Wondering if anyone went to a general orthopedic for their THR after PAO (Peri-acetabular Osteotomy) , or if you went to a specialist that was familiar with dysplasia. I'm not far from Chicago, so may start back where I had my PAO's done by Dr. Michael Stover. Any stories are welcome. I'm nervous about just having a small town surgeon tell me he'll take my case. ** I should also add that I still have my 4 PAO pins in both hips **

@PAOTara Welcome to BoneSmart! Any good orthopaedic surgeon who does hip surgery will know about dysplasia. It is very common. Check back with the surgeon who did your original surgery. Looks like he has some good reviews.

OK, I had to google to know what your condition is. I'm guessing you have the pins/screws in your pelvis. My situation was that the femoral crown slipped, or that was the diagnosis, and they pinned the femur. This was done in my teens so the wear was pretty bad in my hips. I went to the big city near me to find an OS I was comfortable with that had seen and done it before. It took some time to find someone I was comfortable with. He did the job and I was well satisfied. I stayed away from the smaller town surgeons and hospitals near me. Just my opinion but it worked well for me and I went back for the 2nd hip that didn't have pins. Turns out it had unforeseen problems and he handled it with no problem. I also was concerned about certain hospitals rate of infection.

I did not have any special considerations besides needing a joint replacement but chose to go to someone who did a lot of them and worked in a hospital (not huge) but was well respected and credentialed for joint replacements with its own area for recovery and great organization for pre and post surgery. My OS also does revisions so I figured that if I ever needed one I could go to someone I was already comfortable with. Of course, the first thing for me was meeting him and seeing if his ratings met my expectations in real life. He was great at answering questions completely and fully and that really made me very comfortable and the rest of the office staff was organized and pleasant.

it's not so much a surgeon who is familiar with dysplasia you need, as an orthopaedic surgeon who is experienced in doing hip replacements. To a skilled surgeon, the screws left from the PAO won't present any problem. He/she will remove them if necessary.
