THR acetabular cup problems

Deep tissue massage is great. It hurt like you know what when it is being done but then eases. I had several weeks of these treatments post LTHR. Really works!

Well, I missed out on some good stuff apparently! Wish I would've been certified for that.
Hope you have a super weekend and all continues to get better and better!

Two of the best things I learned from my physiotherapist was stretches for my psoas and how to get relief from sacroiliitis by doing pelvic tilts. I pelvic tilt all over the place - before I get out of bed in the morning, before I get up off a chair, while at a stop light, while standing. The first thing I asked the surgeon after my hip replacement was if I could do pelvic tilts and he said to go for it. I hope you find relief.

@allj So glad you're getting some ease. Piriform is rotten - have it myself. Might ask for the deep massage! Is that your place on the photo? It looks amazing. Am looking forward to spring and better weather as well. Can't wait to get some heat back! LOL. You seem a very positive person and that helps with any recovery. We just have to be patient - not that I have much with myself. I expect to be doing something especially outside! Keep going you will get there. Cheers Carol

Hi again. I wish I didn't have to post again but need some support and guidance.

I'm 6 months into anterior hip replacement recovery. I had/have lots of difficulty with recovery - bursa, SI joint, psoas. I'm not a slouch and did my PT (16 times). I finally went to the gym to exercise more and my leg is getting stronger and feel better that day.

I noticed I couldn't rotate my leg out so started doing pigeons and have more flexibility but still have some stiffness. But my main problem is the biting, pinching pain in my buttock. Sometimes it's mild in the morning but always worse later in the day. Sometimes it's biting when I awake.

I thought maybe the piriformis is the problem so thought the pigeons would help but still have significant pain in the butt. I'm just taking it easy now and not sure what to do. 6 months with lots of pain is getting hard. Any suggestions or guidance is appreciated.

Hi @allj
I'm sorry you're still struggling. I noticed you have another recovery thread and @Josephine our Nurse Director posed some questions that you answered back in January. Let's see if she'll weigh in on you current issues and activity level. I've tagged her so please check back in the event she has questions.

Your post above will be merged with your original recovery thread where you can post all questions or updates going forward. Thanks in advance.

I hope you find relief soon!

Hi @allj

You'll notice that I have merged your newest thread with your original recovery thread.
For several reasons, we prefer that you only have one recovery thread:
  • That way, we have all your information in one place. This makes it easier to go back and review your history before providing advice.
  • If you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts and advice others have left for you in the old threads, and some information may be unnecessarily repeated
  • Having only one thread will act as a diary of your progress that you can look back on.
So please post any updates, questions or concerns about your recovery here.
Don't worry that we won't see your question because, between us, the staff read all new posts every day.
If you need an urgent response to a question, just tag a member of staff.

If you prefer a different thread title, just post what you want and we'll get it changed for you.

Here are the instructions on finding your thread, How can I find my threads and posts? . Many members bookmark their thread, so they can find it when they log on.

Did you read the advice that Josephine gave you in your earlier thread - to cut back on exercising? Hips don't need a lot of exercise and the exercise may be responsible for at least some of your pain.

It might also be this:
Piriformis syndrome - a pain in the butt!

My initial problem was with what I thought was my piriformis. After a yr or so (several yrs ago) my leg locked up so I had a difficult time opening my leg. After doing PT and many leg butterflies??(forgot what it's called) lying on my side with a band around my knees I regained some mobility but still couldn't open my leg all the way. Getting out of the car was a problem, etc. The muscles involved with doing pigeons and just sitting cross-legged are still problematic. With those muscles (feels like my glut minimus) being weak, my leg turns in and causes pain?? The new muscle weakness that I never had a problem with is the iliopsoas. Any input on what is going on and what I should do next is appreciated. Is it possible I have a torn muscle or something like this. I was concerned the iliopsoas my have been cut during thr but that's my paranoia speaking. Thanks
Alan

I am 1 yr out from anterior THR and still having significant pain. I'm hoping for some insight and help. Lying prone w one knee bent and raising the other leg for 2 sets of 10 causes significant pain at the upper area. I'm slowly trying to strengthen the muscle and work through the pain but after a few days of this I have to stop. - I'm thinking the rectus femoris or something near there. I also have some iliopsoas pain. I had an injection in the iliopsoas last week. So far it hasn't helped but it's early. Any insight on why and suggestions regarding the femoris would be appreciated. Thanks again this site is invaluable.

Suggest you stop doing this exercise, seems it is irritating your muscles.

I don't like to use resistance bands for exercise on legs.
If you've been doing this for a while it could indeed be causing tendinitis or some muscle strain.
Still possible to overdo at not quite a year out..and over.
I know...I've done it.
I too think you should ease up on that SORT OF PT.
Ice is still nice when you are aching!
Hope all eases soon!:friends:

Hi @allj
Happy Eleven Month Anniversary!
I'm sorry you're still struggling. I'm wondering if you've consulted with your surgeon over your concerns?
Or, if you're scheduled for a one year post op next month when you could discuss all of this?
If not, we could ask Josephine to weigh in if things don't improve after dropping the bands and unnecessary exercise. Just a thought....
Wishing you comfort and healing.

Hi @allj,

Is your pain still in you but, or is it now somewhere else?

Have you had your back x-rated to look for issues with your SI and L3-L5 joints?

Cheers

Thanks for your replies. I am really having a hard time one year out.

I went to my surgeon who said that since I had butt pain before surgery it is likely pain isn't caused by surgery. Further, if an image were done PT would likely be recommended anyway. While my back may be an issue for the butt pain it's the front of my leg that is messed up from the surgery. He ordered an injection for the ilio-psoas. This helped some with the ilio but the top of quadriceps femoris is really causing significant pain. I'm not sure what to do.

MD told me to call him 5 days after the injection. He hasn't called back for 10 days. It seems if I don't do any PT everything gets worse so I do PT only to find it gets a little better before getting worse again. I cut back on PT for the quad by raising my leg 6" off the ground and holding it for 10 secondsx10 (about to go to 5x). I also do a lot of leg stretches and Pidgeon poses.

My biggest fear is that my quad is so messed up it won't heal. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi @allj
I'm sorry you're struggling.
Let's ask the forum Nurse @Josephine to weigh in on your pain.
I've tagged her for you. She resides in the U.K. so there is a time difference.
Please check back on ocassion as she may have questions for you.
Wishing you comfort and a nice weekend!

Sorry you're fixing it rough this far out. I am having a few issues too. Rubbish isn't it? Did you ever get rid of your bursa? Hope you get some relief from your injection into the psoas...

Sunnysept thanks for responding
I've had so many painful issues I can't keep track. Early on my PT therapist thought it was mostly my bursa, SI joint, psoas, pyriformis and my upper quad. My hip was jacked back toward the inside with limited movement. I have been stretching in out doing yoga pigeon poses. The bursa is ok now but the rest still hurts. I'm not sure it's pyriformis as it often hurts more close to the prosthetic. The psoas is less of a problem after the injection. Do injections help with the quadricep formis muscle as well? I'm having more problems walking up stairs lately so I stopped doing PT for now. I only walk about 2 1/2 mi per day. This helps esp with butt pain (endorphins?).
