THR TomT in recovery

I’m sorry your back, leg muscles and area behind your knee is bothering you. Does heat work at all? I think the pain will eventually ease. You may consider OTC pain relievers on the bad days until you obtain more permanent relief. Don’t hesitate to call your surgeon‘s office for advice. I’m sure a PA, or a nurse will offer some guidance and reassurance also. Wishing you comfort and speedy relief.
@TomT

Hey guys its been a long time since I've logged in, things have been going great for me and my new hip. I've doing a ton of walking, and doing cardio on the elliptical every week. I'm actually in great shape again since my hip arthritis is not holding me back anymore. My right leg has gained a ton of muscle tissue from all the working out I can do now. Well unfortunately two days ago I was working out in the gym I picked up some dumbbells that were 70lbs each and I walked about 6 feet over to where the bench was and I felt a slight pain in my hip. Since then I haven't been feeling pain but a weird sensation from my hip joint. Do you guys think its possible that I have some how injured the hip joint? Its not really painful just feels kind of weird, and today it feels a bit better than it did yesterday. Could it be I just some how hurt the soft tissue around the joint?

I guess my question is if I really did do too much and damaged the hip joint would I be feeling a lot more than just an odd feeling, would I be in a ton of pain? Since the joint is artificial it has me wondering if I would even be able to feel if its damaged or not since it doesn't have nerve connections to my body

Also is there a problem with lifting that much weight and walking? I'm 5 9 " and weight 170 if I were holding two 70 pound weights I guess that was about 310 pounds of weight on the hip joint, is that too much? I guess the doctor never warned me about that

Hi Tom,
It‘s nice to hear from you again. It sounds like you’re doing really well, back enjoying the things you love.

my question is if I really did do too much and damaged the hip joint would I be feeling a lot more than just an odd feeling, would I be in a ton of pain?

Yes, I believe you would be struggling with some serious pain if you caused any damage.
I‘d ice all areas of discomfort and since you’re feeling improvement today, hopefully tomorrow you‘re even better.

I’m going to tag my colleague @SaraK to offer an opinion since she has experience with weight lifting and I trust her advice. You may also consider checking in with your surgeon to get his opinion in regard to your questions.

Have a great weekend!

Hey Layla it's nice to hear from you again too. I hope you have been well. Yes things are going so good I just completely forgot I even had a hip replacement when I was in the gym moving around heavy weight like that. I went for a long walk this morning around the lake and then up 4 flights of stairs with no pains just some weird feeling that I feel from the joint. I'm gonna ice it like you said, it's been so long since I've even had to touch my ice packs.

Thank you kindly, I have been well.

Aww, I’m sorry you had to drag out the old ice packs, but if there is any inflammation icing should help ease that. At least you’ve already noticed some improvement, that’s a great sign.

Take good care!
@TomT

Lol yes they were buried way back in freezer behind some frozen pizzas. The ice did help actually I don't feel anything now. I guess I just did something to the soft tissue around the joint. Thinking about it now it was silly to lift that heavy of weights I won't be doing that again. I'm hoping this hip will last and will not have to be replaced again I better take care of it.

@TomT good to hear from you. In my experience new hips just don't like heavy lifting. Muscles you have not used in awhile need time to settle. Yes, I know you had your THR over one year ago. But the sudden demand to carry weight results in the area complaining. It's fine to weight lift - just build up very gradually.

Glad you are enjoying that new hip!

Tom,

I don’t think these artificial hips like heavy weights much. I am 9 months out and had a huge setback. Can’t tell if it’s from pulling my jet ski trailer in the yard or riding my dirt bike. I am starting to think it was pulling the trailer with the jet ski on it in the grass. I have a dolly but it still weighs at least 500lbs.

Not thrilled about it. I doubt I damaged any components but now I have pain all over and upon weight bearing in the am, beyond frustrated.

good luck

Larry

Hey Jaycee it is nice to hear from you and Layla again, I still think back to all the support I received from this forum before and after my surgery. Especially the support I got before the surgery I was a nervous wreck and reading all the success stories and talking with you guys help me deal with that. The advice I got for recovering was really helpful. I will continue to work out but I just got to remind myself that all though I feel my hip is not injured anymore I need to be mindful not to overdue it.

Hey Larry I agree, up till this point I haven't moved something that heavy I've been slowly rebuilding my strength in the gym and my hip didn't have any problem with me moving the 50, 55, 65, pound dumbbells but for some reason those two 70 pound ones bothered it. I hope you're feeling better now, I took Layla's advice and went back to icing, I did it all last night and I'm much better today.

Anyone reading this, keep in mind that a year after your surgery you're going to be feeling great and might forget to take it easy, if you do you could experience a set back like this

@TomT I for one am glad that you posted this question, this might be a good cautionary story for others, including me!

Sure sounds like soft tissue, but it would be interesting to have you check with your surgeon and see what they say.
It does seem like a lot of weight to be putting on an artificial joint, but maybe it was the motion of walking or maybe you were bending a bit forward to place the weights on the bench? Especially since you've been adding heavier weights for a while now and most likely are conditioned to it.
I think that motion could be irritating to your core muscles.. such as your supporting back muscles that insert in and around your hip or maybe the Psoas Muscle that inserts there in the front of your hip.
That seems to be a common issue (with lifting and carrying heavy weights) and when there's a slight change in our posture or positioning, it strains the supporting soft tissues in our core.

It will be interesting to hear if another day or so of icing takes care of it for you.

But would love to hear what your Doctor thinks about it.

@TomT - I have a couple of surgeons from my hips and shoulder. Both were ok with me doing powerlifting after my THR. I was a newbie to the sport so was automatically building up slowly anyway, but both said no weight limits. I currently squat 170 (past parallel) and deadlift 180 and don't even think about the hips as I do it. My surgeon is aware of the weights because we talked specifics after my rotator cuff surgery.

I hope you're doing better by now but suspect that you tweaked some soft tissue. I was told that the implant was stronger and could withstand more stresses than the native hip but needed to build up the capabilities of the soft stuff.

Good luck!

Hey guys I'm back again, well actually I come around every once in a while and comment in threads but I'm back again with an issue. Last night me and my wife were watching tv and she rested both of her legs on my legs and she often does this and its never caused a problem before, but last night I felt a twitch of pain, and now this morning if I'm sitting at a 90 degree angle and lean forward I'm feeling pain in my hip joint. I'm probably overreacting but do you think I could have injured myself somehow? Does anyone else on occasion have this pain when sitting at 90 degrees, I had this during my initial recovery but haven't felt it since for a very long time.

Also, I've been very inactive the last 2 months, and haven't been in the gym as much and I thought maybe I let my muscle tone get too relaxed around the hip

Thanks Sarak sorry for the really late reply for some reason I didn't see your post, at that time I was really working out hard, I had an unfortunate accident where I broke one of the toes in my right foot which keep me out of the gym for a while then winter came and I caught covid, so I've been away from the gym for several months kind of has me thinking the pain I'm feeling today maybe related to letting my leg muscles become too relaxed if that is a thing

Hello, Tom. Nice to hear from you! I have experienced this occasionally especially if I haven’t been as active or do something my body hasn’t done it a while. I usually just go back to our go to of icing, elevate, and backing off a bit. Sometimes I’ll throw in some acetaminophen or ibuprofen if I’ve really done a number on myself. I’ve now gotten away from immediately thinking I’ve done something bad to my hip when it hurts. That would only show up if I fell or something.

Most likely you’ll find you just tweaked some soft tissue and it will improve shortly. I’d only be concerned if it didn’t improve or got worse over a period of time. I hope you feel better soon. Keep us posted.

Hey Hip4life its nice to hear from you too, yes I was overreacting, I went on a couple of long walks and now feel completely fine. I think its exactly what you said that I must have some how tweaked some soft tissue.

@TomT Glad that discomfort has eased. It's not unusual to get complaints from muscles, tendons and soft tissues this far out from THR. I get sore if I lift wrong or maybe twist a new way. But you are right, you can usually walk all this off. :walking:

Hey guys its been a long time. I hope everyone is doing well. I just wanted to check in its been several years since my hip replacement and things are going very well, in fact so well I might have over done it again lol. I just wanted to get your opinion on how non-impact is bike riding? Lately I've been doing a lot of cardio on my Bowflex max trainer, for those unfamiliar is kind of like an elliptical but it's more like riding a bicycle while standing than your traditional elliptical. Well lately, the leg that I had surgery on has become so strong that I'm able to go very hard and strong on the machine but last night I felt a kind of soreness I haven't felt when using a non-impact device like this. Even though a bicycle is non-impact will it still wear our your THR? I'm trying to strike a balance of not taking it too far on my joint but also getting in the proper amount cardiovascular work to stave off heart disease in my old age.
