Revision THR Leg Length Discrepancy

I just sent my X-rays last week so it'll be awhile, I'm sure, before I hear back from him.

Last week I got a second opinion from a well-know orthopedist in my area. He said, yes, they put in the wrong size part, and he uses some Stryker but wouldn't use the model my surgeon used. He usually uses Omni-Science, which is modular/adjustable. He told me I not only have abnormally wide femur necks, I also have abnormally long femur bones. And the stem of the replacement has sunk in my femur from the date of surgery to the 6-week post-op. I don't know if it's dropped more since then! He told me doing a revision isn't advisable because if they take out the stem and put in a new one, there's a good possibility my femur bone will shatter and I'll have even more problems. He said I should have my left hip replaced, and I will not have problems in the future. I see the surgeon who wants to replace my left hip next week and I"ll have him take new X-rays. I'm still waiting to hear back from one of my three attorneys.

So sorry to read of the issues you are having @lynnsfave - I do hope you can get some relief soon.. :)

Hi @lynnsfave - All I can say is WOW and that's pretty scary!! Does your left hip need replacing because of the screw up in your right side or you were expecting to replace that hip anyway at some point in time due to degeneration of it?

My left hip replacement is scheduled for December 10, but I'm going to cancel it. I've realized two wrongs don't make a right. There are too many unanswered questions and my surgeon doesn't care enough to investigate. He didn't bother to take new X-rays to see what the status is. He promises to make my legs even, but the initial surgeon said they were even after the surgery and obviously they're not. My surgeon puts most of the blame on my anatomy for the LLD, but I don't buy it. He didn't think my spine would straighten out with this surgery. My problem right now is the new pain in my right hip. I knew the stem had dropped, and I think it's dropped even more since my visit with my 'second opinion' doctor. It's apparently pulling down the ball, and the pain is increasing. That won't go away if my left hip is replaced and it may happen with that hip too. I'm going to ask the 'second opinion' doctor to do the revision. He'll put in the correct length and width. I'll have to live with the fact my femur could shatter, but I'm willing to do that. I met with an attorney, but he hasn't given me a yes or no answer yet.

Boy, I can certainly understand your reluctance to stay with a surgeon like your initial one!!! It does sound like you're making the right decision here. You do have confidence in the "second opinion" surgeon, right???? This is essential plus you need all your questions and concerns addressed before agreeing to surgery.

Please let us know how things go. I'm so sorry to hear you're having to go through all this!!

Hi @lynnsfave - Call dr. padget at HSS and request for a phone consult appointment...also ask him about OS recommendations in your area.

I do have a lot of confidence in my SO surgeon. I instantly liked him. He took all the time he needed to explain things to me (even went out and got a model to show me what happened and what should have happened), and let me ask all the questions I had. My initial surgeon feels it's a need to know basis, but he feels I don't need to know anything! It's always "i don't know what you mean by that" and then quickly changes the subject. He's an excellent surgeon, don't get me wrong. But he's just not that concerned about all the issues I'm having now or if I'll continue to have them.

Good idea, @toohip. I looked up Dr. Padgett's number, and I'll call tomorrow and see if he'll call back when he has time. He may be off for the Thanksgiving holiday. But it'll be good to get a third opinion. Thanks!

And to everyone, have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving.

My surgeon advised that due to my weight that I could end up with a leg length difference at my first appointment. He said if it happened he would order custom orthotic for my shoes. Never mentioned having to do the other hip. I wish you the best of luck. I'm sorry you are dealing with the other issues with the stem and femur.

I'm having my right hip replacement replaced January 27. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone. May your holidays be blessed and 2015 pain-free!

Just got a reply from him. He told me about a 3D x-ray machine in Scottsdale. I'm afraid it's too late for that.

I was supposed to have my right hip revision this past Wednesday, but it was cancelled because my surgeon is sick! After the stress and getting psyched up for the surgery, it was cancelled. I still don't have a new date. I'm frustrated, since we have to stop taking certain meds for 7-10 days prior to the surgery and have to use a chlorhexidine antibiotic soap four days prior to the surgery. I don't have to continue not taking my meds if it's going to be two weeks or more. And I don't want to wait two weeks or more.

@lynnsfave This is every hippie's nightmare. So sorry your surgery is postponed. But on the plus side it's better to have the surgeon you trust and ensure he/she is on top form. Start calling every day. You may indeed fill another patient's cancelled slot. Please keep us updated. Hang in there!

I have been calling every day. I wouldn't be surprised if his nurse doesn't call me back today!

Good luck!

The call finally came through. Supposedly the surgery scheduler called everyone, obviously except me. Anyhow, the surgery is on for Wednesday. Hope the surgeon doesn't have a relapse!

I didn't realize until about 2 yrs post op how much shorter my operated side leg was, a podiarist called it to my attention and by then my knee was more messed up, causing my foot/ankle more stress.....I have to build my right side up with orthotics, heel lift, and innersoles....

All this lopsided mess caused spinal stenosis which I worked on with acupuncture and mesotherapy and special stretching for the spine, I get so sick of not being better after this replacement....

Often often wonder where I'd be had I not done it.....probably still have the messy groin pain mess....which I don't' have now.
