TKR New Knee New Me?!

You all have been so wonderful! Thanks so much!
With the meds on board and icing (like I'm addicted to ice) all of the time has really helped!
The pillow propping photo, I can't thank you enough and I am going to try that!! I currently don't have but one small (owl) pillow under my knee because the support feels good... Yes, the clinicians are great, I work with them, but to tell me to raise my leg above my heart twice a day gives me the assumption I'm not supposed to raise it any other time...
I'm so glad I found y'all!
Much Appreciation! ;)

It sounds as though you are having a much better day! Here's to many more to come!

Like yourself I thought I'd be up and around in a matter of 4 weeks. After all I am in excellent physical condition and have rapidly bounced back in a few weeks from other surgeries from prostrate to hernia. Now some 6 weeks post op I've come to appreciate it is going to take at least three months before I feel I can handle a normal work routine without getting exhausted and having my knee stiffen up at the end of the day. At this point I've no pain and little swelling, but the stiffness and bands of tightness are very disconcerting. Likewise the knee is still heavy and clunky with some popping when flexed likely due to the binding of tissues still healing. Given the multiple layers of muscle and fascia that are sewn back together, I now reluctantly accept that healing can't be rushed and it will take much longer than I naively hoped for. It truly is a marathon not a sprint to recovery.

I have to agree with Jim9999... Since returning to work on 7/24/17, week four of surgery... I too feel the tightness and popping and clicking... My knee stiffness is beyond belief and I can not raise my leg to avoid the swelling like I thought I'd be able to. I recommend, take the full time off!! Coming home exhausted, no interest in anything but ice to reduce swelling and being afraid of the "what did I do..." As i am afraid of injuring the beautiful job my physician did!! Im still able to reach my ROM beyond 90° but the stiffness and swelling and pure exhaustion is NOT worth it!!
Plans this weekend... NOTHING but ice!!

As new as your knee is, icing and elevating the best you can sounds like a wonderful way to spend your weekend!

Unfortunately, the stiff, tight band feeling can last for months, but it's considered *normal* in this context. It wears off slowly over time, with lots of TLC. Take a peek at SusieShoes thread today on the subject of knee noises. She wrote a great essay and there are many thoughtful and fun responses; you'll enjoy it.

Back at work after six weeks ? Wowza, it's understandable that you are hugging the ice!
I'm at four weeks now and still nap in the afternoon - real naps, sleeping and snoring myself awake naps, not a cat nap. Although the cat likes to nap with me. Sorry, couldn't resist.
In any case, please try to be nice and caring for your baby knees.

Update at week 7! Feeling great!! Stayed with it and worked every day, nothing is gonna set me back... Except, I have a new development... Surprise!!
Way back in week 3, I noticed a suture sticking out of my knee, near the knee cap. My daughters are nurses and one of them gently grabbed it and it came right out! Now at that very area, I have a red raised inflamed bump. Anyone ever experience that? I have another follow up on the 17th, think I should wait? My girls think I need to be seen asap, "it may abscess mom!"
Other than that, my PT friends and co-workers love my gait and I'm baby stepping stairs! I feel great at work, bought compression hose and icing under my desk. Days are good now! :spin:

Welcome @A New Knee, I'll be at 6 weeks on Tuesday, and I also nap with a cat or two on my lap every afternoon, but real, hard sleeping! I'm even beginning to question if I'll be ready to return to work at 3 months, this recovery has been very hard on me. We're all different, but what what we have in common is that we all went through major surgery where leg bone parts were cut off and artificial prostheses were placed there. That's no joke! It's not like you cut your finger and got a couple,of stitches! I have come to accept that I have to let this leg fully heal because if I go back to work too soon and re-injure myself, I'll be back to square one all over again. And I don't want to go back there. As for your meds.Tramadol is good, but I would have thought they would've given you something ng a bit stronger, such as Norco or Percocet to start out. Good luck!

2018 Question & Update!
The app, "MyKneeGuide," is out the same forum as is here? It will not take my user name/password...
Update.... My left knee replacement is fantastic! So much so that I am having my right knee done on Monday 12/17!!
Once I had the LTKR done I noticed my legs are different lengths. After xrays and studies and shoe inserts, my OS finally offered the RTKR! Believe me, I've learned my lesson my first tone around and will make sure I get plenty of meds and ice too!
I'd love to use the app mentioned on here, just would like it to be the same forum as on here.
Looking forward to giving future updates, see ya on the other side!

If you're looking to download the app "My Knee Guide" from the app store, it is the same one we talk about on BoneSmart. Once of our surgeon partners, Dr. Brian Hatten, developed the app and he is the one who maintains it. If you want to use it, I suggest you download it from the app store and make sure you can register. If not, post a problem thread in the Bugs, Errors & Techy Questions forum (drop down menu under the Help & Information tab at the top of the page) and we'll get Dr. Hatten to help you resolve the problem.
