I'm having total knee replacement on my right leg on Dec 28th this year. I joined this group to get support and information. I'm in the enhanced recovery program and Dr. says I will most likely go home the same day. I'm a bit nervous about that. Anxious to hear others stories. I'm gathering equipment and am wondering about chairs. They say a straight back chair with a stool for foot elevation. I don't own a straight back chair and am wondering about a straight back camp chair with a chair cushion to elevate. This is a standard size chair, not the short ones.

I have had to postpone my Dec 12th surgery. I found out a few days ago that both of my femurs have osteoporosis (T scores -2.5). My regular dr suggested I have a bone scan since I'm postmenopausal by a few yrs and also have had (treated) hypothyroidism for over a decade. What timing !

I am being referred to an osteoporosis specialist, and my regular dr is developing a battery of blood and urine tests to make sure my thyroid levels are optimal (I've been hypothyroid for over 10 yrs but have had it supplemented well by meds), and also check the parathyroid. The urine test has to do with determining how the bones are being compromised?

My surgeon's office said that osteoporosis was not grounds for stopping surgery....really? In my case it involved the femur bones and once the implants are attached to them, the femurs cannot have density scans done because of the metal. So I would never know if diet, supplements, meds, etc. were stopping it or reversing the disease!

Today I did officially choose to postpone the surgery. Once I see the bone specialist, get the tests done, and maybe take some meds, we'll re-do the scan (in 6 mos?) and hope for positive changes. Then I'll reschedule the BTKR.

@diatom. So sorry you won't be joining us on this journey at this time, but you are doing the right thing for you. Praying for your complete healing. [emoji1374]. Thank you for enlightening me on not being able to have bone scans (at least of the femur) after knee replacement. My mother has her of the spine so perhaps that is a way I can have it monitored. Please keep in touch. [emoji4]

@diatom, life often throws us a curve ball when we least expect it. I have removed you from the December surgery list and will look forward to your return to the forum and putting you back on a surgery list.

All the best!

Truly feel for you, @diatom, with your surgery delay. We share some health issues: I've been hypothyroid for years, after I had a parathyroid gland w/tumor removed. I never delay bone scans. My TSH dropped last spring but increase in thyroid rx brought it back to normal range in a couple of months. I'm sure it was very disappointing to put off surgery, but I commend you for respecting your body and its chemistry. I'll be holding you up in this next chapter of your healing journey ..... you are surrounded in loving light.

I don't see my name & date on the December Supernova list. Seems like it ought to be there--? At any rate, I'll be having a R TKR December 26.
