THR Weight after surgery

Wow...beautiful photo! You look great. I've really enjoyed reading this thread. When you say your bones are crumbling, what do you mean? Do you have osteoarthritis in other parts of your body?

Before my surgery, I was no longer able to dance or do yoga. I didn't like walking in public, because I was self conscious about my limp. My intuition told me to try the machines at the gym, and that was the magic answer! I used light weights, and followed with hydro therapy. I tried the bikes, but both felt terrible, so I decided to wait. I had a grinding sensation, and both of my hips were bone on bone. Now I can ride the regular bike. I'm just doing six mins. for now with no resistance. I'm amazed at the length of you sessions. I found that by using the machines before my surgery, I was able to build up a layer of muscle that alleviated the pain. Because of that I was able to sleep without any pain medication.

I'm interested to hear how things progress for you. Everyone is so different when it comes to hip replacements.

p.s. I only weighed 111 the morning of my surgery. The last time I had weighed myself I weighed 116. (That was about 10 years ago.) At my post op visit I weighed 117. Much better. I'm 5'7 3/4". I think the stress and worry made me lose weight pre op. I also wondered if the ceramic hips had added weight.

Hi @sandysue14 ,
I like the photo of you in Sukothai. We've also been there before - my husband and me, one of our daughters and her partner. We did a roundtip through Thailand starting at Bangkok and travelling to the beautiful north - Chiang Rai, Chian Mai etc. I also like the idea of you spending the winter months in a warm country. We bought a holiday house in Cairns, Eastern Australia which we let out with the help of a Short Term Accommodation Agency. The long-term idea is for us to spend the colder months in a tropical country, and then also using the house ourselves, but I still have to work. Maybe we can spend more months in Australia when I've retired - in the hope we will be able to keep the house until then.
You look phantastic and extremely young. While more rest is probably appropriate for people who are not used to doing so much exercise, it's important for those who are athletic like you to keep up the exercise pre-op and to get back to it as soon as they can. Did you also run? I've done 10 marathons and 3 half-marathons. I even practiced running up to November 2014, but then my hip hurt too much and I had to stop. My exercise routine includes cycling, swimming, a bit of training on the machines at the gym, some light yoga, and I've even run again - in the forest near my workplace in the lunch hour on soft ground, no heel-striking - up to 13 kilometers. By bones crumbling, do you mean osteoporosis? My surgeon says I've got osteoporosis and for this reason, exercise is a must for me to strengthen my bones. I also gained weight post-op but that was desirable because I had muscle atrophy. I hope my weight gain isn't all fat but also some muscle substance - but that's probably right because my thighs feel stronger now. Enjoy your travelling and I'd enjoy reading more reports from you here - take care - Constanze

Hi @sandysue14
I am browsing and catching up, saw your posts. Your photo looks good but when I looked at it quickly the light behind your shoulders looked like wings - must be saying something!! The whole process of recovery is amazing all so different recoveries all with different approaches - true no one size fits all. Best wishes.
