TKR Bethsail’s LTKR Journey January 10, 2018

I got them from Ames Walker www.ameswalker.com. The pricing is reasonable but shipping is slow. Make sure you know your size because they only allow exchanges once you open the package.

Hmmmmmm.... Do the white ones feel worse than the nude ones??? Asking for a friend... :)
Yes as a matter of fact they do :)

Another Milestone: Walked outside today without a cane! Still had it in the car, and used it st the next stop but was good. Happy Sunday everyone!

Yay, another big step made without that cane!

I’m still using it for longer walks, etc. but short distances etc., I still have a limp. It’s also in the car with me in case I need it.

The new knee is strong enough for uneven surfaces:).

It’s 60 degrees here. Going to take the dog for a walk:)

This is the beginning of the life circle starting to get wider, not shrink as it did with OA!

Tylenol Question: I am finally off the pain meds and I’m just taking Tylenol now.

What do you find the most beneficial doses etc. I’m not supposed to take more than 3000 mg a day so I don’t know whether I should take the eight hour arthritis pain or the fast acting gelcaps? Or a mix? Please share what has worked for you. I’m also on Celebrex 200 mg daily and 900 mg gabapentin (starting to tamper off that this week)

I took three doses a day: 6 am (early riser), 2 pm, and 9-10 pm before going to bed (if needed). I often skipped the night dose if I thought I could get to sleep without it. It wasn't very long before I only took two doses a day: 6 am and mid-afternoon. I used tablets and always ate a little something with it.

The 3,000 mg restriction is recommended, to allow for any Tylenol (Acetaminophen) that may be in any other medications you are taking. As long as you check your other medications and include the amount of Tylenol in them into your calculations, you can safely take up to 4,000 mg per day.

We usually recommend taking 1,000 mg (2 x 500 mg) 4-6 hourly, spreading the 4 doses over 24 hours.

It sounds like your recovery is going so well- very encouraging to me. My leg is still not straightening very well and I'm getting bummed. My 6 wk checkup is fri. I do a lot of walking and normal to less than normal amount of housework-- I feel like I'm moving well, it's just that messed up extension

I feel like I'm moving well, it's just that messed up extension
It's only about 6 weeks since your surgery and your extension can continue to improve for at least a year, so there's no need to be concerned. Your extension isn't messed up. It will come, - just give it time.

Thank you all! So do you recommend 8 hr arthritis or the 4 hour liquid gels?

So it’s 7½ weeks and I went back to work today. New office job. 1+ hr commute. Knee did well. Went up and down three flights of stairs step over step. Kept up with everyone (with a little effort!). Did get sore towards the end of the day. Iced to and from work. Sitting with leg down for any amount of time still = bad. Have to be mindful to keep it elevated. This office has refrigerators and freezers so I will be able to keep things frozen so I will have ice packs through the day. Am tired though!!

Wow, for less than 2 months you are doing fantastic! It sounds like your knee is handling itself really well, and you know how to take care of it. Having ice available at work is a huge plus.

It makes a popping sound when I flex it up and down. When rotating sideways it makes a noise and I can feel it pop. Sometimes going down stairs it almost buckles.

I’m a very active person and have returned to as much activity as I can. My PT, in months 3&4, told me that was part of the healing process. She said it takes a year before all that stops. I’ve had a textbook recovery otherwise. Others have told me that this is how these knees are.

I’m three months away from knee #2 and while the other one is bad, this is not what I expected.

Appreciate any comments to level set my expectations, or suggested next steps? I’m seeing the surgeon again this Friday.

I’m not as far along as you and don’t have any answers for you but you might tag Josephine, the forum director, to see if she has any suggestions. To tag someone, just put the @ symbol in front of their name with no spaces between @ and the name.

My knee has already gone through various stages of clicking and clacking and I’m just now 12 weeks out. My best guess from all my research is that there’s a tendon that hasn’t quite settled into its new spot and it’s getting hung on the implant. It will click for a week or so, then stop for a few days, then start back ... annoying, but not really worrisome right now.

Your issue could be something else entirely, especially when coupled with the feeling it’s about to buckle.

Don't expect your second knee replacement to be exactly like your current one. Even with the same person and the same surgeon, the recoveries can be very different. Try not to compare them.

Thanks. I knew it would not be exactly like my old knee repaired— but I’m a scale of 1-10 , I was. 3 before surgery and I’m a 5 now. I can’t step up or down 12” without a stabilizer—something to hold on to. Would really appreciate chime ins from those with a lot of experience such as @Josephine. Thank you!

I still have popping noise and my tkr was over 2 years ago. I can actually make it pop on demand! It doesn't hurt, but I can feel it.

@josephine— checking to see if many people after 6 months of healing still have the popping, sometimes instability when I’m rotating or twisting it— such as turning while in a stair. I seem to still need to stabilize myself. Thanks!

I didn't have instability but did have clicking for about a year. Even now once in a while I will get a (painless) click.
My knee was very sensitive to "tweaks" for the first 6 months or more.

So I just got back from MD— they took a full set of X-rays. Implant looks good. It’s IT band tightening and need to strengthen quads. He said 12-18 months before its all set and I need to do quad work. So off to the pool:)
