THR 6 weeks Post-op THR - where should I be

Had setback this week. Saw Dr today for X-ray and all looked well. Having sever groin pain and pain on outside of thigh near incision. Dr said muscular and need to make sure not doing too much. He did put me out of work for 1 more week. I fee mobility wise I am back to 3 weeks.
If you ice and rest you'll be amazed how quickly you bounce back to where you were before the pain started. It's frustrating to have a setback but it's all part of the overall progress and you do get better, even if it is more slowly than you'd like!

Recovery is a real roller coaster. This is just a temporary set back. Rest, ice and elevate. What seems impossible one day is easy on another try.

I'm almost chuckling to myself, thinking about the words I sent to you last night - today I find them needing them for myself!!!! Ah, yes, setbacks! I woke up feeling the effects of not balancing the amount of activity my new hip can take, so it will be ice, rest and elevation for me today! It is extremely frustrating when you've been doing well and seeing marked improvement, but knowing this is an expected part of the roller coaster ride, we just strap ourselves in and know that the next few days will bring improvement! I've got to remind myself (so I'll remind you, as well!) - healing isn't linear!!!
Here's to a restful today, and a much better tomorrow!!!

Not quite back to where I was, but improving, @scmom! Resting, icing and elevating again today - there's no ordering this recovery process around, is there?! :umm:
But we'll get there eventually!!!
:bicycle1:

@scmom How are you doing these days?

We are the same age and I also have fibromyalgia, so I am curious how it is going for you. Did the pain at the beginning of the month resolve? Are you back at work? How is that going? Has the surgery affected your fibromyalgia? I was expecting it to cause a flare, but so far so good. I wonder what it will be like when I am up and around more.

It's my fifth week post-op and - despite some discomfort in operated area- i'm doing great. Of course still looking after myself, sleeping on my back, wearing anti-embolism socks and refrain from bending/twisting - but it can be managed. Need less and less assistance - although still some around the house. Just wondering - when i will be able to tie my shoelaces (just sheer curiosity laced with impatience), bend and pick up something under the bed - i do understand it's a matter of time and by all means i have to prevent dislocation. So better safe than sorry.

Glad you are doing so well, @aardvark3! Some of your questions depend on what activity restrictions have been required by your surgeon. I was told not to bend past 90 degrees for the first 6 weeks. After that time, I worked on slowly bending over further. I think I could finally do socks without the sock aid and tie shoelaces by about 8 weeks. Some people can do it sooner, and others take longer. I don't think I will ever bend down and try to pick up something under the bed. I keep my grabbers around for tasks like that, or ask my husband to do the more difficult bending and lifting. However, I still have a bad hip and am going to have surgery on my THR hip in a month, so I am not all the way healthy yet. My knees and ankles aren't in the best shape either. So it will depend on how strong your body and joints are.

Hi Krists, just spoke to my surgeon and he's no doubt a great specialist and very nice person but also rather paranoid about the dislocation. My only hope is that i don't get infected by his paranoia ;)
Well, almost 6 weeks after - using one crutch, have been told i can eventually sleep on my side (and i think my body says so too but still slightly uneasy about it; well, it will come with time though), X-ray looks OK and there's nothing to worry about. No pain, muscles gaining their strenght through some exercises i do regularly. Got rid of anti-embolism socks (had a very flaky skin underneath, used a generous amount of good skin cream and it's almost gone) also of some medication (blood thinning plus iron) which made my stomach upset and churning almost all the time. My surgeon also said i can travel but need my socks again for the flight and some blood thinning medication prior to and it can be arranged by my GP.
So things are being well.
I'm seeing my physio on Tuesday morning and i do have some questions to be answered. E.g. what about shoelaces or getting into the bathtub (in my daughter apartment is only the bath, i've got shower as well so easy for me) or how to pick up things without using "helpful Harry" :)
Also i can drive from Monday on because my insurance was suspended for 6 weeks after the operation.

All sounds like good news, @aardvark3! It's always a relief to hear that the x-ray shows that everything is normal, and that you are progressing well. Yes, the side-sleeping will come in time. I started that at 6 weeks, sleeping on the un-operated side, and did fine, as long as I used a pillow between my legs. As far as reaching down to your feet or the floor, I just worked on slowly stretching down a little bit further each day after 6 weeks, going only as far as I felt comfortable, and eventually I got there! I don't think I'll ever take a bath again, as I don't think I could get out again, with a good hip or not! So it's showers for me, which I prefer anyway. Since I fractured that vertebra in my back I've been using the shower chair again, and it helps me to feel secure in the tub, especially since we don't have any grab bars in there.

Enjoy your freedom with driving again! And with your new hip!
