Thanks for checking in @Layla! I can't believe it's already been well over 4 months since my surgery! It's been a crazy couple of months, and I definitely have a couple way overdue updates.
Right around the 6 week post-op mark, my progress suddenly seemed to just speed up exponentially. I went...
Hey @Wyn wombat - sending you energy and good vibes for your surgery tomorrow (or in just a couple hours, your time!)!
I’m sure you’ve had more nerves, and they’ll still be there as you get to the hospital, but I’m so glad that the nurse and physio were a big help! All of the waiting is really...
Hey @Wyn wombat, I was told by my surgeon to expect between 2-4 nights in the hospital, depending on now the procedure went. I ended up staying for 3 nights, as I also ended up needing a blood transfusion on the second day. But after the transfusion I felt much better and was able to be...
Thanks all, and sorry for the slow reply!
@Ric A - Thanks for the advice! I've been using heat packs more than ice at this point, now that most of the swelling has gone down, though it’s hard to know which to use sometimes! My PT has been doing some massage & manipulation, but a full on...
Hey @Mojo333 - thanks for checking in! I'm doing pretty well overall. I’ve been taking some time to just relax and recover, since I think I was just getting so overwhelmed by everything during the first few weeks.
I've been walking a ton, still sometimes with a walker and sometimes without, but...
Wow thank you all so much for the messages and support!! Reading through your similar experiences and advice on how to get through this time has been so helpful. Even as someone who likes to think of herself as a “positive realist,” I think I still hadn’t fully felt the impact of these big life...
And of course, after writing all about the positives in my last update, I had a bit of a meltdown last night. I've just been trying so hard to focus on the positive, but got irrationally upset at being stuck downstairs yesterday. I’m just so reliant on my partner and housemate for everything...
Thanks @SCee. I'm definitely not the most patient person ever, either—which is not the best characteristic for a long recovery! Glad to hear that it's getting better for you! And I’m sure you’re right about the knee-hip connection.
Exciting news - I made it up and down the stairs - twice! First time was on Thursday, and then I went up again yesterday. And even more exciting was the fact that I was able to cook my own food as well! Being stuck downstairs has made me very dependent on my partner, and while I'm so grateful to...
Hi @Lester.Frea! Glad to hear that your surgeon thinks things are going well. I’m a fellow on-the-younger-side hippie as well - and just had a bilateral THR on April 2. I read through some of your pre-op thread, and it sounds like you’ve been through a lot! So happy that you finally took the...
Thanks @Jaycey - my gait actually seems to be coming along just fine so far (*knocks on wood*). My PT and I have been doing a whole lot of heel/toe walking, and he’s recommended that I just continue with wearing my knee braces to help make sure that they don’t collapse as much.
Was mostly...
@Dmcfad2 post-surgery constipation is the worst! As cliche as it is, drinking coffee and black tea has really helped me keep the “systems moving.” Hope it clears up soon!
Also question for anyone with both hip and knee problems: how did you protect and strengthen your knees while recovering from a hip replacement?
I have naturally super loose ACLs in both knees, and tore my meniscus in my right knee years ago (arthroscopic surgery to repair in 2013)...
