Thanks everyone, I'll try the suggestions here and (hopefully) report back with stories of a decent nights sleep. Cheers!

THR THR was 2/1 - Scared, left alone, and in pain

Wow, thats a terrible place to be, especially after what I'm sure were nothing but optimistic thoughts leading up to the surgery. I completely agree with Jaycey, your pain meds should be helping you through this phase far more than they are. I also think the surgeon should have someone in...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

Well, the staples are out and I'm past the 2 week mark now, so I have a couple of new exercises to do daily. Things are going pretty well, and I have literally no pain, just what feels like the occasional swelling in my hip joint after walks or some exercises. I think things are going well...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

Well, a bit of a lie down and a large glass of water seem to have helped immensely. Thanks for all the suggestions! On another topic, how often were you told to change your dressing? We were sent home with one extra pad and told (by the nurse) that she wouldnt change the dressing more than...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

Well, the swelling continues apace, it's worse at the end of the day, to the point where its almost impossible to do my exercises, but in the morning I feel pretty good and can do a few rounds before I get out of bed. The stool softeners have worked well, I have become fairly regular again...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

@geneva, thanks for the suggestions. I guess since I've never been through this before I just thought it would be just another minor annoyance. Not so much. I'm going to go back to my regular bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and try eating some more fruit and see where that leads. Actually I...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

My wife was kind enough to get me some stool softener, and it seems to have worked, I just wish I'd taken that before I tried to use the brute force method to clear up the problem. There is also a glycerine suppository which was very soothing, and the combination seems to have...moved things...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful responses. It's very heartening to have such positive thoughts directed my way during these early days. The first few days have been a little difficult, but not entirely from the hip area, mostly I've had really bad constipation and in trying to...

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

Thanks. I have to admit, I wasn't so understanding initially, but I really could sympathize with losing a loved one, and when she apologized to me, I just melted. I'm on day 4 now and dealing with a few issues of my own, so I'll be posting those shortly. Cheers

THR Well, I made it....but it was a rough ride

Surgery was Jan 21st at 8am. Up at 3:45am to take shower and drive 2 hours to arrive at hospital for 6am, needless to say very little sleep. Taken in and surgery performed with spinal block and sedative at 8am. Taken to recovery at about 10:30 and into semi-private room at 12:30. The doctor...

52 and have to decide by tomorrow for early THR/Resurfacing

Update: I'm scheduled for the 21st, so only a week or so to go. My nervousness levels are increasing daily, but at this point I just want to get it over with. Any advice on preparing my house for the recovery? I bought one of those grabber things (which my daughter thought was the greatest...

52 and have to decide by tomorrow for early THR/Resurfacing

Hi Sage, It's funny that you bring this up, as I was just thinking the same thing a few minutes ago. I have done all of my research and committed to a date, now I think the best thing I can do is literally turn it all off and just trust in the doctors and nurses who will be performing the...

52 and have to decide by tomorrow for early THR/Resurfacing

Hi DG, Thanks for the post. It's great to hear that your operation was a success and your recovery is going so well. I'm trying to put it out of my mind for now as I've accepted the operation date and would like to focus on Christmas (it's my favourite time of year, I've never lost the...

@DG, By now I'm guessing you've already had your surgery and are well on your way to a (hopefully) quick recovery and a pain-free life. Thanks for your informative post and I hope to see you back here soon regaling everyone with tales of long walks and pain-free activities. I guess I should...
