Day 6. The big news today is that I finally was able to "go"! :happydance: seems I've had to work harder at this than any other aspect of my recovery so far!

I'm not feeling much pain at all; just a bit of stiffness when first starting to move. Staying on a strict schedule of pain meds really seems to be doing the trick. The PT gave me a few more exercises to do, and I'm able to do them without much difficulty, except for the standing abduction. After about 4 or 5, I begin to feel some cramping in the right hip. S I'll just take it slowly on that one.

That's all the news for today...

Has anyone in the US run into (and successfully dealt with) difficulty with disability insurance not covering your full recovery time? I'm on short term disability since the day of my surgery. My OS approved my return to work for January 6 (8 weeks pot op), however, the disability insurance company is allowing coverage for only 4 weeks (saying that I should have returned to work on December 4). That seems incredible to me that they would expect a patient who has undergone and recovering from a THR and jis on pain meds to return to work.

I intend to challenge this, but would love to hear from anyone who has had any experience in this area.

Thanks so much (and Merry Christmas to my fellow hippies!).

Even 8 weeks is pretty aggressive for a return to work. I hope you can fight this!

Gosh hope you manage to sort that out....how on earth could you return to work in 4 weeks...8 seems a short time... Sorry in UK so no help at all!! Do hope they extend it for you.... Chrissie xxx

Mine has approved me for the "standard" 6 weeks which is at full pay, but if I have to be out longer it drops to 75%. I haven't had my bilateral yet so we will have to see. Yes I would appeal and have your Dr document why you can't return yet.

Karen, how frustrating! Start by going through your disability policy word by word and looking for anything that may help you. Does it specifically state how they determine the amount of time they will allow? Is there an appeals process built in, or do you just call and throw yourself on their mercy? Do you work someplace large enough to have an HR person who can help go to bat for you? Have you called them and talked to a real person, and gotten any explanation as to how they arrived at 4 weeks instead of your doctor's 8 weeks? Find out what kind of documentation they require for a successful appeal and start gathering it.

I agree with Jaycey...even 8 weeks is pretty minimal. Keep us posted.

Good news to report! I've been approved for the full 8 weeks' leave! After several conversations with my OS office and with the insurance company, and the OS dealing with insurance, they approved my leave!,

Thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement!

Wishing you all a very happy, prosperous and pain-free New Year! Special thanks to all the hippies here on BoneSmart for the information, knowledge and encouragement. Your support eased my mind and gave me the confidence to get a THR. I can confidently say it was the best thing I've ever done!

Happy (Hippy) New Year!!!

Karen
