THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

Sounds like an amazing trip @ddj . Hope you and that new hip enjoy every minute. Let us know how you get on when you are back home.

Wow @ddj
I'm so jealous.
Your trip sounds "once in a lifetime " amazing...
although sounds it could be hard for a 5 month old hip.
Love to hear about it when you return.

Oh my…how exotic! It’s reminding me of that show Naked and Afraid, or whatever it’s called. The one on the Discovery channel where they navigate all types of unchartered terrain and live out in the wild jungle. You’re BRAVE! Great news you’re doing so well. Please come back and share the story of this adventure and how you fared. We’ll be all ears.
Be well and have a safe enjoyable journey!

Just over 6 months post surgery:
Have been home from the Amazon Adventure now for about 2 weeks. The Amazon trip was an incredible experience!! (33 hr plane ride was VERY long but was broken up into 5 plane changes!) This trip was to celebrate my husband’s 70th birthday. Guess we could have also label it the Geriatric Amazon Explorer’s Trip (!)

Fishing (catch and release except for the piranha which we ate for lunch) was interesting…piranha were crazy aggressive, would bite through the lures, ate our bait, bit through steel line and took off with the line weights too!

Walked through unexplored jungle, slept in a tent, showered behind a two sided wall of palm leaves, walked barefoot around the camp, swam in the river, rested on the rocks in the sun, and survived with only 2 changes of clothes (one on and one drying in the sun (humidity was not pleasant…skin, clothes, everything were always sort of damp).

Not sure if this many pictures will upload.
If they do:
1. Me and my 6 lb piranha catch (lunch!).
2. Pitched our tent under a thatched roof to protect from the monsoon downpours (during one we actually had to bail out the boat because so much water was coming down)
3. Another fish…can’t remember the species
4. Heading home (small boats ran out of gas…no gas stations so we hitched a ride on a slow moving houseboat…felt like I was in a movie).
5. My pole in the Rio Cupacupa waiting for a “not-piranha fish”. Water is really that brown…part of the Rio Negro system that feeds the Amazon).
6 The air strip we landed on followed by a 2 hr boat ride to the actual camp site

My new hip did awesome. I did use a cane (cut from a tree at camp) when walking in the jungle. Fell one time on the river rocks, controlled my fall and only got bruised. Actually fell on my left (5 year old hip), which was a good thing since we were about 10 hours from any medical care! Although it is still a bit sore on that side…no pain in the new hip at all!

Speaks to the importance of pacing recovery for your body and being patient (most of the time) with the “getting better“ one step at a time.

I am so thankful for the experience, very happy I went forward with the 2nd hip replacement which was a hard decision related to the difficult (mostly) emotional recovery with the first.

I know this is a long post but I wanted to share the adventure with people who have been so supportive.

Wow. Quite an adventure. Glad the hips held up. Thanks for posting pics.

Wow! What a trip. What an experience! Glad you enjoyed and made it safely back home.
Thanks for sharing an account and photos of the trip of a lifetime.
A wonderful week and holiday season to you!

Just thought of one funny part of our trip I wanted to share about traveling with more metal parts in my body… In 10 (round trip) plane changes I did set off the metal detector each time. I prepared by wearing a very lightweight outfit and no jewelry. Each time was hand searched 2-3 times. English speaking airport searches went well….tried explaining in Spanish to a Portuguese speaking agent that I have a new hip by saying the Spanish word for new and pointing!!! Fortunately charades works in every language!
Having new body parts can bring interesting experiences in airports

I wondered how we would make out going through the metal detectors.
I have a picture of my xray. Do you think that would help?

Do not think so. My husband has a card for his hip and the mechanical valve in his heart…still gets searched. My communication challenges were the most amusing.. guess can always offer to show off battle scars! I for one appreciate the security in the crazy times here in the U.S!
