Considering A Replacement - New Haven, CT

:hi: You have found a wonderful place to be. The people and support are awesome. There is lots of very beneficial information. I find kernels of info everywhere, but especially the library and anything from Josephine.

I'm a military mom and I don't know all of the ins & outs of the benefits, but I know (when you are active USN) that there are choices that will allow you to use your benefits and see non-military doctors.

As others have mentioned, right now your world is getting smaller and smaller. If I had known what I know now (and had found this site sooner) - I would have gotten this surgery earlier. But I was afraid and didn't have enough knowledge to feel empowered to make the right decision. This site is amazing - you will get the support and knowledge you need to feel confident so that you can take back your life!

I live in CT also and had a hip replacement with Dr. Irving who operates out of Milford Hospital. He was highly recommended to me by my GP and I have been very pleased. I need replacement on my other hip and will definitely go back to him.
Good luck with your decision.

Lol, double posts just seems to happen sometimes @KHill. Given the area you live, you may have too many good choices! And just as others will tell you, these old parts are doing us no good. So looking forward to a matching set next weekend. When my hips first started, I tried to write it off to being old. With the severe osteoarthritis, the truth is my hips were old. I will have a set to keep up with me. At your age you will really be able to use the replacement!

Good luck in your search @KHill.
Thank you. And you're absolutely right. I'll most likely get some good use out of a replacement.

wow. I used to work at Milford Hospital. I'll look into Dr. Irving

Milford has its own orthopedic wing with just joint replacements and they have one of the lowest infection rates in CT. The wing is only open Monday through Friday and closes down for the weekend.

But you probably knew all that!

@KHill I used some of the research tools we have in our Library to look up knitquilt's suggested surgeon. He has some good numbers and seems highly recommended by his patients. Here's the links to those sites.

https://www.checkbook.org/surgeonratings/ is done by a not-for-profit consumer organization. Doesn't cover all types of surgeries, just mostly high risk procedures. (a plastic surgeon I saw for a hand issue is not listed, for instance).

https://projects.propublica.org/surgeons/ ProPublica is a nonprofit journalism organization. This covers 8 elective procedures (including Hip and Knee) and surgeon scorecards based on complications encountered. Downside is that they only track Medicare patients, so a large segment of patients with other insurance aren't included. Has a lot of search and graph options, including by hospital in a particular state.

https://projects.propublica.org/docdollars/ See which doctors took money (and how much) from drug and device makers. Only through 2015, though. Not always a bad thing, as some surgeons may be receiving payments when they have invented or helped develop a new medical device.

Lol oh yes. I was there when they added that wing to the 3rd floor. That was also one of my favorite units to work in. Loved the nurses. Can't imagine possibly being a patient there. lol

Thanx so much. I'm going to see if I can set something up with him asap

The nurses are still great. They are kind and caring and seem to really enjoy working there. If you do decide to make an appt. with Irving, do it soon - he’s really busy. I need to decide when to see him about my second hip.

ok i'll definitely call tomorrow . Do you remember any of the names of the nurses there? I haven't worked there in 10 yrs

I’m so bad with names - I relied on the white board in the room. I do remember some of the nurses saying they have been working there a long time, esp. the night nurse who said she loves her shift.
The early evening nurse was one of my favorites - she was petite with very short blonde hair.

And remember, I was on pain medication - at least that’s my excuse for not remembering names!

Lol understandable. I'm horrible with names also. I can remember a face for years though. lol..

Please let me know if you make an appointment with Irving. I’d like to know how long it takes to get an appointment - it may make me stop procrastinating and just call his office.
