TKR Getting back to hiking and climbing.

Wow it's been a while since I read this thread! I just copied an acquaintance to this thread, as he's a climber who was told he'd never climb again after a TKA. It caused me to read back through it, I'm so grateful for the support and optimism of this thread. I'm now 2.5 ish years out from my...

    TKR Wendy EL's recovery thread

I'm now 2.5 ish years out from my TKA and it has not held me back at all as a climber, biker or skier. I'm not climbing as intensely as I used to (probably more related to Covid than my knee), but I've been on several climbing trips since my surgery and it works just fine. I still struggle...

TKR Getting back to hiking and climbing.

Happy new year to you guys too! Using you both for motivation, I went on my first classic ski last week and had such a good time I decided to do it almost every day on our vacation to Aspen! There was a nice mellow trail and good snow, so it was low risk and I was pleasantly surprised my knee...

    TKR Cycle again?

One more thing, I feel like i need a minimum of 115 flexion to have a normal pedal stroke. I'm sitting around 110 comfortably, and I can get to 125 if I really force it but it doesn't feel great. I end up dropping my toe to make rotations still, so my theory is that I need to have a nice flat...

TKR Getting back to hiking and climbing.

Wow Andy, good for you! Did you end up thinking skiing was a good idea? My family is headed to Colorado after xmas for a ski trip. I was intending to read a book by the fire and hit the climbing gym when everyone got home, but between Andy and Rustic's posts above, I'm talking myself into...

    TKR Cycle again?

I'm 5 months out of a total knee, and my advice to you is be really careful getting back on the bike this early. Mountain biking was my main recreational activity before my knee surgery, and I was so eager to get back to it that I over did it in PT, which resulted in significant hamstring and...

TKR Getting back to hiking and climbing.

Thanks for your continued updates, I don't check this site frequently but I find it reassuring when I do. Your thread always gives me hope that I'll get back to my activities eventually! Congrats on hiking and climbing as much as you do, I can't wait to be there! I'm 4.5 months out from my...

    TKR Wendy EL's recovery thread

Thanks for the reassurance. There seem to be two camps of people in recovery from a total knee, the wait and be patient you'll get there folks (mostly on this forum), and then those who got 120 degrees back within 6 weeks and feel like if you're not working hard you're holding your knee back...

TKR Getting back to hiking and climbing.

I'm a climber too, 12 weeks out from TKR. I have that same wierd pain when I lift my leg to move covers around at night. Yikes, you still have it at 12 months? That scares me! I'm going back to the climbing gym tomorrow for the first time just to belay my friends. Hoping to get on something...

    TKR Wendy EL's recovery thread

Celle sorry for the confusion, my surgery was July 17th. I'm wondering if others can comment on their range of motion. As stated above, I've had significant hamstring and sciatica pain which has limited my range of motion. The sciatica seems to have gone away for the most part, but my...

    TKR Sciatica Pain

I'm now at week 12 and my sciatica has mostly gone away. I tried riding the stationary bike again yesterday and I feel like it's on the verge of flaring up again, ugh. Unfortunately for me I'm a mountain biker and am eager to get back to biking, but I think i'm not quite there yet. Another...

    TKR Wendy EL's recovery thread

Hi all. I had a right TKR on July 17th, so at the time of this writing I am 7 weeks out. I've been healthy and active until last winter, when my bad knee (bad following a ski injury in my late 20's) started to pop in and out of place. We initially thought I tore my meniscus, and I had surgery...

    TKR Sciatica Pain

Hi Karen. I had a right TKR on July 15th, so we're on the same timeline and like you I also am experiencing sciatica. It has been very painful from weeks 4-6, but last week I had a massage and for the first time I had 2 days of relief. It's back again, I think I caused it by riding the...
