@newlife2lv
It was hard for me too, seeing all those items in my house, especially because of our ages.
I bought an ice machine also, really like it. You can put frozen ice bottles in it so you don't have to buy so much ice. But, I found with ice, it was colder. But, it's also more convenient with the bottles.
I'll have to remember that tip, 19 year old took week off job so i definitely will put her to work. Middle daughter 25 year old temporarily lives with me too. She's done some home healthcare and worked a nursing home in past so she knows she best step up for her moms!

That's great you have a daughter with some medical background. They will be a lot of help.

Unfortunately i hate going out and using cane, but as got worse i had brought a folding one to put my purse, definitely not a cute look. Need this knee see straight to be able to walk down the aisle this year since got engaged this Christmas. I love singing and had to give up many opportunities to sing bands locally just cause i knew this knee wouldn't hold up. My arthritic knee I occasionally get this cold wet feeling im assuming due to that but never recall any other person complain same sensation. Of course never remember to ask when at my doc ofc

Congratulations on your engagement! I'm sure you'll be ready for that day. I hate you're having to miss singing, I love to sing but not any good at it.
Going to bed also, have a good nights sleep.

I have brought forward this month's list so that you can easily see who your surgical buddies are.

I am heading to all of my pre-op meetings tomorrow morning at the hospital. I still don't know if I should just make my own ice packs or get an ice machine of some kind. Do you suppose they will fill me in on what they suggest? Did any of you get your machines off of Amazon?

@crstysue I wasn't sure about the ice machine either. I had bought one, but wasn't really sure I needed it, until pt came and was surprised I wasn't using one. He helped my husband set it up and I'm loving it. It does come with cons though. You can use frozen ice bottles with the water, or you can use ice and water, I found that even though I have to buy ice, it does keep it colder. And for a longer time period. But, it's whatever is best for you, it's an individual decision.
Good luck tomorrow!

@crystysue- I unpacked mine today to get some relief, since I haven't had my pain herbs for couple weeks, it is a lot easier than ice packs. Not sure how often I'll have to replenish the ice but it's been 6 hours and it's still full of ice.

01/24/17 LTKR, then RTKR

@crstysue I also purchased it - Ossur cold rush device, unit only and an Ossur cold rush therapy universal pad off Amazon. The unit was $136.99 and the pad was $37.99.

They didn't say a word today about ice therapy, and of course, I forgot to ask. I presume this will be out-of-pocket expense that insurance will NOT cover? And do you sleep while using the ice?

I think that my OS could have prescribed it and insurance might have paid for it, but I didn't think to ask about it, because I decided while I was in the hospital to order it.
Yes, I have slept with it on and it stays cold about 6 hrs. It feels great, you just have to make sure you put something under it so it's not directly on the skin.

And do you sleep while using the ice?
Yes, you can ice all night long, as long as you have some material (like a tea towel) between the icing equipment and your skin - so you don't get frost bite.

I used frozen gel packs, one at the front and one at the back of my knee. I bought 6, so that I always had some frozen in reserve. When I woke in the night, I would change the packs for fresh ones. I still have them in my freezer and my grandchildren use them for their bumps and bruises.

Well, I'm going to be set. Getting my ice machine tomorrow. Also have several gel packs as well. Nice to have options. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I am having my RTKR next Tuesday, January 31st. I am not tech savvy at all and want to start a new thread about this second experience. I have read Starting New Threads but still don't understand it. I cannot find the page that shows the steps. I'm sure I just don't know where the origination page starts. I thought if I went to my profile something would show up there, but I just don't see anything. If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it as I have a lot of concerns these 5 days before having this done again!

I am also having a knee replacement on Jan. 31. We are knee sisters. I will be in Topeka. Where are you? I know someone who knows more about this than I will help you get a thread started!

Hi Topeka! It will be great to have a TKR sister! I live in Boise. I did get a thread started! I called it "Here I Go Again" under pre-op. How is your first knee doing? Are you nervous about this one? Sometimes I wonder if my knees will ever feel normal again. This has been a challenging journey!

Hi CJM. I think my thread is called "Nervous, but ready, for Jan. 31 LTKR". This will be my first knee replacement. 8 weeks later, on March 31, I will have my right knee replaced. This week, being off of all pain meds in preparation for surgery Tuesday, I am feeling pretty uncomfortable in both knees. Of course I'm nervous, but ready to do this thing and get my life back. You and I are the same age. I have 3 grandkids that need a healthy active Grammy to keep up with them. I've been doing daily exercises for the past 40 days, but unfortunately didn't lose the weight I had hoped to before surgery. Anyway, Tuesday is a new beginning filled with promise...for both of us!

@crstysue and @CJM I'm wishing you well on your upcoming surgeries. It may get a bit tough after (for me, days 2-9) but the surgical pain lessens.

@crstysue I was concerned about my right knee since it was in such bad shape as well - but, I felt no pain or discomfort until recently since I've been up and on a cane much more. I'm pretty careful when getting up so I don't strain it too much. I think the pain meds and the lack of activity calms that other bad knee so you won't be feeling it. I was amazed how much the pain meds were covering that bone/bone pain that I had daily. Oh, and by the way - that bone/bone pain is now permanently gone in the left knee!!!
