THR Surgery done and recovering - yay!!!

I walked mostly around the house for the first week. I had a little route that I would take every two hours while awake. I increased it a bit with each walk but not much. It was week 2 before I ventured to the driveway, then the mailbox, then one house further, etc., until I could get around the block, about 1/2 mile by end of week 2. Just my timetable. Everyone is different but I didn't experience any setbacks with this method. Slow and steady.

how much walking did you do the first few days?
Very little. Just do what is required to move about for now. Getting up to use the bathroom, get yourself a drink or snack or get another ice pack. Then start venturing further and outdoors if you are feeling up to it. There is no timetable for this recovery. Listen to your body - it will tell you when it's ready to do more.

Hi everyone...I think I am doing this right, (right?) and continuing my recovery thread here. So, it is day 4...2nd full day at home. Felt the need to nest a bit (through the use of my children, lol) and had everyone organize the house to the point where things are very neat. We are expecting company any time each day now, as I have friends and family who want to stop by. Today was a nice dinner delivered by my Mom. Beef brisket with the fixings...great source of much needed protein.

As far as other things go, I took off my bandage as prescribed and took a shower. That really helped me feel as though I had rejoined the human race:-).

Trying to keep the ice to a minimum (also as prescribed by my dr) and walked around on the walker a nice amount today. Also cut the pain relief back a bit, but had to go back to the original dose now as I wind down the day. The pain is just higher than I expected now.

Thank goodness for my daughters who are keeping me company as I recouperate this summer. (Age 6 and 15)

I hope to be able to get out a bit further by the weekend and get some fresh air.

Well, that's about all for now.

Thanks!

@Juneanng Hi, Bilateral Jim here. I've been in athletics, studied athletic injuries, have had several surgeries and to not have ice used for soft tissue relief goes against everything i've learned or studied. Then, to give you ice therapy at the hospital but not at home ..--... I have been am athletic trainer for 39 years and i can't think of any time it was not. Now, on the other hand i don't know what your particular situation is. I hope he has a reason for that and i would like to know why1 Just in case i have a situation that might be similar. Other than that it seems you are doing well. Relax and heal!

Thank you @Cynthia777 and @Michegon

I really don't have much swelling at the surgical site and the surrounding tissue. It seems to be healing quite well. Can see my scar quite well. Will try to take and post a pic tomorrow.

Thanks!

Ps - the kids are now making us chocolate chip cookies...yay!

congrats to you @Juneanng ! I envy all of you that have gotten through the waiting and the surgery. September seems so far away. You sound like you are doing well. :)

You are posting just fine. Keep all your posts about recovery here so that we can see your history and advise you if needed.
Also cut the pain relief back a bit, but had to go back to the original dose now as I wind down the day.
At only 4 days out please continue to take your meds as prescribed - especially if you are not icing. When you start forgetting to take doses, that's the sign you can start reducing.

Hi everyone...things are going well, but definitely taking it slow. Today is Saturday and I knew I had 2 small things I hoped to accomplish over the weekend. Today was evening Catholic Mass (tomorrow is my 6 year old daughter's swim banquet) .

So...today, took it easy, took a shower in the afternoon and hubby drove me to Mass and made sure to drop me at front door to assist with my entrance. Traveling in a car was not too bad, since we just needed to go 10 minutes. Mostly sat for the Mass, but did try to stand a few times as needed. Used the walker and even walked up for communion. Good to see my priest and the parish community ! Then, got a bit over zealous and went out to a lite dinner to a restaurant up the street from Church. More for my mom than me (as you may recall, we lost Dad suddenly on 6/26 - she and dad spent every Sat night out at a restaurant, so I wanted to make sure that she had so etching to do this eve...Mass and a bite with my husband, kids and I. It was a nice diversion for all of us.

But, I have just arrived home and am just EXHAUSTED! I also found that I was out of breath at church. I think just the little bit of walking is taking its toll on me.

Now I am back in my electric recliner with heated socks on my feet, blanket on and ready to take another dose of pain meds ;-) . Kids are watching Penguins of Madagasgar on Netflix while I doze!

All in all a pretty good day, but that groin/thigh pain that stabs me while walking was pretty bad by the end of the night.

One day at a time, right!

You are a very brave soul to venture out at all, forget all the things you did! I didn't even sit in my car except the precarious ride home from the hospital for about ten days. Please scale back this activity a bit as it's much harder for your body to settle down after so much activity than to keep a slow steady pace. Keep up with ice and pain meds! In my opinion, it's too early to be doing so much!

Ooh I too had those groin pain stabbing at the beginning. Luckily all gone now.

Enjoy your rest

Thank you @beachgal. I think you are right. Tomorrow back to a few walks around the house with the venture out for my daughter's swim team awards and not planning to stay long. These things are helping mentally to break up the monotony as well and my dr wants me to be walking, walking, walking. Oh and BTW. All with NO ICE. That is their philosophy. They also want me to be off of the pain meds (other than Tylenol) by the 2 week appt. I can't imagine that now. Just have to work a bit each day (but not overdo it!)

Thanks!!

If you're not ready to be without your pain meds, you should have a serious talk with your doctor. Week 2 is extraordinarily early to be weening off the meds, especially when it's your OS suggesting it. Your body will heal better and your mental state will be much more optimistic if you're not hurting. Be frank and firm about this if you're not ready.

Remember, too, that it's not just what you can do so early in your recovery. You really want to stay away from situations that could cause you harm. Being in the public in general freaked me out a bit as I didn't want someone to run into me it cause me to fall. I also didn't want to pick up any germs, whether a simple cold or something more serious, with my incision not healed. It was into week 3 before I went shopping for 30 minutes or had a leisurely lunch out. I timed it when I knew the stores/restaurants would be less crowded. Sounds silly but it worked. Then I'd come home and nap for two hours!! Haha

Anyway, just be smart. Err on the side of caution to give your body every advantage to be well! Patience!!

jeez, what a dork of an OS!
No ice?

For about my first 1.5 weeks at home, I rigged my shoulder ice machine to fit a single hip.
Each night, I put enough blue ice in it so that it would be body temp by about 15-20 minutes and fell asleep with it on. I'd inevitably wake up a few hrs later to pee or due to a pain somewhere - I'd reload new blue ice and move the sleeve to my other hip and just go to sleep again.
both legs up on 2-3 pillows to get the height and angle right for max comfort and proper swelling control.

Ice = IRREPLACEABLE technique, even when on drugs.

your doc is a bit of a quack, hate to say it.
:)

and do the walking with which you feel comfy.
I was walking everywhere and up and down stairs on day 2....no assistance, no devices.
I know a guy who with only one hip done was using a cane for 4 months!
and everything in between...do what works SAFELY for you.

Oh and BTW. All with NO ICE. That is their philosophy. They also want me to be off of the pain meds (other than Tylenol) by the 2 week appt.
Frankly this in cruel! No one can be off pain meds 2 weeks out of THR! Can you have a conversation with your GP? This is just not going to work and will only prolong your recovery.

@jaycee I agree. I think this is all negotiable and I am glad that I have this forum to rely on for some additional information. I am currently on oxycodone, but also have tramadol to transfer over to. I think I will call their office on Monday to see how best to transition and if that will provide a better overall pain relief at this point. The oxy just makes me loopy and tired, preventing me from exercising the way I would like to.

Thanks!

Hi, at 6 weeks post op tomorrow (monday) I still take dihydrocodeine 30mg and paracetamol ( similar to cocodamol) and use tramadol as a back up, for when I have over done it. Also ice etc.

If you are getting those thigh muscles pains, as I did, you may well still have them in another 2 weeks or longer ...I spoke with my OS about my meds and he was happy with it and left it to me to decide when I was ready to reduce. I am fairly active now, which does cause the muscle pain to return for a while too
