Depression/post-op blues - open for all

It is good to recognize the roller coaster is common to almost everyone. The replacement of both hips and my newest knee surgery have all brought ups and downs (mostly downs). Expecting it, my last two surgeries, I planned a way to, even for a short time, to get off the rollercoaster each day...

Depression/post-op blues - open for all

I think journaling is an incredible therapeutic tool that many ignore. Journaling for yourself. I noticed that even in my regular (pre-CoVid and when my emotional rollercoaster was off the tracks) therapy sessions, my therapist did not look at the pages. She would ask “So, tell me more...

    ACL/MCL Repair One more dance!

Six weeks completed, getting to know my new ACL and surrounding support systems well! Somewhat stiff and cranky, especially in the morning….which is to be expected. Return to full time work, elevating-icing-resting is hard to coordinate sometimes. In other words recovery slow and steady. I...

Depression/post-op blues - open for all

I am 5 years past my first THR and do agree that the emotional rollercoaster does smooth out. I think it is hardest when there is not experience in asking for help, being ”in need of help” or even talking to someone. I have had a very long career as a nurse, from a time when you were...

    ACL/MCL Repair One more dance!

Very wise words!! Am walking with crutches & without brace (inside) and feeling less restricted and actually moving smoother. Although I think I may have he brace bronzed …$900.00 was more than I paid for my first child!! I am so grateful for the daily dose of “have patience with yourself” I...

    ACL/MCL Repair One more dance!

It is so easy to get sucked into the “if you build up your strength” you can…stop wearing the brace, use one crutch instead of two, drive, go back to work, ( ) fill in the blank!! That is why I like to read the posts here. A more accurate picture of the recovery road! I try not to...

    ACL/MCL Repair One more dance!

4 weeks out from the knee surgery A bit surprised at the amount of swelling that is still going on, which of course limits my movements. Building back my “quad strength” is challenging. It is like my muscles just checked out of the function department……. But as soon as I get the strength...

    ACL/MCL Repair One more dance!

Second THR recovered nicely. Post replacement about 18 months. No pain and full mobility. So here I am again with my friend the ice machine, pillow, and sleeping in the chair (can not get up the stairs yet). About a year after the hip replacement restarted my Martial Arts activity. This time...

    THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

Do not think so. My husband has a card for his hip and the mechanical valve in his heart…still gets searched. My communication challenges were the most amusing.. guess can always offer to show off battle scars! I for one appreciate the security in the crazy times here in the U.S!

    THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

Just thought of one funny part of our trip I wanted to share about traveling with more metal parts in my body… In 10 (round trip) plane changes I did set off the metal detector each time. I prepared by wearing a very lightweight outfit and no jewelry. Each time was hand searched 2-3 times...

    THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

Just over 6 months post surgery: Have been home from the Amazon Adventure now for about 2 weeks. The Amazon trip was an incredible experience!! (33 hr plane ride was VERY long but was broken up into 5 plane changes!) This trip was to celebrate my husband’s 70th birthday. Guess we could have...

    THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

Post surgery 5 months. Walking, moving and dancing without much pain, a fading scar the only constant reminder. Tomorrow we are off to explore a remote tributary of the Amazon river. Fly into the area in a small plane and land on the river. Jungle living at the basic level. Carrying in the...

    THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

Post surgery: 3 months! Return to work at 7 weeks was a bit stressful…fatigued very quickly. Hard to concentrate at times. Have been dancing twice, it is so nice to be able to dance again. I do still have to modify some of the steps, especially the turning on my right foot ones. This new hip...

    THR Navigating Recovery...the sequel

7 weeks completed….tomorrow (June 28th) is return to work day. Incision healing with a small area of the skin that opened up where the infection was. I think the initial irritation came from my underpants rubbing. Took my scissors and made a small cut on the leg opening so nothing is...

THR So far, so good, knock wood

Happy 2 months. I am impressed with your mile walk…I am still stuck at 1/2 mile followed by ice and rest. Incision is well healed so I am planning to see if walking in our above ground pool will add some endurance.
