Anxious and a more than a little fearful

@cpollock , I was advised to stop all supplements including herbal ones 10-14 days before surgery and only resumed them after a couple of weeks with permission. Ask your OS, there are some you can take like calcium but I didn't want to take a chance of mixing anything with these powerful meds. I could take Tylenol however.

@cpollock - Jul 31st seems so far off. Hard to believe you can't get it scheduled sooner and get rid of the pain. When I decided I was ready for my 1st THR I got it in 3 weeks. When I was ready for my 2nd THR it only took 2 weeks so it's hard for me to grasp such a long delay.

As for medications to stop taking pre-op, you should be scheduled for pre-admission testing at which time they will go over all your meds and tell you exactly what to stop.

Good luck!

This site is so wonderful. It was wonderful to read that the even the pool exercise seem to help while you were doing it, but afterwards the stiffness and pain returned. I thought that I was imagining that. It is so hard when because I am use to being active. Well, this site gives hopes and helps me to keep from getting depressed. I have a 2 year old great granddaughter who ever time I look at her I feel optimistic and motivated

@Clipper. Thank you for your input. My pain got quite bad last spring and continued so I got my gp to order an x-ray. That was June then I went to him for the results and was referred to the surgeon. Within a year it had progressed to early severe bone on bone. It feels worse now since last summer. It was September 12th when I got into the orthopaedic surgeon. He highly recommended thr and I was booked in for July 31st. That's how many are ahead of me. And he can only do so many a week depending on the operating room availability. I'm on a cancellation list but no word. I do a little around the house then rest then do a little more. That seems to be manageable rather than pushing through. I've also stopped most exercising other than simple ones like ankle pumps and heel slides. Anyone believe the weather is a factor in pain levels? 4 1/2 months to go now.....

I noticed my bad hip would hurt worse in cold weather. Damp was also a factor. I guess it's all a part of arthritis. Hang in there! Spring is coming and so is your new hip.

@cpollock - Your timeline is WAY different than mine and I sympathize that you have to endure worsening hip pain for such a long time. Waiting that long must be really tough.

I saw my GP on 3/8/16 and he sent me for ex-rays that same day. He scheduled my OS for a consultation on 3/12/16. The OS scheduled me for LTHR (anterior) on 4/4/16. That's less than 4 weeks from diagnosis (OA) to having a new hip. He offered to replace my other hip at 8 weeks but I waited until November (7 months) so I could build up more strength and be convinced I wanted the 2nd hip replaced. I scheduled another office visit with the same OS (they do their own x-rays) and after that visit I had a new 2nd hip in 2 weeks. As much as I worry I would have gone MAD having to wait a year.

I would like to know why some time lines are so much longer. This is not the 1st case that has surprised me. There are some major differences in experiences and I'm curious as to why.

It's all about capacity. The health systems are over stretched and what is consider "elective" surgery has a wait. For those of us who had to or are enduring pre-op pain - nothing seems "elective". Money or insurance really doesn't get you anywhere in the UK or Canadian system.

@Clipper if I had money I could cross the canadian border and go to Montana and have it done. Its around 10 grande us money and I'd probably have to stay around there til I was ready for a 6 hour drive home. Then if you had issues you'd have to trek back for follow up care. I will endure. I've researched my surgeon and have talked to a lady that had him and he's great. It is our health care system for the wait, not the surgeons fault.i have to be careful now on how much I do, I know that now and go easy on exercising.

Adding my 2 cents :) So sorry you are having to wait so long. That happens with universal health care but at least all people are taken care of, not like here in the U.S. Where SOO many people cannot get the care they need. Does not help you in the moment, I know :/

I absolutely DO feel the weather makes a difference. Right now it is snowing out, a late season snowstorm and my knee is killing me (hip replacement coming on 30th), so as you see my knee has been affected, like yours, because of how I am walking due to hip pain. The closer I get to surgery, the worse the pain gets, so I did get a script for tramadol but usually just take it when I go to bed because Tylenol just does not cut it at night. This, at least, enables me to get a better night sleep which is really important for how I feel during the day.

I found "dry needling" to be very helpful with my pain pre surgery I am not sure if your Physical Therapists do this in Canada. I tried it one other time with no results, but this time is has really really helped with my pain.

@Thereandnow thank you for your comments and thoughts. I no longer go to physio. I was told they could no longer help me and showed me a couple stretches to do daily. And forget it, they cause too much pain while trying to do them and after. Dry needling??? Is that acupuncture? 140 days to go.......

They are as thin as acupuncture needles but longer and go down into muscle to get a release. Sounds worse than it is. Just a little uncomfortable, but the next day ahh, relief. I only have a couple weeks to go, you poor thing. Yes, if it hurts from PT, no sense doing it. Chiropractor and massage has helped me too. Chiro helps my back from all the limping. It takes a darn village just to keep functioning at a low level at this point lol.
