TKR Recovery as an April not very patient patient!

I like tip #1.

When I was 4 months post op I did an overnight trip, a 90 minute drive from home and ended up with a set back that lasted for months.

8. If you do fly, use the wheelchairs at the airport and ask for assistance
We actually have an article in the Library Flying soon after surgery
Any decent hotel will happily freeze and refreeze your ice packs.
I concur with this. I once got a job away from home, staying in a local hotel for a few days. But I was on one of my infrequent attempts to lose some weight and really didn't fancy dining al la cart for almost a week, never mind the cost. So I invested in a few of those plastic tubs with lids such as take-away emporiums use. I worked out my meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus drinks and milk, etc. and took them with me. During the journey, I used my little portable fridge which plugs into the car and in the hotel, i spoke with the desk clerk and asked if they would keep my bags of meals in their fridge and I would come and ask for them as I needed them! They were more than happy to oblige and as a result, I feasted on my own meals all week! Can't beat it!

These are wonderful tips! Down-to-earth, logical, and spoken by one who has both firsthand knowledge and a sense of humor. :heehee: Yes! Travel after TKR will require planning and concessions!

@ChrissiG, you should be fine for your trip. At six months post-op I took a long trip to visit family. It involved flying, car travel, hotels, and sightseeing/grandchildren. My new knees managed very well and only swelled a little that first night (after the flight and an hour-long standing in line to rent the car). They recovered overnight. Six month knees generally can handle life; just don’t get too ambitious with them, like thinking you’ll be skiing or rock-climbing.
