17 years old and getting a THR

AnneR, my femur was broken during my third replacement, and while it was more painful and took longer to heal, there haven't been long-term issues. It just aches a bit more.

Hi Janey,

I am 27 years old and will be getting a THR in a couple of weeks. I have been in pain for the past few years and it has only gotten worse, to the point where I have a slight limp and can't do lots of normal things without constant pain. I have wanted to put off the surgery too because I felt like I was too young and didn't want to 'deal with it,' But, as I understand and have experienced it, the pain and lack of mobility only gets worse with time. So, it's best to just have the surgery and move on with life doing the things we love without limitations. I know it sounds cliche, but it's important to live in the present and if the present call for surgery, then why not!! :)

Keep us posted and best of luck to you.

This is definitely you, Hopeful7, and nothing beats a positive mental attitude. It will stand you in good stead on your journey from surgery to complete recovery. And one of the really nice things about a THR is that, along with losing the pain and lack of mobility, you are able to forget entirely about your hip as you go through just living you life.

Hi everyone! Thank you for all of the replies, I have been so busy with school work that I haven't had the chance to come on here! But I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm getting my THR in two weeks and will keep everyone updated!

I was wondering how long all the rules have to be followed for? Such as not crossing your legs or sitting so that your knees aren't above your hips?

Thanks again!

Hi, Janey96. So glad you are going ahead. You'll be so glad you've had this done and can go on and have all the fun a young person should have without the pain.

You should ask your surgeon about how long the restrictions last; it varies from surgeon to surgeon and from person to person. Are you having the anterior or posterior approach?

Stick with us on this forum and we'll support and help you the whole way through your journey!

Peace and love to you.

@janey96 , Butterfly is right, restrictions vary from surgeon to surgeon. I was on restrictions for 6 weeks - pretty average from what we see here on the forum. Don't worry they are very easy to follow. I found my hip just didn't want to move outside the restrictions at first.

Hi @janey96 I thought I was young.....lol.

I think you have made the right decision....my thinking was I could live in pain or fix it....after all you don't even know if you'll be around until your 80....so live for today!!!!

I'll look forward to following your recovery and new life

Janey96 - I'm old enough to be you grandma but I think the surgery is even more meaningful at your age than mine. It was limiting my life but I don't have as much in front of me as you do. My OS says that rarely do people REQUIRE a hip replacement, that it's a usually decision you need to make - put up with it or do surgery. It's your decision. And it finally comes to the point where you know it's right for you. I don't mean with no doubts, I had plenty of those. Truth is, some days I still worry if it was right but if I had to go through it again, I know I can now. And at six weeks I can see how much better life looks and improving every week.

Young people can be impatient - ok, us old ones are too. Take time for your recovery, be good to yourself - a few weeks out if the years ahead of you is nothing in exchange for a good functioning hip!

Hi everyone,
I had my hip replacement 9 days ago and I feel great. I'm so glad that I decided to go ahead with the operation. I was wondering when I would be able to bend my hip normally after the six weeks of precautions?

Wow this was the article for me. I also had AVN but i had to get Arthrodesis which is a fusion of the femur and pelvis<<<<<< my Xray. Im very nervous but after reading all thees testominals from people my age. My date is March 5, 2014!!!! Zimmer Prosthesis. Anyone have any experience arthrodesis conversion to THR ?

Hi @janey96 - just read your thread and am so pleased you have had the THR and are on the road to recovery! You have so much living to do and I hope your recovery goes sensationally!!!!
I would refer back to your surgeon for time limits after all - he is the one who has done all the work:)

Glad it went well @janey96 . I agree with Bill @fulafoto that you should check with your OS re restrictions.

But to give you some idea, I was allowed to go back to normal driving and bending and sitting at 6 weeks and back to normal duties as I felt I could. Tiredness was my biggest problem.

Keep us updated with your recovery
