Nonetheless, I am
going to leave the security of giving myself Lovenox (injection) in just 4 days to switch to 325 mg Enteric coated aspirin. I am ambulatory with the anterior THR
Being ambulatory is by far your best defence. And aspirin is just as good an anti-coagulant as any others.
Are you familiar with something called slippery elm?
I've heard of it but it's not a tree indigenous to the UK.
Do you think I will still get the DVT prevention that I need when switching over to aspirin while on slippery elm?
Not being familiar with this, I couldn't possible offer an opinion.

@Josephine Thank you for your input! I spoke with my nutritionist who said I would be fine taking the slippery elm as well as the aspirin again as long as they are at least 2 hrs apart. I will be taking the injections for duration of 3wks soon enough on next surgery Oct 27th. I was just concerned about GI problems again when taking the aspirin. I will never ever ever be taking Ibuprofen again! Oh and I am doing my best to remain ambulatory!

@bottomshollow I tried to add my name and 2nd surgical date under signature but it would not accept
that information. I see the date is at the end of my posts to others yet I am not yet listed on the October
surgical list of names. That would be for SwimGirl to have a left THR on October 27th, 2016. Thank you!

@BusterBeans Seems like I just did that! Yes, of course Sept. 1st. I am now 3 wks post op and have one
more week until I go back to surgeon for another follow up. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the
incision healed. I pray that you have plenty of help at home and someone to change out those ice packs!
I remember that the most important thing was having those ice packs always refreshed! I know that you
will be very happy with your new hip! I know I am! Will be thinking of you and saying a prayer for Tuesday morning. God Bless!

Thank you so much @Cynthia777. I am now actually closer to 4 weeks out. Just got off my walker last week.
Not progressing as quickly as I would like to, but still doing my exercises as PT recommends. I do think that
I am getting stronger everyday. I spent so much time using my left leg for standing up from low seats that
my right leg quads really got weak. I could even see the size difference between both legs. I was keeping the
weight off the right hip which was painful! Now mentally and physically I must shift my weight to the right leg. I have been accommodating for a very long time! So, I bumped surgery back to Oct. 27th for LTHR to give
myself more time to strengthen right leg. As you know when swelling occurs post op you use the opposite leg
to boost yourself up from the bed, toilet, and lower seats. Need to be ready to use the right leg for the boost!
This is a real good reason to have surgery right away when you are told that you need it! Thanks for checking
in on me! BS friends are so wonderful!

Sorry you aren't progressing as fast as you would like, but am sure you will get there. I definitely have some "muscle memory" from all the years of limping that is going to take a while to get rid of.
Delaying the other surgery is probably a good idea, although I'm sure it's frustrating.

I wanted to do my TKR ASAP, but my home PT strongly encouraged me to wait and get really strong on my hip first and maybe even do some pt to strengthen the knee before having it done. It's hard to wait, I just want it done now! But I will follow your example and try to be patient and give my body what it needs.

Hey swim girl. Just dropping in to say hi. Hope your doing well!
When is your 1 month check? Mine will be Monday.

Sounds like you slowly getting there. I will say that it is tough transitioning back to walking normal. I struggled for about a week or so. Walking on UNEVEN ground actually is what helped me. Made me trust that leg more. Also I think my hip joint was not fully back in place. At one point in knelt down for something and felt a slight POP!! After that all has actually been much better.

Just yesterday I commented to my PT that I was finally getting my arm swing back and walking ALMOST felt normal instead of labored.

Best wishes to you. Hope you continue to grow stronger every day.

Caleb.

@calebj06 Thanks for checking in! I will be seeing the OS on Oct. 10th. In the meantime I was back to
the Physical therapist who evaluated my gait and said that I am progressing well. I finally switched to a
cane last week and decided that I would be back on the walker soon enough after my LTHR on Oct. 27th.
PT gave me new exercises that are killer to do, but will help strengthen the muscles around hip on right leg.

Good luck on your 1 month check up. Sounds like you are doing fantastic! You may want to have your Doc
check the POP that you experienced. It may be normal, but just the same this is why you are going back!
Hope you have a great checkup!

Best wishes to you as well. Funny, I was just wondering how you were doing just today!
Take care and keep up the good work!

SwimGirl

@OUCH! I understand wanting to get surgery all over and done with, however there is a reason why PT
would prefer that you wait. The stronger you are on your hip the better recovery on the knee! Waiting
until the 27th of Oct. was really my choice because I realized that my right leg was not strong enough.
Besides that, the hospital ortho nurse specialist reported that those individuals who have surgery at 5 or 6 weeks right after the previous surgery tend to have more trouble recovering from the anesthesia! The PT said
waiting for 2 months after first surgery was fine, but he said waiting at least 3 months was better. Now they tell me! Oct. surgery already scheduled, but he did say I would be fine. So, hang in there! Time goes so fast
that you won't believe it!

@SwimGirl. Did you get the list of 15 exercises from PT that you're supposed to do 3 times a day? Do you do them? If so, when did you start doing them in ernest? If I do 15 reps of each one, I'm so sore the rest of the day I just want to go to bed. I'm wondering if maybe we're supposed to ease into these exercises?

@BusterBeans Hello! I was wondering how you are doing. I was actually given a booklet preop and told to
do the exercises both pre and postop. Simple ones like leg slides and short arc quads and only 2x day for 20 reps.
Remember what Josephine said about hips practically heal on their own if given half a chance. I was also given
a belt that you can assist operated leg with as you get started since you are somewhat swollen on that leg
which makes it difficult to move. This is the term called log leg which means you don't have the strength yet to lift or move as much as you would like. Don't overdo as it will be a setback for you. Just do the exercises and ease in gradually. If you are so sore that you just want to go to bed then you may be doing too much! Easy does it!

@SwimGirl Hey SG! I am not sure were in Florida you are but wanted to drop a note to say, stay safe! Hopefully, you are not on the East side of the state... :blackcloud:

Hello! @Tweetybrd Ahh! Finally power back on! Yes! I am about 5 miles from the East coast in Florida!
Thank you for thinking of me! We boarded up our windows and were lucky that the storm went offshore
about 20 or 30 miles. We still had lots of wind and rain outside that lasted 10 - 12 hours and we lost power for 36 hours. There were so.........many people who lost power. My thoughts and
prayers are for those who were affected up and down the entire coastline! I especially thought about those
who had just had surgery and needed ice postop because it was in short supply. Hopefully everyone who
just had surgery planned to have all the ice that they needed!

@SwimGirl Oh good, so glad you made it through the storm fairly well. My daughters best friend now lives in Charleston, SC and they stuck it out too. Still didn't have power as of 8ish last night. Hopefully, its back on soon.

@SwimGirl I'm glad to hear you came thru Matthew OK. We live in Cocoa Beach in the winter and were saying a lot of prayers for the people we've met over the years who live there permanently. And prayers were answered for central FL but poor St. Augustine and states to the north. You're right about lack of ice for those needing to ice and it might be difficult to find for a few more days. The only time we ever had to evacuate was Three Mile Island.

Just went to the OS today for the preop visit for part 2 of THR on the left this time. Thinking of @Krista and
@ gertie and wondering if everyone is still on schedule for Oct. 27th. My how the time does pass so quickly.
Didn't I just have the right hip done Sept. 1st? Before you know it then it will be Christmas!
Remember girls we have lots of support here when we come out of our deep sleep......Zzzzzz
