Hi, I'm new

Hi @Gretel
Sorry your hip and back pain has been restricting your life. I was in the same boat, with the hips anyway, the surgery was the best thing I did. I read so much on it I had of time, tried the steroid hip injections, no luck with those. My recovery was a good one, we had great confidence in my surgeon, once I started walking I never looked back. That was July 6 of this year, I have been riding horses since week7 riding motorcycles and ATVs. Just recently, because my dog and I got so fat, I have started walking 2 miles a day. I would do more but poor dog he struggles with it but we both need to lose a few pounds LOL.

Bilateral is the way to go in my opinion anyway. Get it over and done with one surgery. Wishing you well on your research, don't overthink it and put yourself in the hands of those that know what they're doing :-)

I'm getting cold feet! I think the problem is I'm not in huge pain and I know I will be after surgery. My life is certainly impacted by my hips and my quality of life isn't great. It's been many months since I've had a good nights sleep and I can't walk far. Just doing stuff around the house is as much as I can cope with. I miss being able to go out for walks. I know the surgery will help me but I'm scared of post op pain and being so useless :(

@Gretel, I think everyone has cold feet at least once before surgery. Yes, you will have pain afterwards, but you will also have lovely pain meds the will take care of that. I'm 2 weeks post op and only taking Tylenol. And think of it, a few weeks into your recovery, no hip pain. Trust your doctor and have faith. Hugs

Oh @Gretel......I feel for you. I truly do. All those agonizing hours of weighing it all out.
Should I, or shouldn't I. For myself personally and I'm not the only one.....I wasn't in horrific pain afterward.
I took four Oxy and I was done. My pain was managed by Extra Strength Tylenol for only a few weeks beyond surgery. I do have a high pain threshold and understand we're all different but you may not be in as much pain as you're anticipating post surgery. You aren't "useless" as you put it for long either. Look at it as a break from your daily routine rather than as being useless. A mini detour, a little vacay.

Your life is being impacted in a negative way. Loss of sleep, unable to walk any distance, lack of the ability to do all you want around the house. Do you want to go on like this and probably progressing to a worsened state, which could cause physical limitations to possibly affect your knees, or your back, creating more problems for yourself. Or....take a chance that the pain you are imagining won't occur as you're thinking and you will regain your life. Life as you knew it, pre OA pain.

I think having second thoughts is very typical. The surgery is final and it's a really big deal! All I can say is I haven't regretted my decision once. I think if you check this forum you will find that sentiment echoed through and through.

Prayers that you make the right decision for you.
We're here to encourage and offer input no matter what you decide. Please take advantage of that.

Thanks @Miggie and @Layla I appreciate your support. I already have a very dodgy back. I know the way I'm moving with my hips can't be helping it. I do think surgery is the way to go. Just being a sook lol I've been beating myself up cause I've been trying to lose weight and not really getting anywhere with that.

You will never be happy about having to have someone replace a defective body part. I KNOW it affected my back because that's where most of my pain was. I finally had such chronic pain I was not able to sleep at all...ten to 20 minutes at a time from exhaustion. It was misdiagnosed for years.
So I was past time.
I know had I known earlier I may have even put it off....out of fear...but my body would not have been so worn down and I would've been back to my life earlier.
You are the only one who can say when you are ready, but don't feel you will regret. Just make sure you have a surgeon you know is proficient in hip replacement.
Hope you have a Good weekend.
By the way, my OS pain became totally untouchable with meds. Meds might have numbed my anxiety but couldn't alleviate that hip pain.
Try to have a good day, you will know when you are ready.:friends:

Thanks @Mojo333 .
I'm just back from having pre op bloods, swabs, urine test and ecg. They are thorough! Two weeks to go till the big day. I'm feeling more certain now :)

Yes, my pre-op was also extremely thorough. The hospital where I had mine done is owned by several orthopedic doctors so they had mostly joint replacement patients.
How many times have you heard these words yet..."at the same time?"
I remember I felt very odd when each of the pre-op techs would ask which hip I was getting replaced. I'd say both. And get that "at the same time?!"
I started to think, is this THAT unusual?
This will truly give you your life back Gretel. You will leave that terrible hip pain behind and even though the first weeks are a little rough, it is nothing compared to how debilitating or lived had become.
My guess, is by your birthday...you are going to be so so glad to be feeling young again.
Keep that positive attitude and you will be doing great.

Hi @Gretel
I see your moving forward and seem to have a great attitude.
You're going to be so happy over the next few months in losing that pain
and regaining strength and mobility you've lost.
Please keep us posted so we can encourage and cheer you on in your recovery.
I'm excited for you, Gretel!
Best wishes for a great rest of the week....
