Knee pain advice

The actual joint probably doesn't hurt, it's the bone above or below that hurts because the joint is grinding into the bone. Everyone's pain is different, but if you're unhappy with one ortho I suggest looking for another to give an opinion.

In my years of field experience I went to many MVCs and fire scenes where police EMS and firemen were hurt.

They are ( and I am one of them! ) the WORST patients. We ought to have a club..
We have enough medical knowledge to be dangerous:rofsign: Just go for it.. believe me your surgeon knows more about knees than you do. I know more about hearts than my ortho does but that does not affect my decision to trust him with my knees.
( and I know less than the magicians in the cath lab)

The "match to the side of knee" I cal the "hot poker". Mine feels like someone is driving a hot poker into my knees. It comes out of the blue even when sleeping.

I have to remind myself that my 20 year old mind can't get my 60 year old body do everything I want to without consequences (pain) like it used to. I am consistently reminded that the body does wear out.

That's why parents are younger than grandparents.

A big deciding point for me was last fall when my sweetheart and I visited my 104 year grandmother drug me down the hallway of the assisted living center she agreed to move into at 103.

After talking to TKR recipients and reading success stories here I am excited to once again be able to climb the 14ers, go on walks with wife n dogs and so on.

We are privileged to live in a time of great medical advancements and I am going to take advantage of it to regain quality of life.

I made all kinds of excuses to put off my knee replacement which I had needed for years. My knee started giving way on me. I fell one to many times and ended up with a broken hip. I'm just saying you're taking a chance. It's not worth it. Good luck!

Weather never affected my knees.

I think you need new knees. I was slow to come to terms with my need for a new partial but best thing ever and that pain is gone! Once the cartilage is gone, your time is up and you might as well move forward into a better future. Good luck

@Fireman x-rays pretty much tell the story on a damaged knee joint. By "space" he means that on the X-ray there should be space between the tibia and femur. This "space" is where the cartilage is. If there is no space then it is referred to as "bone on bone" which means just what it says.....that your femur and tibia and rubbing together. If you want to try to buy more time you could ask your doctor about Synvisk injections. They bought me 3-4 more years but for some people, they don't help at all. Your knee is only going to get worse. The joint will not get any better. When the knee joint becomes that damaged it's simply a matter of "when" and not "if" you will have a knee replacement.......unless of course you just want to continue to suffer.

@Fireman when you stretch you probably create a little space in the joint. So for a period of time your bones aren't rubbing together. I used to do this all the time. I would stretch, I would use bands and pull on my leg to create space. This will give you temporary relief but eventually the bones are going to settle back because there is no cartilage between them.

And on your "overnight" thing.......I've know for over 10 years that I was going to have to have a TKR. (I'm 47). However, up until about 18 months ago I worked out 5x per week (Crossfit) and could do anything that I wanted. Then one night we were on vacation and we were just walking around after dinner and I felt something. I don't even know what it was, but I felt a pain shoot all the way up my leg. I didn't twist it or anything, I was simply walking and it hit me. From that point forward my knee never got better. My guess is that I had a tiny bit of cartilage left that was keeping me from being completely bone on bone and it tore. But for whatever reason, even after working out 5x per week and being able to manage, something happened that night that pushed my knee over the edge. It sounds like that something similar probably happened to you.

The "hot match" thing hits me at night, and when it does, sleep is impossible...it's a pain like no other. I also have pain down the front of my shin just below the knee itself, so you sound pretty typical to me. I am now doing pre-op exercises, which usually helps the pain for a while afterwards, so I can see that your stretches could help relieve the pain. Find yourself a good OS, and follow their recommendations. I'm scheduled for LTKR Jan 24th....not looking forward to it, but it sure beats going on like this. Good Luck to you!!!!

@Fireman

Sorry to hear your knee is giving you increased pain. I am not an expert, but I think that there are no rules with knees!!! I was told I needed bilateral replacements when I was 19. I lived with them for 20 years, because, well...I was 19! I knew it was time when my quality of life suffered, my sleep was affected, and I started missing a lot of things because I was in so much pain. Even knowing that, at 39, I will likely face revisions, I am ok with that because once I heal, I will have my life back. I just didn't realize how much I wanted that until my first knee started to do so well! I've had a complication with my second knee, but it's ok because it will improve. With your x-ray showing so much bone damage, regardless if there are soft tissue issues, the bones are still going to be bad.

Good luck with your decision. I have not once regretted having mine done and I'm actually looking forward to being active this summer! Please let us know if you have any questions or need support!!!
