physical therapist came by yesterday and I showed him that I can walk without crutches or a cane (although as he said I should keep using one crutch in case I get unstable). And I definitely use my crutch going up and down our stairs in the apartment building. Now it's mainly about building up walking muscles (short squats and calf exercises). And the thought of getting back to pain free activities keeps me going.

Good luck to you.
G.

Sassypants You sound like I did. "I will wait til there's a major breakthrough" like your stem cell comment. Then I read about anterior approach. Called the surgeon..he only does posterior. I said what the heck and he had an opening in four days. I hopped on it. Never looked back. I'm 8 weeks post op with some sore muscles but so glad I did it!

I've made all the pre op preperation appointments today , dentist and pre admission tests ( MRSA ) , all being done end of Sept .

It's becoming more and more real to me as time goes on and preperation is starting .
I'm surprised at myself at the moment I'm only getting the odd pang of fear and anxiety when thinking about the operation . I even visualise the surgeon making the first cut and my waking after the surgery and think my logical tendancies are telling me it's all about time and it being a '' great healer '' and I see myself getting back to normal living , better than before . I keep telling myself that hundreds of thousands of people have had this surgery and is not as bad as I make it out to be .

I know I'm going to have a lot of fear and anxiety the closer I get and that seems to be the hardest part from what has been said on the forum by those on ''the other side'' .

I have one major fear , is it ? , I imagine it is ? that everyone fears , that I won't go through with it on the day ?

I've had minor surgery a couple of times before and ( I used to fear ) don't fear the dentist no matter what has to be done and tell myself it's going to be ok , it'll be over before I know it and think about all the people on this site that I've followed going through the same thing and coming out ok and delighted they'd gone through it and felt fantastic afterwards and know I can do it .

Funny how fast I've gone downhill , extreme pain at night , lack of sleep , spending some nights in the arm chair for relief , out sick from work , sharper intense pain and locking with clicking , I need this .

11 weeks 2 days and counting , seems so far away lol . ( miracle cure in 11 weeks ?????????? lol )

Eleven weeks seems a long time, but the days/weeks will go quickly. Stick with us, we will get you to the line and across it :)

2 days gone already :yahoo: .

Thanks Poppet , I'll appreciate all the help .
This time next year I'll be saying to myself , ''what was all the fuss about''

PDH63 I'm scared to bits but know deep down I have to have this done. I have just over a month to wait and already the time has flown by since I was told I needed the op. Just think, by Christmas you will be running around and pain free :)

I went about getting resurfacing done in February , can't be done with Dysplacia , went back two months later , couldn't live properly , looked for a date in July for THR and had to put it back to October due to work threatening not to pay me for sick leave , still not cleared up , but time has flown so quickly .

lol , I haven't run since the 90's , didn't think about running again , looking forward to getting back to full fitness on the bike and try to run again , WOOHOO , something else I'll be getting back to .

I'm with you. I now have my date. Scary isn't it????

Yep, it's scary but I'm sure we will all look back and things its worth it :)

The Pre Op timeframe is the scariest period, but once you get close the fears change to optimism and looking forward to the future.. Six months down the track you won't remember the pre op days :)

Thank god for that!!!! Left work in tears. Very sensitive at the moment

Ah Vetgirl, my poor Aussie girl.. You will be on that emotional roller coaster, come and chat with us.. We have walked in your shoes hon :)

I'm walking ( limping :rotfl: ) in those shoes at the moment and found chatting on this site brilliant and is helping me cope with all the emotions involved can't thank people enough for being here . I think the fact that we are not alone makes all the difference and all the feelings are normal .

Thanks guys. I work with Alot of young people who I don't think get the implication of not being able to drive your kids around, relying on others etc...

I've been weepy getting my head around it all.....and am glad to know I'm not alone. On top of that its expensive ( goodbye holiday this year :tantrum: ) and all the possible complications are scary too

I know I'm not alone and that means a lot :yay: :yay: :yay:

PDH63 and others on this thread. I don't post as much as I should, because I've had the THR done and am now improving. But once you've accepted or embraced that this thing is going to happen and more importantly that it will help, the anxiety will probably lessen. At least it did for me.

I went to the beach for the first time in about 9 months with some visiting family and it didn't wipe me out like it used to. I'm 6 weeks post THR and although I can't say that I'm as good as new, I'm now walking unaided most of the time (not always). And, I am thinking seriously about trying to get back to work full time.

Vetgirl I am intimately acquainted with that emotional roller coaster, and it is no fun. For me, it comes and goes. I guess we've just got to roll with it and talk to the good people on this forum for support and understanding.

Peace and love to you and Oscar.

Hi Pat,

I am in the Feisties Club with you and thought I'd say hi. I admire how active you are in spite of the pain. That is tough to do! Hang in there!
