Before I begin I would like to thank BoneSmart and all the members who have shared their stories...reading everyone's stories and journey has been incredible helpful during my own process to find an answers to a very painful THR.
My first hip surgery was in October 2020 to repair my a torn labrum and try and preserve my hip. This surgery worked for a few months and then I tripped running after my son and crack the top of my femoral head off. I had a THR in November 2021 and it went well, weight bearing right after surgery, healing well until a month after my surgery I had to go in for another surgery for a wound debridement. My surgeon at the time said it was because my body rejected the stitches but looking back now and pictures of my THR wound it looks like it got infected...I healed, went to physical therapy and returned to work. I was pain free and had full range of movements in my hip and was physical active. In July 2022 my right hip started hurting really badly...long story short this lead me on a medical goose chase for a diagnosis for my pain. I saw multiple specialist along the West Coast, bone scans, MRIs, nerve tests, injections and hip aspirations (my prosthetic joint continued to fill up with fluid and labs showed elevated WBC count but no organisms would grow in the lab) and even had a psoas tendon release surgery in July 2023 in hopes that it would help my pain. The psoas surgery did not help and my hip joint pain continued to get worse...since the fall I have been unable to sit, bend, squat, drive, lift my right leg, or walk longer then 30 minutes. I am a 41 year active mom so this has been challenging to say the least.
Finally I had a doctor who listened to my pain and that even though the imaging and tests did not show something "clear" was wrong with my hip replacement. He ordered a specialize test for my synovial fluid and finally the lab found a propionibacterium infection. I am now scheduled for a two stage revision surgery with the infected hip replacement removed and an antibiotic space put in on May 22 followed by 6 weeks iv antibiotics, 2-4 weeks no antibiotic treatment and then the new hip replacement surgery. I am no stranger to surgeries and by the end of the summer I will have had 6 surgeries on my hip in 4 years but this treatment plan is intimating to say the least. I was wondering of anyone had any first hand advice and tips to dealing with a two stage revision surgery. What is it like to have the antibiotic hip spacer in for a few weeks and then the new part put in? How limited is movement during this time? What are some of the side effects to the antibiotic treatment? How does the pain compare to a THR?
Any tips, advice, stories would be greatly appreciated!
