Back again for RTHR - Mako robotic THR anyone?

Thanks, Opie. I really thought I'd be relaxed with this second one, but I'm not. I find myself watching how I do everything and thinking how I will do it post surgery.

@Itzdor I too will be basically alone. My husband sees me as a burden and watched me struggle daily so I'm thinking I may stay at our sons and his wife temporarily. I've talked to a couple people that live alone and we're on their own and we're discharged on day 3. They both gave me good advice to have meals prepared ahead so it's just unthaw and heat and gave simple snacks ready to go. And have a bag on Your Walker to carry things. To go cups for your water and coffee so you can throw it all in the bag. I'm not sure about the bed right away. I think PT will have lots of tips and If you go to a joint clinic too.

cpollock, I'm sorry you are not able to get the support you should at home. You might consider rehab if your insurance will permit it and then go on to your son's? I will go there to rehab from the hospital for as long as they can keep me. Thanks for the tips.

@Itzdor how are you doing? I went to my 2 week follow up and thought I would update you. I keep comparing my RTHR 8 years ago:
•showering since day 3
•took bandage off, doc said incision was pristine
•very little bruising or swelling
•no more PT just walking
•started using cane today
•sleeping on back and non surgery side with pillow between legs
•preparing simple meals, laundry, tidying up

I was no where near this level of recovery last time. I still rest a lot, ice and take a regular schedule of pain meds. I plan to start the BoneSmart weaning in a few days.
Please let me know how you are doing and if you have questions. By 2 weeks post op you will be totally independent, except possibly driving. My dr. Said no narcotics, and practice my reaction time in a parking lot before I drive. Hope this helps.

You sound like you're doing so well, yeah! So you are just at 15 days. I remember a lot of pain at that time. How is yours? The pain meds and I didn't really get along, one of them gave me the itchies and the other one made me see things. My drug of choice was ibuprofen and that served me well, as I remember.

I was driving at day 18 because it was my left hip, I was off pain killers and my car was an automatic. This time I'm concerned because it's my right hip and my car is a VW Beetle so might be challenging to get in/out of.

The anesthesia department call today to set up a preop appointment. The nurse said they will be doing a spinal with something else. I won't be awake. That I could not do.

I am nervous and really dreading it. The hardest part is having to set up care for my dog. I hate having to kennel him for three weeks or more. I'm hoping I can come home after rehab instead of going to my daughters. So much is up in the air and I'd really like to have my ducks in a row. I'm used to doing everything on my own, so having to be dependent on anyone else it's very frustrating. I'm not good at asking anyone to do anything for me.

I don't remember, did you go to rehab or did you go directly home?

Thank you for thinking of me and I'm happy to hear that things are going so well for you. Please keep me posted. You are a good example for me. Good night and sweet dreams.

I understand, however I have my husband who really did a great job helping me. I stayed at the hospital 2 nights. I would have went to rehab had I not had my husband. I really can't emphasize enough how much better this THR went compared to my last one 8 years ago. I really felt much better at about 8-10 days. How long can you stay in rehab? By 2 weeks I was doing quite well. I don't have dogs anymore, but can relate to how hard it would be to kennel them. not being able to bend over really makes it hard to care for them. Keep in touch.

Opie, thanks for your reply and my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I've become a big procrastinator as I vacillate about everything and let my thoughts about this surgery fill my mind. The plan is for me to be in the hospital three days and then go to rehab for as long as they will keep me. Last time I was there eight days. I'm hoping by the end of that time I can come home. If I can't I will go to my daughters.

It's comforting to hear that your experience this time has been easier than the last. I am hoping for the same results. I have gone for my pre-op physical, my chest x-ray came back normal and next week I get to see the surgeon before my surgery on March 20. It is still a little unsettling when the hospital and the rehab want to know if I have a living will and health care proxy and what funeral home I want to use (only the rehab asked me that one.) Yes, I have all those things in place, just hoping I don't have to use them anytime soon.

Each day if I have no discomfort, I am mediately think, " I really should cancel my surgery ." But I keep forcing myself to realize that that would not be a wise decision.

I hope your recovery is continuing to go smoothly and I do our dancing on the tables by now. I promise to let you know my outcome. Thanks so much for your concern and words of encouragement.

It's natural to be nervous. I was more nervous before my second THR. But recovery from that op was much easier. Do not cancel - you need to get this done and get on with living. You've got this @Itzdor !

Okay...my surgery is Monday and I am now officially crazed. I am full of doubt and anxiety. I have to be at the hospital by 5:45 AM which is practically the middle of the night as far as I am concerned. I have really had no hip pain at all lately so I'm doubting myself and my decision to have the surgery.

I took my dog to the kennel on Friday because we were threatened with the snow today and it never happened. My house is quiet and empty and I am missing my shadow. Because it's just the two of us, we are bonded at the hip so I am lost without his sweet face.

My mind is going to places that fill me up with worry and dread. Please hold good thoughts for me. Many thanks. I will let you know how it all goes.

Hi @Itzdor ,

Really sympathise with you feeling this way before your op. I also had doubts due to intermittent pain, and felt truly terrified at the prospect of the surgery. Happily, I can honestly say it was much less worse than I was anticipating. Yes, the first few days are difficult, but I did not really experience terrible pain. Mobility increases gradually, and I felt that after 2wks, I really turned a corner and started to feel much brighter and more positive. I am now 3.5 wks out and can look after myself and walk about 20 mins a day with 2 crutches. While your dog's company would give you a lot of comfort, there is no way that I could walk a dog in the immediate future. Think you may need help with that for an extended period.

Keep yourself busy today and pack early so you can try to relax and have an early night tonight. Will be thinking of you tomorrow and hoping everything goes smoothly with your surgery and recovery.

Best wishes,
Diane

You will be fine @Itzdor ! This is the worst part of the journey. It's good you will be going in early. Done and having lunch by midday.

We are with you on this!

It will be fine. The worry before is much the worst. I too have a dog and had to put him in kennels for first week just so I didn't fall over him etc! Bouncy 1yr old lab! Then got him home and have a dog walker and friends helping out. Am told I will be able to start walking him again at 6 weeks and I can't wait.
Don't worry. Early morning much the best. I had to wait until 5pm and it was horrible waiting.
Take care, good luck. All will be fine.
Sam x

@Itzdor The run up to thr is the worst part. It's such a build up; so much planning, prepping and wondering goes into every surgery. Your dog is in good hands and will be very excited to see you. By this time tomorrow you'll be done and dusted -and without the joint pain :)

I just found your thread. Just wanted to let you know that I had bilateral surgery, and was able to care for my large dogs six nights later. I stayed in the hospital three nights, (but could have come home after two.) My dad stayed with me at home for two more nights, we picked up my dogs, and then I was on my own. They really sensed that I had something very wrong, and they were gentle and well behaved. I had been so worried that they would knock me over or get forceful. They were very mellow. I can't remember when I started walking them. Animals are so in tune. I think you'll be fine.

The Bonesmart mantras really helped me. I think I started driving after three weeks. I used Dial A Ride until then...it was great. They pick you up and have an elevator for your walker.

Hip hip Horst,my goal is to get home to my Ben as quickly as possible.i am hoping m boy will be as conciderate as your two are.

I have read several articles in the news lately about the dangers of Ibuprofen and find them most concerning. My surgery was in March and since going off opioids I have been on large doses of Tylenol and Ibuprophen throughout the day. I need Josephine's opinion/advice, please. This is just one of the articles I have read. broken link removed: https://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm453610.htm

We have seen this in the press here in the UK as well. As a person who too NSAIDs for years and last year suddenly had a major heart issue I still wonder if the medication was partially to blame. In any case, I would discuss this with your family doctor

I'll tag @Josephine for you but she has just had shoulder surgery herself and it may be awhile before she responds.

Thank you, Jacey. I have stopped taking it and am just using Tylenol and Tumeric. It has always been my preference for a headache or any other aches and pains and during my last hip replacement. i will discuss with my doctor when I see him. I will be at eight weeks on Monday and see him again the following week.

I'm sorry to hear about your heart issue and hope all is better now,
