I'm on my way to having hip replacement sometime in June and luckily i have my mother at home to help take care of me. I'm starting to prepare my house for when i do get home but i have one major issue-my house is a town home with lots of stairs! My basement does not have a hand rail and no bathroom and my bedroom is on the top floor next to the main bathroom! Any advice or suggestions on how to go about this that would be greatly appreciated!

P.S I love this website!:yahoo:

I would certainly make it a priority to install a handrail on your stairways! You don't want to risk a fall as you go up and down.

Most people create a "nest" in the area where they will spend most of their time. It may be you want to do that on whatever floor has the bathroom. You will be able to go up and down stairs before you leave the hospital. You just won't want to do it a lot for the first few weeks you're home.

I was tought how to climb and descend stairs before I left the hospital. It was not difficult, but Jamie is absolutely right about having good quality handrails installed. I just kept repeating, going up, "good foot... bad foot..." and then on the way down "bad foot... good foot...". Within a couple days I was going up and down extra times for the exercise, while walking around the house with my walker over and over again.

I did make myself a "nest" as well.

Agree with the advice previously given a handrail would be an enormous help if possible. Although we are taught how to manage stairs. I had to smile Hagar, I still sound off in my head the mantra learnt in hospital about going up and down stairs... I think it is ingrained now!

Good luck for June, it will come around quickly :)

Hi, you can go up and down the stairs on crutches but I didn't feel stable at all when I tried it so I agree with the handrail suggestion.

I carried my ' stairs instruction sheet' around with me in my pocket for the first week and also still say the mantra in my head now.

Good luck mzshai and keep us posted

Take care

Ann

Welcome to BoneSmart. I don't know how to tell you about stairs because I don't have any. I do know this be careful. Remember to Rest, Ice, and do pain control if needed. We are here 24 hours a day so if you need to come here to post or just to say Hi. Take care. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:friends:

Hand rails are important for everyday use as well as when you're recovering!!! Many, many accidents happen on the stairs when you least expect it. You can lose your balance, a pet can zip by you, things left on the steps accidentally can cause a trip, your foot can twist or your shoe slip....the list is endless. So please do get a handrail up if at all possible!
