Quick postscript: re the flight home - was the easiest thing - as long as you get the booking to include 'medical support maybe needed' or such like, then you can ask at the service desk (in plenty of time) for assistance with boarding. In my case, that meant a golf buggy turning up before other passengers boarded, and taking me and husband out to plane, seeing me carefully on board and the air crew being especially nice to me.
We took a pillow with us for extra padding and that was nice. And I made sure I didn't need to use the plane loo at all as that would have been very difficult on our flight as the room is tiny and hard to use when you are able bodied.
I got off last too, and didn't need to use the special lift as my stairs training worked like a dream. It was so good to clamber into our car and be home within two minutes.
So all my worries were for naught, thanks to everyone who gave me advice on how to prepare and what to do - very helpful!!!
