@lunula

That was very well said! Those are exactly the questions I had for my hip replacement and my husband's impending knee

Hi there , @jeano wanten me to chime in so here goes, let me start from today and go backwards. Today my knee is absolutely pain free, i can hike , bike , jog up and down stairs , work 8 hours at a costco as a butcher than hit the gym for 2 hours doing cardio and weightlifting without a twinge of pain from my knee. Waking up in the morning , skipping downstairs without pain is a miracle. My knee has been reborn. Now if you want to put that off , be my guest. My only apprehension was my age. Would i be willing to do this over again in 20,30 years. ABSOLUTELY ! And heres why, my recovery was a piece of cake ! Thanks to all these people on this forum. I studied for 3 months daily on this forum pre op. Everyday . I couldnt put it down. Sure some threads scared the **** out of me, but honestly i couldnt take the arthritic knee any longer. Being a solid 260 lb at 6ft 3 in .its alot to lug around daily with osteoarthritis. In fact it took me about 5 years to find my 3rd surgeon who was willing to do the surgery. I practically hyperventilated when he agreed to do it. Tears of joy ! However i only needed one knee replaced. A bi lateral is very doable if you follow the mantras AKA the holy grail. I would also take advantage of your insurance now ! With all these wackos running our country , you can never know whats gonna happen. i will follow your thread , best of luck , Iceman

Hi again. Starting. To get very nervous now. About 2 weeks away form oft 29 surgery. Yikes

Hang in there, @avj123 - just busy your brain with other things and make sure to take care of yourself! :)

Kept your eyes on the prize; hold on! In about 2 and a half weeks you'll be wondering why you were skittish.

Dear avj123: lunula raised some good questions. They were the same I asked myself after years of "dealing with" knees. My husband and I used to ride observed trials motorcycles in national competition. In 1976 I tore my meniscus in the left knee. I was 26. Recovery was rugged but I made it through. In 2009 I tore meniscus in the right knee and my doctor went in to deal with that. I also had Synvisc in both knees which did not help. I am now 64 almost 65. Dealing with my knees has been a long road. I think we all share the same questions, concerns, and doubts, as lunula said. I think it is important to have a doctor who does many knee replacements a year and has a great team to work with. My doctor did my knee and four others on the day of my surgery. He does hundreds of these a year and knows my knees very well. For me, the issue was my current quality of life. In 2012 I walked a half marathon using 2 canes. I used 2 canes whenever I wanted to walk more than a mile. In June of this year I fell down my basement stairs and really did a number on the right knee. My quality of life tumbled and I determined it was time for a change. I am almost 4 weeks post op and so glad I did this. My quality of life is improving everyday. Only you can make the decision but we hope you will stay with us and share how things are going. This is a great place to learn and to share concerns.

Thanks all. It is really helpful to hear your experiences. My doctor also does about 300 of these a year. He is he head of NYU orthopedics. So I feel very good about that. Thanks. And recut the past few days have had a it if pain again so in a weird way I feel better because it reminds me of why I need Thai surgery.
