PKR tarajenni's PKR Recovery

I’m trying to get off of them. Went 8 hours before my last dose today. They have me on 5 oxy and 325 Tylenol. Every time I fell asleep last night, my leg would jerk and I’d wake up yelping. Hope that subsides very soon. Appreciate the input from everyone.

Are you ambulating every 2-3 hours? That should help. And then immediately elevating and applying ice wrap? Also frequently refresh the ice in the cuff; I empty/refill it via gravity often. I'd reconsider keeping to the recommended frequency of pain meds; ie perhaps every four, not waiting until 8 hours have passed. I understand if the pain gets ahead of you it's very difficult catching up and regaining control of it. I've been trying to do my gentle hospital exercise plan in the last hour before pain med is due. That way I hope I will get feedback from my body when enough is enough and not push it too far.

I am ambulatory at least every hour. I have the Breg polar cube and keep the ice on when I’m on couch along with elevation. The Percocet script is written every 4 hours but I really hate the loopiness which is why I waited 8 today. I know it’s early and I should probably still take them every 4 hours. But I also wondered if the leg jerks were from the meds.
Thanks!

@tarajenni, I experienced the same leg jerks and found they were always associated with a spontaneous tightening of my quads. I chalked this off too nerves and muscles “waking up” from the trauma of surgery and anesthesia. It eventually went away.

Almost at 2 weeks now. This recovery has been better than the last. I have had very little swelling which has made the pain less and my ability to ambulate and do my exercises more regularly. The pain meds this time we’re also different, hydrocodone the first round and Percocet this round. I had much less side effects with the Percocet and I’ve been sleeping so much better this time. The sleep has helped tremendously! I’ve been to PT twice and I’m walking about a mile (broken up) per day. Now I’m just anxious to get these staples out but that’s not until next Monday.

I know there may likely be bumps in my recovery down the road but thankful for how easy it’s been so far.

It sounds like your recovery is going quite well!

@tarajenni I’m 13 weeks post op LPKR! We had our pkr’s the same day, Aug 8th. I can’t imagine going thru that again so soon! I took 10 weeks off work and was really glad I could! Really had time to regenerate after 14 yrs on this job! My extension and rom are almost perfect and no limping! Back to riding horse and normal activities 10/7!
I hope your 2nd pkr recovery goes quick! Imagine how great you will be with them done! Prayers for a smooth recovery! Take care!

That is amazing! So glad you had a great recovery. I went back at 4.5 weeks which was tough with the little sleep I was getting. But my coworkers were really good about stepping in if I needed to sit down for a bit. I also iced during lunch every day. This recovery seems to be going much better which I owe a lot to my PT. Once I found out the second surgery was a go, we started really working on that knee too to strengthen it up. Looking at maybe going back at 4.5 weeks again but we will see. Finally getting my staples out today!

@tarajenni, I can't believe how well you are doing! Also, that you are trying to get off pain meds so soon. It will be 6 weeks for me this Weds. for a LTK Revision and I find when 6 hrs are up my knee is screaming for pain meds. I have been taking Norco 3.75 mg plus 1 or 2 ES TYLENOL every 6 hrs. I take Norco 7.5 mg at night with 1 or 2 ES Tylenol. Besides pain relief, it helps me sleep better.
I wish I didn't need the pain meds but it helps so much!!!

@Cementless
I go stir crazy in the house all day so my motivation to get off the meds was to be able to drive. I still take a Percocet every night as that’s when the pain is worst. There have been a few days I’ve taken some during the day but not very often. I’ve also turned into the weatherman. We had a ton of rain today and my knee has been stiff all day!! Anybody out there know if that’s a permanent talent I will have?

When the barometric pressure drops suddenly, I still have discomfort in my tkr's soft tissues. It's not nearly as bad as it was earlier in my recovery, but I found that I do still have a storm predicting knee.

Please tell me this increased pain with bad weather eventually goes away.

@tarajenni, lol! I wish I could! It would be nice if just telling ourselves it will go away would make it true! I can say that I’ve noticed my knee (at 8 months) doesn’t seem to be quite as sensitive to weather changes as it was before my PKR. The aches are also a bit different, not the deep bone ache but more muscle type ache.

Maybe over time it does get better or at least different and more tolerable.

Happy New Year!

It raining pretty hard here, but my knee isn't saying a thing about it! The thing that affects it the most is when there's a very quick, drastic change in the barometric pressure. I can feel that. But, it's no way as bad as it was before or shortly after the surgery.

Please tell me this increased pain with bad weather eventually goes away.
It did for me. After about the first 6 months my new knee stopped being a barometer. It never was before surgery--I don't know if that makes a difference.
