TKR Recovery, Here I Come!

I crossed my RTKR over my left at about 2-3 weeks post op. Both legs were elevated and I couldn't get comfortable, so over went my RTKR. It felt good! My visitors (both with TKRs) had looks of horror!

Very tired today. I fot up early to get the house as ready as I could get it for the housekeeper. That was exhausting, although I did not do too much. Then fed dog and cat, cleaned litter box and went to bed. I have hired a Visiting Angel to come in two times a week for a couple of hours just to help me keep up on laundry and other chores. She came today for the first time and that was exhausting. All she wanted to do was talk. A couple of times, I said, "When you finish......., I'll give you another job." She just kept sitting there talking. I was tired and wanted to sleep. Also, I am not paying $30 an hour for companionship. I finally got her up and working, but it was a chore. I feel bad, she was an older woman and when she went down into the basement and came up, she was panting hard. I suspect she is just trying hard to hold onto a job that is too much for her. Unfortunately, I need someone who can help me out. The head lady stopped by with the contract and asked how it went. I told her it was awkward because I am not used to hiring people. She agreed. I also told her the woman seemed really frail. I couldn't bring myself to say she couldn't do the job.

Pheebs52 - thanks for saying it seems like I am doing well on this new planet. Those words brightened me up

All of you - yes, I forget sometimes too, usually in the middle of the night when I head for the restroom. I'll jump up and start walking, only to realize I need the crutches. I think I considered the crossed knee thing once, but stopped before it got past the considering stage.

As I type and edit, I find the weirdest spellings and word constructions. I honestly don't know if it is me or the i-pad that is making the mistakes. Some of the words are just so far from what I think I typed that it seems weird that I would even type them. It could be the oxy........

We are lined up to get a Rotweiller puppy in the middle of July. I am excited but nervous. The doc said at 6 weeks, I can't hurt the knee, but I just hope I can keep up with the pup. Puppies are a lot of work! I know the husband will help out in the morning and evening, but it will be just me all day. We are the type of people that believe that dogs belong wherever the family is, so I don't want to just put him in the outdoor kennel. He will need to adjust to that before work starts again, but I want his cute fluffiness with us whenever possible. Hang onto your hats, because it is sure to be interesting! Those of you at 6 weeks, could you handle a puppy by then?
We have a lot of neighborhood support. The next door neighbors just got an adorable Labradoodle pup. We can go sit outside with them and their grandkids and let the dogs and kids play. That gives the pup good socialization with kids as well. Our other neighbor shares dogs with us. He gets my old dog every day during the school year. He will help with the pup as well. All that said, though, and the pup is our responsibility. I hope I am up for it. My plan is to get stronger as the pup gets stronger and, by 6 months, we both can walk for a ways. If it is too much, we have a good dog daycare between here and my husband's work and that could keep him going until I am strong enough.

Wow! I was so exhausted that I considered not typing, and this is my longest post yet. Hope it makes sense

Getting a puppy when you are only about 6 weeks into recovery sounds a bit ambitious. I wonder if the breeder would keep it for another month? House-training and playing with a young puppy is demanding, and a rottweiler will be big and bouncy.
Do make sure the pup has started his/her immunizations before playing with the other dogs.

@katdog, wow, you did a lot today, so no wonder you're exhausted! I know how it is to feel almost too tired to type! As for the word salad, I blame the Oxy. It's a convenient scapegoat right now.:yes!:

Yikes a puppy in 6 weeks? I am a lifelong dog owner with two older dogs at present. I am fortunate in that both seem to understand there's something wrong with me (perhaps the walker and crutches are a giveaway?) and so far, they have *respected* the leg. They avoid it, which is very unusual, since they normally like snuggling there for a nap. All that to say, I couldn't possibly handle a pup in just 3 more weeks; no way. I will grant we are all different, but if nothing else, you will still be very tired. The Energy Drain will continue for quite some time; pffft. From my perspective, housebreaking and training a pup is a full time job that requires enormous energy. I just couldn't do it with my present conditions. If you can, my hat's off to you!

Actually my husband and I were commenting the other day that we were glad we only had the cats to deal with through this. We have had dogs in the past. They are a lot of work, especially puppies. I know I don't have the energy for that anymore. But boy are they cute!!

That's too bad about your Visiting Angel lady. I'm not good a hiring or firing people either. We have a cleaning lady come in every couple weeks and my husband complains about some of the things she does or doesn't do like he likes. I just ignore it because I don't want to hurt her feelings. I'm just happy I'm not cleaning the toilets :heehee:

I was wondering if perhaps the agency could find a more energetic Angel for you? As you stated, you need help, not chat, and it's difficult to address that diplomatically in a one-on-one situation. In fact, you shouldn't have to at all. Call them tomorrow and see if they can send someone else.

I will call the agency in the morning. Paying someone to chat is not my cup of tea. Sometimes we need others to remind us of what we already know.

I too wanted to tidy up before a cleaning lady came mainly so she could get to places and not have to maneuver around piles or whatever.
I asked DH to play robot/servant to me for 10 minutes and just do what I asked without questioning what I was asking. So he walked around putting things away.
At several points he said: "I didn't know this belonged here" sheesh! we've lived here 33 years now.
If anything good comes from this it'll be more appreciation of all the little things...and a realisation that we need to get rid of a lot more things than I previously thought.

VW54 - We need to get rid of a lot of things too. This old farmhouse is blessed with lots of storage and, boy, have we filled it up! We keep talking about the garage sale that never comes and continue putting things into the basement. One day we will get rid of it all, I just don't know when. This left knee needs to keep strong so next summer is not another healing journey.

It seems like the more space I have, the more I fill it up with stuff. And I don't need half of it. Once a year or so, I do go through my closet and donate the clothes I haven't worn in a few years. That helps.

The months before this surgery I spent most of my days off purging our house. I too had way too much in our basement waiting for that dreaded garage sale that both me and my husband hate doing.

I finally went down there and just boxed up and donated everything. It was amazing how much I donated and got rid of. Very freeing feeling!

Now I can go down there without having a panic attack!

We're downsizing now, planning to move to a smaller house. Apart from all the "stuff" we've collected over 38 years in the house, we will have to get rid of about 2/3 of our furniture. It is a daunting prospect!

I have already donated 6 car loads to the local hospice shop.

It's good to know so many of us are in the same place as far as clutter. I love to shop. I especially love to shop for beautiful things. For quite a while now, I haven't bought anything new because I know it will mean I have to put something into the basement to make room for the new item. It gets ridiculous to even spend the money. Celle -I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to go load everything up and just get rid of it. What a feeling!

Today the knee felt pretty good when I got up. I did my usual - fed the pets, puttered a little bit and went back to bed. Just now, I finally went outside and walked; not too far. The roses are in bloom and I worked especially hard on them this past fall and spring to get more blooms. There are more blooms, not as many as I would like, but definitely more. Roses are something I love, but I've never been good at taking care of them. I've been working on that, so any improvement is good! The strawberries and raspberries are coming along and should be ready to pick by the 4th. I did not make it out to the cherry tree or our tomatoes out behind the barn. That is saved for this evening or tomorrow. It felt nice to get out.

Tomorrow will be busy. OS in the morning and PT in the afternoon. I am dreading it, but also want to see what the OS says about my ROM. There has been small, reluctant improvement. I just hope it is enough.

Very important question - How do you get up off the floor? I so wnat to get down and do some back stretches and a few arm exercises, but am scared I will have to call someone to get me up.

It's very early to be expecting a big increase in ROM. Any increase, no matter how small or slow, is progress.

It's not wise to get down on the floor for a few months at least.

Thanks, peeps! I tend to be a type A personality hidden under the guise of laid-back. I just want everything now. In addition, I have a very bad back that has been kept strong and healthy thru lots of gentle exercising anf swimming. The idea of the back pain coming back because I lose my muscle tone is not an idea I like to think about. I'm just itching to get on with the healing, but will take your word for it, relax, accept any change as improvement and stay off that darn floor.

I have a hard mattress (memory foam) in my spare bedroom. I used it for stretches and a bit of PT.

You are doing a great job. I have enjoyed reading about your progress. I look forward to hearing your report on visiting the OS.
