I have had to postpone my Dec 12th surgery. I found out a few days ago that both of my femurs have osteoporosis (T scores -2.5). My regular dr suggested I have a bone scan since I'm postmenopausal by a few yrs and also have had (treated) hypothyroidism for over a decade. What timing !
I am...
That's great news that you were able to increase your bone density so fast! I guess you did not have to use meds? Just weight bearing exercise and supplements? Cool. I can't believe that my femurs are affected because I've been lifelong runner, xc skier, and hiker and have logged over 10K steps...
Thank you Kayaknlady for the great post ! Wow- someone who had the same experience I'm having. Glad to hear you are doing so well :) Keep on truckin!
Unfortunately it looks like I am going to have to post pone the BTKR, probably for another year. I just found out yesterday that I have...
Ugh ! My naturopath dr suggested I get a bone scan before surgery since I hadn't had one and I'm a few years postmenopausal. Well I just found out that I do have osteoporosis and the dr. wants to meet with me this afternoon. More tests are in order.
My surgeon uses the Stryker Triathlon, which...
I have an ice machine question- don't know if this is the right place to ask, but we are talking about pain relief and icing. I have an older motorized EB ICE ice machine from meniscus surgery in 2012. It only has a small knee pad attachment. The machine is no longer made. Does anyone know if...
I definitely have some distorted tendons/ligaments in the worse knee. Probably related to bone spurs. I have had a pain that comes and goes, traveling from behind the knee and up the back of the leg. Using a foam roller over all muscle/tendon areas in my legs has helped I think.
After taking...
The xrays show just how "bad" they are. And hiking down the mountain this summer was pretty awful (with thigh bursitis following). Also stopped bicycling towards the end of the summer. So yes the knees do need replacing. I just don't have the day to day pain most others have. This has been noted...
Really reconsidering surgery next week. This is a long post...
When I scheduled surgery at the end of the summer I was having more discomfort with my athletic endeavors and this has been my main driving force for surgery- keep active, cycling, long family vacations hikes. I developed...
I am a few days preop and have had tendon/ ligament pain starting behind and heading up the back of my leg. It has woken me up at night even and mainly affects my worse leg. I have found that using a foam roller over all my leg muscles has helped. Never use a roller on boney surfaces though.
I hope to go back to ice skating (straight skating, no tricks), which is similar to online skating, after my upcoming BTKR. I do have inline skates too...hmmm, may have to give them a try after surgery recovery too :) From what I've been able to determine, your knee choice goes pretty much with...
Celle: Boy, the surgeons can sure have a wide range of knee replacement protocols. What I have heard mostly about the first couple of weeks post op is that you need to do PT to prevent scar tissue from forming, to make sure you get the best bend. This is the first I've heard about NO PT for the...
My surgeon uses Lovenox injections (for a month) after surgery to reduce the chance of blood clot formation. In researching this, however, I find that there are many foods and supplements that I would not be able to use for a long time. For example, I plan to use some "natural" pain relievers...
As the surgery date gets closer, I keep swaying back and forth as to whether to go through with bilateral knee replacements right now. My main goal is to be able to hike with my family on the big camping/hiking ventures we have always done. I plan to do more of this as retirement awaits in a...
