@Cratchit you'll have to find a Toothsmart website! Sounds like you've really suffered. What bad luck. Hope you feel much better soon.

Your tooth/gum pain description has caused my mouth to hurt. :) There is one thing in my life I absolutely hate and I've been quite a lot - going to the dentist or any profession tied to teeth/roots, etc.

You said that 'I learned my lesson and I had my last TKR as soon as my knee was ready.' What does that mean in terms of planning for surgery on the other knee? I ask because my non-operated knee is sans cartilage, creaks like an old gate and is prone to giving way. It is damaged simply due to carting and compensating for the damaged (L) knee for all these years. When did you know your other knee was ready? It`s encouraging to hear how active you are and how fit your knees are.
I had my second knee replaced as soon as the pain it was causing started to limit my activities and my surgeon said that the X-Ray showed it was bone-on-bone. I didn't wait for my life to be ruled by my painful knee.

It sounds as if you've had an awful time with your teeth. I don't think antibiotics are needed for routine dental work but in your case, with a wound draining pus, it might be wise to ask for them.

Thanks Celle! I didn`t feel I had huge amounts of pain with my (L) knee though my activities were increasingly limited and my xrays were garbage. I don`t want to get to that stage again before I have the (R) knee replaced.

This tooth thing has been awful and it`s not over yet. I respect the need to reduce prescriptions for antibiotics and am happy that this thing is draining but oh, I do feel ill. I`m clock watching again for when I can take pain meds and I haven`t done that since my knee op. I`ll see how I go on but I may ring the emergency dentist tomorrow. 10 months and this thing is still troublesome, Shoot me now!

Because you feel so ill, it does sound as if you have a generalised infection. I think it would be wise to phone your surgeon and ask advice about an antibiotic.

Thanks Celle. I'll have to ring in the morning now. On the bright side, at least l still have some strong pain killers left from my TKR and they're helping enormously.

Very sorry to hear you're feeling so bad @Cratchit. Hope you gain some relief very soon.

Well, l actually feel a bit better this morning, praise be! There seems to have been an endless dribbling and now, although there is still some swelling, it is much less so than previously. Both maxfac and the dentist said the lump l was left with in my cheek was scarring which would remain there and both refused to open the other tooth or incise the swelling on the upper gum despite my ongoing belief that it was the upper 5th which was the source of the problem. I guess we've all learned lessons in this - mine is to be more assertive and not be brow beaten by professionals, one of whom referred to my tooth as 'grumpy'! At least my knee has benefitted from all this extra analgesia. Every cloud and all that!

Ooh you are stoical! Its hard to believe you're not assertive though. Maybe that's one good thing that'll come out of your tooth/knee combo - you wont stand for being fobbed off by anyone any more!

Absolutely Spex! I think there are a lot of egos presenting as professionals who aren`t prepared to listen to what the patient is saying and dismiss concerns like the maxfac doc did in saying I just had a 'grumpy tooth'. I had a grumpy everything else as well as a result of the tooth! It`s like mothers who say there is something wrong with their child but get fobbed off by those who think they know best yet the mother`s instinct is so often right. That`s what I teach our mums - go with your gut. If in doubt, check it out because even if it`s wrong the peace of mind gained is priceless.

I wish I was as good an advocate for myself as I can be for others but alas, I`m quite quiet by nature so those with louder personalities tend to walk all over me and any assertiveness I may feel gets trampled in the process. I should have insisted that this tooth was opened months ago but I didn`t. Lesson learned - I hope!

Thanks Mireille! It`s actually better again today and seems to have stopped oozing now. If I`d known I would get this much relief from slashing my gum open I`d have done it myself months ago - I was certainly tempted to!

You have a stomach of steel, @Cratchit !!!! I think I would have passed out by now. Although I would have made sure to get to the dentist's office first, so they could see me do it! Nothing like a little 'emergency' in your office to scare away other patients! :good-bad:

Well my next trip to the dentist is tomorrow and as the thing seems to be reforming on my gum, I`ll see what I can do!

Oh, and I return to work next Monday, 27th.

You must have done something bad in a past life! This is so unfair.

Me no likey. You just tell Mr Den-teest that if he doesn't git this here tooth issue fixed, we bonesmarties'r gonna have ta have 'words' with him!

(trust me - Noone wants to have 'words' with a redneck!)

Many hugs to you :roseshwr:

Well, that's what I get for thinking I read 'him' somewhere earlier in this thread!

Consider me schooled!
