THR Starting August with a new Hip and New thread....

No macho, just enjoy setting in the woods. I can assure you my wife won’t let me in my stand unless I am ready and health.

Thanks,
Russ

Hey Everyone out there in Hippy Hippster land!

Post Op Week #1 under my belt and so far so good. Surgery Pain is under control, and I am feeling good. I have absolutely no Hip Pain sensation as I did, pre-op. Woo-Hooooo! I have been out for a drive twice with my wife. On Monday, I had my 1st PT session. It went well, the therapist said my swelling was good, and I had very little bruising, and that surprised her. She also changed my Opti-Foam dressing. I have my second PT tomorrow. The plan is 2 PT sessions a week for the 1st 4 weeks.

My biggest and most frustrating issue is sleeping at night. I simply cannot get comfortable in bed. I have a fully adjustable sleep number bed, but I just can't find a good spot. I am a fetal position sleeper and that compounds the problem due to the back sleeping restrictions. So the last couple of nights I resorted to sleeping in the living room in our recliner theater chair. My un-comfort comes from the feeling of an extreme cramp/charlie horse in my surgery leg thigh. It feel like my muscle just won't relax.

As for pain and pain control, I have decreased the Vicodin to as needed, and I am taking 3-advil, 2 times a day to manage my pain. The past 2 nights I used the Vicodin and Advil PM to control the muscle pain so I could sleep.

So, week #1 down, quite a few to go. It is hard to believe I have been on the other side for a week already. Time Flies when you're having fun! I am optimistic, and excited to sometime, in the not to distant future, to be able to Really test out the new wheel!

@russ - I'm 3 weeks in and still sleep in recliner or on couch. I too have a sleep number bed... my issue is anxiety about rolling over during night. I find the couch most comfy as my op leg is against the back so it gets support.

Sounds like you are doing well on pain front. BSmart does not recommend Advil or NSAIDS as they reportedly inhibit bone growth. 1000mg Tylenol (so 2 extra strength) 4 times a day is what Josephine suggests. It's worked for me 90% of the time.

Good luck with PT, I've had success in simply stating I'm not comfortable doing bridges (or whatever). I have 2 therapists and I swear one is 'good PT' and one is 'bad PT'!

Stay steady and slow

Hey @deerhtr
How are you?
Hope you are seeing some progress!
Wishing you a good weekend!

Hi MoJo and Fellow Hipsters!

I'm sorry, should have added some updates sooner. Been lazy.....

So, anyway, It is now ~2.5 weeks for me and overall I feel really good except for the stamina/energy malaise that most folks find themselves experiencing. Had my 1st post op DR visit on Thursday the 16th, and got my staples removed. Woo Hoo! Sue(My DW), counted 57. I was just glad to get them out, since they were starting to pinch and irritate me a bit.

The Dr is not ready to release me for work yet. I return for eval on the 28th of August. He did say, I could star driving after week 3.

They snapped an X-Ray of the hip, and it looks great, I think! Added pic below. Kinda a badge of honor!

I'm on one crutch since my Dr visit, and I find getting around pretty easy. PT is going good. I have about 10 relatively easy exercises to do each day. All focusing on the surrounding muscles. I understand and agree about doing light PT. I also feel though some of these surrounding big muscles need to get some work. Gotta be able to climb that tree stand in October!

I guess the biggest gripe is, I have this deep thigh pain from the tourniquet they applied during surgery. We questioned the PA, and she said, "Oh yeah, recently we have had a number of patients complaining about thigh muscle pain. We may have to re-calibrate the tourniquet machine again." WOW! Do ya think! My gosh, how hard do they crank that thing down? If I didn't have this deep thigh muscle pain, I would be virtually pain free. The only pain meds I am taking now is Tylenol. They work so-so for the muscle pain. I can't justify taking Vicodin for my muscle pain.

So overall, I feel like I am progressing pretty good. Just need time and rest as highlighted many times here on the forum. I do think, the R&R prescription should be taken seriously. The major assault we have on our bodies takes time to heal, and that healing time should not be under estimated.

Thanks,

Russ

Awesome! Nice looking X-ray.

Right?
That thigh pain has alot to do with stretching those quads away so they could get in there. Mine were SO sore for months.
Thanks for the update.
Hang in there...hunting season coming.
