I can tell you that with both my tkrs ROM only started to come as swelling decreased.
With my first tkr, the PT gave me the old MUA scare talk. If you're not at x degrees the OS will want to do an MUA, blah blah. And, wanting to be a compliant patient, I let him have me do too much too early. Needless pain.
The OS was fine with my progress both times and I was slow to get to 90 and beyond.
My PT with my second tkr focused on icing and gentle exercises. I went to PT 2x/week for about 1/2 hour and did just a little exercise on my own. (Less than they told me to as I trusted my instincts and what my knee was telling me I was up for.) If you had weakened muscles before the surgery, there's plenty of time to work on those gradually after your tissues are more recovered from the trauma of the surgery. That's what I did, anyway.
