Hi Sara thank god for xrays it was my xray that saw I needed both done which was a complete shock at the time.

Sfina48 i was diagnosed just on MRI in the beginning, i too had trouble coming to terms with the decision as i only have an occasional limp when i overdo things, i even accused them of getting the MRI's mixed up :heehee: However the lovely people on this forum have helped me imensly to accept things as they are, while i still naturally am a bit apprehensive i can honestly say i am not scared stiff like i was initially.
The realization that my condition won't get any better being ignored is also spurring me on.
Hang in there, and i can advise is read read and read some more, i truly believe that our fear is of the unknown so equip yourself with the knowledge this forum has to offer it really does help. Hugs from Tasmania.xxx

Hi Sfina48, I'm new here too. I had this very discussion about the xray's just the other day with my current doctor. I've seen several doctors over the past nearly 2 years and this one, and the one who will do my surgery, is fairly new to me. He never did an MRI and to my knowledge hadn't yet looked at previous MRI's taken by other doctors in the past. He only took new xrays. When asked about the ability to dx with just the xrays, he told us that he had years of experience looking at them and was able to see arthritis and other issues simply by looking at the xrays. He also used my own description of symptoms and my answers to his many questions. I too am nervous and afraid of this surgery, but I find myself becoming more comfortable in stages as I read, research and learn. I also take heart in reading the threads here..both pre-op and post-op and hearing how others have made it through and how they are doing. My best to you :)

Hi Billy, thank for your reply....Wow, what a shock indeed that it showed you needed both! I guess there is the assumption that X-Rays are not as as thorough as an MRI, at least that is my assumption.. :) Best Regards, Sara

Hi Tasmania! Thanks for your reply and kind words of encouragement! Boy do I need them now :)...Yes, I am reading through the threads and learning that the fear IS of the unknown...all of the what ifs...What if I do not recover well, what if it doesn't work, what if I cant work after...I know I need the surgery and that I must go through with it, I really appreciate this forum and everyone's responses! I so am so moved! Thank you again! With Warm Regards, Sara

Hi Kayviun! Very interesting that you have had this actual discussion with your doctor. I now realize that the surgeon that I am using knew exactly what he was talking about looking at my X-Ray, I however had no idea what I was looking at, Lol, of course he explained everything to me. I too have been going through the threads and reading everyone's experiences Pre Op and post Op and learning a lot here! I know that the worst is the time before the surgery, which is right now and I just know we will get through this! Thanks again! Very Best Regards, Sara :)

Hi Sara, I only decided to finally schedule my hip surgery last month, but was diagnosed with arthritis in my right hip about 8 years ago. I was able to baby it along for years with massage, stretching, heat, and chiropractic care. I was terrified of the prospect of surgery, had not had any surgery in my whole life, other than tonsils out as a kid- in the dark ages!:heehee: So this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer, have now had 3 surgeries, and no longer afraid to do the hip. I realized that my quality of life was terrible, everything was planned around my hip and being able to walk anywhere. And I also realized that my surgeons were professionals that had my best interests at heart, and did these surgeries every day. I am scheduled for surgery in 2 days, RTHR, and I am "appropriately anxious" as my OS put it, but excited at the thought of being pain free and more active again!:dancy:

Mine was a bit different. My xray just showed minor erosion of the cartilage but fortunately I had a very bad flare on the day I was to see the OS. (never happens this way but I was lucky). He had me get an MRI because he could not justify the surgery with the xray results. MRI showed more than the xray but I was in so much pain. He operated and my report says stage 4. So the xray and the MRI did not show enough damage to support the surgery but he saw that I couldn't sit, stand..do anything. I have to have an open MRI which is not as good as a closed one which is probably why the MRI did not show the extensive damage.
On the other hand, when xrays shows damage enough to support a decision for surgery (from the OS), it supports the insurance claim. Xrays are not sent to the insurance company when there is a claim but if the claim gets questioned for medical necessity then they may be asked for. And for many of you..do not be surprised if you have to go through PT, cortisone etc before surgery will be approved. Just the way it works today.

Hi Zumzumpammy! Sorry for my late reply! Thank you for your reply! So sorry that you were diagnosed with Breast Cancer, I have a very dear friend of mine just diagnosed last month.
I had 1 cortisone shot that didnt so much about 10 years ago, I have had physical therapy too but I cannot open my legs now at all, no range of motion. I have a bladder disease and I cannot open my legs for a proper exam...
I see that your surgery is scheduled for today and I wish you the very best, I will watch for your updates on how you are doing...Very Best Regards, Sara

Hi Knitter4444!
I have had hip pain for many years I have had only 1 cortisone shot and physical therapy about 10 years ago. I found the the shot didnt do so much to aid in the pain so I never went again. In the last year or so the pain for me has gotten much worse and now my leg buckles and I get a sharp pain in the joint as my leg buckles. So i got scared and saw the surgeon who took an Xray and I was told I need a replacement. He said I also have a bone Spur.
So you are saying that the insurance company can deny the surgery? I assume the hospital will check with the insurance company Before the surgery? Should I check with them? Has this happened to anyone else here?
Thanks! Very Best Regards, Sara

The physician gets the authorization for the surgery..not the hospital. If you are on Medicare..not an Advantage plan but Original Medicare, at this point there is no pre-auth process but there needs to be medical documentation that other methods have been tried. Your xrays should support your surgery.

Hi Merry, you have got me thinking, I have only had 1 cortisone shot and that was over 10 years ago, I am in my husbands ins through his job. Makes sense what you are saying maybe they won't approve surgery w/o trying other things. The physicion i saw was in the hospital.
I am going for a second opinion ...thank you for the info, best regards Sara

You always should consider a second opinion when you are facing surgery. Pain is also an indication but if your xrays show bone on bone they should approve it. But don't be surprised if they want you to go to PT. So you go once and say its too painful and its documented. Shhh.. I didn't tell you that.

Hi and welcome to BoneSmart! I see you've already received a number of responses from our members. It's a great and supportive family you will have on your side now.

As you learn to use the forum, you may want to spend some time in the "how to" area. You'll find many threads that explain how the various forum functions work. You get to this area by mouse hovering over the tab at the top of the page that says HELP & INFO. You will see HOW TO USE THE FORUM as a choice on the drop-down menu.

Hi Sfina48,
You are certainly doing the right thing. I had the same symptoms as you and also the dysplasia. My hip was " shot" ... To use a colloquial expression! The decision took me some time as I, like most, was very nervous about it but I finally took the decision in Feb this year. We had a big OS trip planned and I knew my unstable hip would spoil it all. So...April 5 the deed was done. Quite an extensive op as I had a few issues. Now 7 months on I am firing on all cylinders. Leg was lengthened 3cms, femur repositioned and all most successfully. 4 months later we had a great trip. I could walk fir miles. Now I am back at the gym...pilates, step classes, boxing and all. AND as you can see by my age, I'm no spring chicken. So go girl! It's a great decision. I look forward to following your progress. All the very best from Oz!

Maeve, Wow you are an inspiration to me, I am so happy for you that the surgery made a great difference for you! It is most certainly a difficult decision as I am going back and forth with it. I will see what my second opinion doctor says... We shall see. Thank you!! Very best regards, Sara :)

[Bonesmart.org] New Here and have a question...
Sfina48, I have edited the three post above so that members you wanted to tag were actually tagged.
To tag a forum member, all you have to do is to type @ directly in front of their user name with no space between the @ and the user name. Remember that their user name and their actual name are probably different. Be sure that you correctly type the user name or it will not work. While you are typing, a box will appear in the bottom right of your screen; you may click on the correct user name there rather than continue typing. To be sure that the member is tagged, look at your post after you have clicked "Post Reply"; if the tag worked, the user name will now be blue and underlined.

Do not follow the user name with a hyphen (-). The computer recognizes this as part of the user name, which it is not, and the tag fails. Also on occasion if the @ is the first thing on the line, it may be necessary to indent a couple of time to get it to work. This is why it is necessary to check your post after you have clicked "Post Rely" to be sure the tag has worked.

When the tag works, the member will get an alert at the top of his/her page, and by clicking the alert will be taken directly to your post. Hope this helps.

I was actually diagnosed by walking, ok limping and dragging my leg past the OS on the first visit. He did x-rays and when I walked back into the exam room and looked at my x-rays I knew "something wasn't right". I had the cauliflower look on hip one and very blurred lines on hip two. First thing the OS said was both hips were shot and I needed them both replaced...that was followed by a massive panic attack. I spent the next few days reading and reading on here, so glad I found this place! Went back to OS and confirmed doing hip one, decided hip two would be done if it started bothering me after hip one, that lasted about 8 weeks...then scheduled hip two. So glad I did both in a short period of time...everything will be going up hill from here!
