@brooklyn 1st let me say congrats on making it through. I had mine done on Dec 31st and I am still rehabbing it but I had a lot of pre existing complications.. Still let me encourage you that it is worth it. I hope your recovery is fast and as pain free as possible. The ice suggestions were great but keep in mind that icing doesn't just apply at the hospital. Ice is a great pain reliever 5 months down the road. Always remember this is a great sight for advice but it is also a great place to vent when times gets hard. My prayers are with you and anything you need anything just let us know.

Well I went to Pt. They said I am doing good. Of course I told them about my leg and she said as my muscle get stronger it should fix itself. My operated leg is a centimeter longer than the other one. Of course I was upset but she said it is ok. I am trying to be positive. I start tuesday on aquatic therapy. I have two aquatic and one land everyweek for six weeks. My scar is good she said. I have to rub it everyday to break up the scar tissue. Pain wise I am good. I have practically none!!!!! only if I move my leg a certain way will i get a tinge. Do have alot of nausea though. Been taking ginger root for that. Sleep well that still stinks. Napping during the day is none. I will get tired but cant fall asleep. At nite well that is sucky too. It seems I sleep every other nite or so. I cannot fall asleep probably before 1am. What the heck is that!!! I use to go to bed by 10. When I do sleep it is only for a few hours. I can sleep on my side and stuff but sleep isnt not in cards even though I am exhausted. I will lay there and watch TV. I would just love to go back to my old schedule and sleep like I did before all of this back and surgery thing. I do get tired quickly. I know that is normal. Hip is still swollen. Tired on pants on an had a hard time pulling them up. LOL. Other than that I am OK. But if anyone has any tips on the sleeping please let me know. Sleeping pills do not agree with me. Tired the Advil PM. Worked for a while and really dont work anymore. Melotonin does not work for me.

@brooklyn The whole sleep thing is normal but there are a few home remedies that work. For some people pain medicine hypes them up rather than knocks them out. I happen to be one of those people. I too have tried Ambien, Trazadone, Melatonin, Valerin root, Lunesta, Muscle relaxers and a host of other things. One of the issues I have with sleeping is I used to work 12-15 hours a day so sleep came pretty natural. Now I am just sitting around. Currently I am taking Klonopin, Trazadone, and drinking Chamomille tea with honey at bed time. Some nights it works like a charm others not so well. I have just learned to adapt and sleep when I can at night but always stay awake during the day.

@jospehine & @Poppet the two best moderators have some good info on sleeping. I hope things get better.

I don't have any miracle cures for sleeping, but I can tell you that for me it just took time. At about six weeks post op I finally started sleeping through the night on a regular basis. My main problem is falling asleep. Once I get there, I can now sleep 8 hours in a stretch. Problem is when I finally fall asleep at 1 am, I want to sleep til 9!

Well last nite I took 1 advil PM and 2 Melitonin and I must have feel asleep. Woke up a couple of times to go to the bathroom and slept till 9:30am. I am still tired. I want to lay in bed all day and do nothing that is how tired I am. I do need to do things. I will try this combo tonite and see if it works again. Only thing is that I need to get to sleep before 1am. I do not know why that is my witching hour.

What a lot of people don't know is that all the PM medicines are called that because they have Benadryl in them. The original name for it is Diphenhydramine. Benadryl is a 1st generation antihistamine which often leaves people groggy the next day. I call it the Benadryl hangover. Phenegran will do the same thing. Melatonin is a great natural supplement if it doesn't work by itself I would try and combine it with some Valerian root. I often find that Chamomile Tea mixed with peppermint tea with a teaspoon of local honey helps sleep. It is not something that will knock you out but I also use it on days that I feel stressed out. Both of these teas are caffeine free so there is no stimulant in it. You can pick them up at Walmart for .99 cents a box. I am glad you got some sleep last night and I pray you continue to. Just remember this is not a sprint it's a marathon. Get better soon.

Thank you medic4355. I have everything in the house but the peppermint tea. I will try that next. Didnt try the melatonin and valerian root either. I found something that CVS carries Somnapure PM. Tried last nite. Did not work. Think I am desperate!!!!!!! :) I do notice that now since starting PT outside the house my back is bothering a bit. That has not happened since the operation. That has me concerned. I do toss and turn all nite and I am hoping it is from all the moving I am doing during the nite and it might be aggravating the hip. Tonite I will try the teas. Thanks

Well I have been trying to go without the pain pills all day and nite. I do not think it is working. The last few nites I notice I need to get up and take the pain pill. I think I do fall asleep after that. Before that I toss and turn and move my legs and change the pillow inbetween my legs all around. It is terrible. The think that is upsetting me besides the sleep is now my back is again hurting me. It wasnt hurting me for weeks after the operation but then I was not tossing and turning my body around in the bed. Is this normal for my back to hurt. Am I doing something to my hip to make it hurt.
Thanks

@brooklyn , some other things to try: Magnesium, l-tryptophan (try 1 gram and if that doesn't work then 2 grams/2000 milligrams), l-theanine. Taking l-trypto with a little carb makes it work better. So a piece of banana or a small cookie might

Hi everyone. I am doing better. I am starting to sleep. Now like I did before but at least a few hours. I am at 6 weeks. I am still using the cane. Not all the time but I know I walk much better with it. I do notice when I get tired I will start limping worse. I am going to physical therapy 3X a week. Two times in water and once on land (as they put it). My hip doesnt hurt me at all. I am very careful though. I try not to bend for anything. I bought a bunch of those sticks that pick up things. Now I do find myself sleeping on my right side. I dont start there but I find myself there. Now I do notice my back will hurt at times. Didnt for weeks in the beginning after my surgery but now it does. Not like before of course but does hurt. I am not sure why. Infact I am getting a bit upset. Is it normal. I sometimes think it is from the way I sleep. I do find myself in weird positions. And I also thing I do go past the 90 degree mark with my knees bent when I am sleeping. Does anyone have any idea on this. I go back to the doc on July 29. Not taking any pain meds other than advil. That is only 1X a day. Also my PT said my leg is a centermeiter longer than the other one. Which does upset me. Is that why I might still have a limp? I am not very adventurious with my new hip so I cannot say I do much. I am very careful. I do go out shopping and try to do stuff around the house. I do get tired pretty quick and have to rest.

@brooklyn, I am three weeks out of surgery, and also wake up at night in pain, take a Hydro, and can go back to sleep. Do you recall how long you stayed on pain pills? I need to refill mine shortly, but if I am supposed to be off pain medication, I guess I won't? I can't imagine that though.

LoyalD - I stayed on them for about 4 weeks. I took them about 1 or twice a day. From what I hear you really need to be taking them for a while. My pain was greatly reduced after the surgery. Also, I think they were contributing to me not sleeping and that alone encouraged me not to take them.

One of the biggest problems when we can't sleep is that we get anxious and worried that we're not sleeping... and then we CAN'T sleep. One of the things that helped me pre- and post- surgery was to simply give myself permission to NOT sleep. That is - I would get as comfortable as I could in bed, lights out, and just lay there and thing pleasant things (not my worry list, not my I wish I could do it list...). More times than not, I would eventually drift off.
I'm 9 weeks post-op and can usually get to sleep. I still have days when if I sit still more than 10 minutes, I'm ready to sleep. I've also become a great fan of naps and often I'll start out by reading, then realize that I'm not really seeing the pages and put the book aside and close my eyes.

We will get through this - just be patient and kind to yourself

NMijrhus--Thank you. I try also to give myself permission not to sleep also and I usually do fall out at sometime. I do get extremely tired in the afternoon. But again I just lay there and really dont sleep.

I know this may sound silly brooklyn but do you put a pillow between your legs when trying to sleep as this will help cushion the weight bearing [ hopefully ] and help give you a better sleep.
You will need some form of meds to help with the recovry pain, make sure you ice your leg as this will help bring down the swelling at least three times a day.

Forbesy-Yes I do put a pillow LOL Been doing it from day one. I really am not in much pain at all. The pain I have advil takes care of. Icing now that I do not do much!!!!!
