Now that I'm home a little more clearheaded I can share some the highlights of my week.

No nausea at all.

Spinal worked ok but I needed more meds in it,and once we figured that out (12+ Hours after surgery) it was ok.

Did not get up on surgery day. On Day 2 walked about 50 ft......that was tough!

Day 3 got a shower, and walked to and back from therapy. I just want to prove to myself that I could.

No blood transfusion.....they had some kind of recovery system collecting blood from the drain and then put it back in me......

No BM yet! That will be my focus today.

Showers are wonderful- kind of an energy source  I strongly recommend prunes (I got the Sunsweet indiv. packaged ones- I actually like them esp. compared to the alternative of drinking prune juice) and drinking lots and lots of water. Activity should also help. I had lots of gas, then a BM on the morning of post op day 2. I'd much rather hit the issue head on before it gets too painful! Good luck- sounds like you're doing great!

Glad you are home now, its so much better there.
I agree on the individual prunes; they are helpful.

Yummy prunes! Good iron for you too!

Finally had a BM!
I think I'm doing well....only real problem is soreness and having to depend on someone to help me up every time.....just wondering how long it takes to be able to get up by myself.....maybe I need higher arms on my chairs?

I'm basically 1 week out from surgery and I think I'm doing well......

Just was wondering about my walking and walking times.....so I'd like to compare my progress to others at 1 week post.....
- How far are you walking each walk?
- How many "walks" do you take each day?

Oudabounds - glad you are home and getting around!! Today is only Day 5 for me and I've been home about 24 hrs. Not walking around too much yet - just to bathroom or to kitchen. Will be interesting to see how I'll do after 1 week. Sounds like you're doing good to me!

I hope you have solved the getting up without help every time issue.

Here's what my PT taught me to do which made life much easier on that front.

When you are on the front edge of the chair or edge of the bed that you are rising from, and ready to stand, lean forward some and get your center gravity moving out over your feet as you stand.

The mechanics are vastly better, and if you notice it is what folks do all the time who have not just had their hips done!

You may wish to have your walker in front of you and one of your helpers with you and experiment.

I just had my second hip done on 5/15 and this trick learned on first hip in February has stayed with me!

Best wishes on a successful recovery,

Hip2it

Note the article highlighted in bold ...

First are the BoneSmart mantras ....
- rest, elevate, ice and take your pain meds by the clock
- if it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physiotherapist - to do it to you
- if your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again
- if you won't die if it's not done, don't do it
- never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can go to sleep!
- be active as much as you need to be but not more than is necessary, meaning so much that you end up being in pain, exhausted or desperate to sit down or lay down!

Pain management and the pain chart
Healing: how long does it take?
Chart representation of THR recovery
Dislocation risk and 90 degree rule
Energy drain for THRs
Pain and swelling control: elevation is the key
Activity progression for THRs
Home physio (PT)
Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it
Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

Glad you are home & things are going well. For the first few weeks just a little walking in between resting was sufficient for me....keep up the good progress but try not overdo it! Your body will sure let you know if you do. X

@outaboundshi we have same surgery day. One week for me too. I have been getting up every hour walking to kitchen bathroom. I also do my PT exercises 3 times a day. I feel tired.. Not pushing myself but getting up and moving. Might go out to side walk with husband tonight to walk a little

I wasn't doing much at the end of week 1 @Oudabounds ... A few bed exercises moving my legs a couple of times a day... Then sleeping. :) Clenching my glutes and twiddling my ankles when I sat in a chair... Then sleeping! :yes:Walking to the bathroom... And sleeping! Plus I walked downstairs once a day from day 5, to eat a meal with my family... Then went back to bed! So in total maybe half a dozen little 'walks' a day, mostly just about 6-8m (including there and back), and two about 12m (once to the table, and then back after the meal).

@hip2it......made some adjustments to seating arrangements and have possibly fixed problem.

Day 6 - walked 5-6 times with along walk of 18 minutes
Day 7 and 8 - walked 5-6 times each day with along walk of 15 minutes.

The rest of the day I'm sitting in recliner resting and doing ankle flex, bun squeezes, and thigh contractions.

Thanks for all the encouragement.
