THR July 13 Rebirth

@EAW Welcome! I've had plenty of pity parties as well, it is allowed. I even invite people to them! You'll probably hit a nice progress curve in about a week or so and be very excited about it. The first few weeks are blurry to me now but by week 3-4 I started to see more leaps in recovery. Then there are all sorts of plateaus after that. And some setbacks are inevitable as well.

I was intrigued by your surgery "souvenir" in that I wanted to do the same, but forgot to ask!! Seems I may have been drugged at the hospital..... :heehee:

At least to see an image of it, not sure I'd want to keep the head- but would love to have seen the sorry thing! I'd be interested in your photo if you want to post it. I need the other one done soon, so this time I may request a pic or video of the old joint, for the record. What a novel holiday card I could make!! Lol Not sure they will comply though, as it's a full on hospital where I'll be going.

Chin up, leg up, ice down and know that things will start to improve very very soon. :egypdance::egypdance:

And what are you doing up so late @Mojo333 ?!
Or is that up so early?
I'm done with tonight's Netflix roster, and about to sink into my pillow haven! Goodnight!

:mcoffee:I'm an early riser..now that my hips are fixed, and I actually sleep,
Sleep well, @1stSurgery and I too should like to see a photo EAW

I walked (slowly) around my yard today and noticed all of the weeds overtaking my flowers and there is nothing I can do about it.
Heck - I do this and I don't have any problems with my hips! :heehee: We have just started to get rain after a long, very dry spell. I can literally see the weeds growing.

You will soon be out there fighting the fight again @EAW . Just a bit more time and patience.

Thank you,All, for your kind and encouraging repli s. I am very thankful to have a place to go when I feel blue. I do have lovely friends and family but they have not been through this before.

As to my souvenir :yikes:, here are some pics. Notice the marks where it was scraping on bone. Routinely, I would become stuck in a position, or, my hip would catch as I walked, causing me to lose my balance. Now I can see why!

As to getting pics or even the bone, start your campaign early and mention it to the nurses and the doc. I learned from the nurses that my doc had taken pics before. The bone thing was tricky. One of the OR nurses totally got why I wanted it and she championed for me in the OR. I suspect my surgeon looked the other way. It really has brought me a lot of peace-especially when well-meaning acquaintances say Im too young for hip replacement.

Gadzooks!! Jumpin' Jehosephat! Great Caesar's Ghost! (I'm running out of exclamations) ... but.. but...those photos of your own hip joint. What a conversation piece to pull out at parties and in bars. Just thinking about it is enough to make me order a double--or a triple-- and get the party rolling.

I have been the opposite. I didn't want to know or envision any of the gory details. I keep brushing it away, trying not to think about it or dwell on it. I do admire your cool objectivity.

@An54 I didn’t always have such objectivity but since becoming the CA state trauma coordinator, I see all kinds of gore when I visit surgeons and go on grand rounds. I was sad about becoming part cyborg but it now :) :-) (:

Yummy. But would it be kosher?

Only if the surgeon is a rabbi?

And to the OP - THANKS! I can NEVER unsee that... I don't want to know where my meat comes from. i just want it go be delicious... :loll:

Better days are ahead but be sure to listen to your body. I didn't have my exhaustion episodes until days 5 and 6 after I over-did it JUST a tad...:dancy:

Hi @EAW
Very informative. I don't mind looking at someone else's but after seeing your photos I am not sure I'd want
to see any part of my own surgery, or body parts.

I find it Interesting how they drape and how your head is behind draping.
I've yet to see a surgery scene and most certainly didn't care to look at any leading up to my THR.

What is that hole towards the center of the bone in the sawed off portion? Third photo down from the top.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi @EAW

My guess is that its made by the implement which the surgeon embeds into the bone in order the prize out the femoral head.

Thanks! That makes sense. Didn't think of that.

Wow, thanks for sharing those. That is great to see what the femur head is like and be able to keep it. I got a set of 5 photos of my surgery. They show the left hip being operated on. It's really cool to see how the surgery is performed. Watched a great you tube video of the surgery (afterwards not before)so I could work out which order the photos happened in. Here's one of the photos of the femoral head. It was in pretty bad shape.

I saved my tonsils..when I was 12, but they were in formaldehyde in a small bottle in my sock drawer. My mother didnt even know I talked Dr. Johnny into giving them to me for show and tell at school. They looked like huge peach seeds. A year later, they lid kind of came loose and well...my mother almost fainted when she was putting my socks away.

I asked for it, but my OS said in was contaminated, and that he did not want to put staff at risk.
I thought it best not to argue with the man who was cutting me open.
