Revision TKR Lovetocookandsew’s long road to recovery

@Pumpkln I'm about the same. I'm waiting until the one year mark, then having another bone scan to see if it still shows 'hot' or not. Then we'll go from there. I am also waiting to hear back from the scar nurse about the keloids. I'm so glad you are doing well-you've had a rough go and it's time for you to have some smooth sailing.
@Nana moon 27 I've been soooooooo busy I haven't done much more than quick limericks. I have to sit a few minutes here and there to help my knee so I sometimes take those brief moments to post limericks. I do read others' posts, but by the time I read them they already have tons of replies that have said everything I would have, so I haven't posted too much lately. As for posting in my thread, nothing has changed, so I was waiting until after the bone scan to do an update. Thanks for missing me though.:)

Well the main thing is you're ok. It's not long til your one year mark.. I cannot believe how fast it's gone...wow!

I know what you mean about replying to posts. What I do these days is I just press the like or friendly button, when I encounter a post that's busy.

I'm ever so glad to hear from you. Your avatar is stunning x x x

I like the limericks because they challenge your brain in an enjoyable non stressing way. I lie here howling with laughter esp at Aunties knickers falling down. That was class. Whenever I did naughty limericks at one time, chestnc used to tag in and say Bad Nana with a wagging finger in fun. It was really funny xxx it's a nice easy place to be at night when you're fed up and you can have some harmless fun x x x

@Nana moon 27 My knee is actually not really okay-it's still quite swollen and painful. I actually fell the other day-I think somehow my knee gave out on me. I was just standing buttoning my jeans and the next thing I knew I was falling. It happened so fast I don't know exactly what happened, but I am grateful I wasn't seriously hurt. My right wrist was totally bent in the fall and was a bit strained, and my TKR knee was bent backwards painfully under me-but other than a few bumps, bruises and strains I was okay. Luckily I fell inside on our nice soft carpet-if it was outside and I hit the cement things could have been worse. How are you doing these days?

Im doing ok since the revision. Had a bit of a setback this past week. I wrenched both knees and had to rest them for almost a week. The TKR is reacting like a normal Knee now most of the time. Unfortunately I'm waiting for a surgery date on the left knee. That's needs replacing. They said within the next few months it will be done. X x x x

Take care love Ann x x x x

I'm almost at 1 year out. On Thursday, I see my plastic surgeon to see what can be done for the long keloid my scar formed. It itches like crazy, and burns when my knee is bent, which wakes me at night, plus makes it difficult to sit for very long. I am also going to be speaking with my OS on April 8th and will likely have another bone scan, then go from there. I still have so much swelling I am unable to ride my bike now or bend it as much as I could if the swelling were gone as it should be by now. We'll discuss all the possible scenarios, and see what comes of it. My right knee area measures a full 2 inches larger than my left knee area; before the surgery there was swelling also, but I think it was more like an inch difference back then. I still have pain, more than I think I should have by now. A couple of weeks ago as I was buttoning my jeans, I was standing one second, the next second I was falling and hit the floor hard. My knee got totally bent under my body and it hurt like the dickens. I have no clue what happened as I was just standing, but as I thought back later I think my knee somehow gave out all of a sudden and caused the fall. Luckily I fell on the carpeted floor and not cement or a roadway. Hopefully we'll soon get it all figured out and I can leave the knee problems behind and move on.

Oh @lovetocookandsew

I'm sorry to read you're still having a rough time of things. I hope hat you get some answers off the OS on the 8th!! The fall sounds worrying. Yes best to get checked out x

My thoughts are with you

It is our one year anniversary, just checking in to see how you are doing? What is your OS saying?

Thanks @Nana moon 27 ! @Pumpkln , I have an appointment next week for another bone scan. It's still swollen way too much and giving me fits at times. I actually fell a few weeks ago-my knee just kind of gave on me and I hit the floor hard. I'll let you know the results. How are you doing? And Happy ankneeversary to you.

Sorry you have to have another bone scan, the results should be no surprise given your knee is swollen and painful. Ouch, hitting the floor with your knee. I would have gone through the roof.
You can read about my scar tissue in my thread, my knee is better since having some intensive gait training and reducing pressure on the outside of my leg.
Let us know about your bone scan and what your OS says,

I agree with @kneesrus GO HOME! I went to a rehab facility for 5 nights. I should have gone home. They never saw to it that I elevated & iced my leg. They never brought me the pain med as directed by my doc. So I would wait as long as I could take the pain & then when I finally had to ask for it they took 1-2 hrs to get to me. Meanwhile my knee continued to swell up & felt like a brick wall. I believe that if I was icing & elevating like I had learned from this forum consistently I would be further ahead in my recovery. I wish you the best.

@Pumpkln and all.......I had my bonescan last Thursday. (I was scheduled for mid-April but had to cancel and the 7th was the first app't I could make out of the 20 times they gave me...lol ) The OS says it's "still lighting up" and he's going to confer with the specialist and then get back to me. I have no idea why it's still hot-hopefully they can figure it out. All I know is it's still quite swollen and still giving me fits.

lovetocookandsew,
Hoping they get to the bottom of your knee problems.
Lighting up, with pain, swelling, and ROM that could be better, leads me to think inflammation. I know you develop scaring and keloids, that may be one answer.
I would ask to see the specialist so he can examine your knee and get a better feel for what is going on in your knee.

@Pumpkln I actually did see the specialist a while back, remember? I didn't like him so I will ask my OS for a new one if needed. He did just email me this evening and say let's hold off on surgery if possible which surprised me since I'm not thinking surgery at this point. I'm thinking small infection maybe, maybe metal allergy, etc. But I will speak to him soon as I did reply back to him and let him know I want to get to the bottom of this so I can get my life back. I can't ride my bike, take long walks, cut my toenails (!) or even dance much at my daughter's upcoming wedding. It's almost as confining as before the surgery. It's also got a new kind of popping it's doing and some days it swells so much I have to get off it. I didn't expect it to be as good as new, but I did expect it to be pretty good by now....sigh.

I had forgotten you had seen the specialist earlier and did not like him. I hope you can get another opinion from someone you like. Until you get to the bottom of what is causing your problems you really cannot move forward.
Keep searching you will find the answer.

@Pumpkln I'm going to have a new bone scan now. It's a white blood cell scan (I'm sure you know what that is) to look for infection. It took a while for my OS to get the specialist's opinion as he's been out of town until today. My OS has called me several times, and called me this am as soon as he spoke to the specialist. He's also ordering a knee brace that will be made specifically for my knee as it's been getting a bit more unstable. He says if it comes up infected, we'll talk about that, if not then we have to decide where to go from there. He's totally frustrated not knowing what's going on and so am I.

I had not heard of a white blood cell scan, looked it up and it sounds interesting. Hope this test helps you to get to the bottom of what is causing your swelling and pain. The knee brace will help with the instability.
@Josephine might know more about this white blood cell scan?

There are different types of white blood cells
  • Monocytes. They have a longer lifespan than many white blood cells and help to break down bacteria.
  • Lymphocytes. They create antibodies to defend against bacteria, viruses, and other potentially harmful invaders.
  • Neutrophils. They kill and digest bacteria and fungi. They are the most numerous type of white blood cell and your first line of defence when infection strikes.
  • Basophils. These small cells appear to sound an alarm when infectious agents invade your blood. They secrete chemicals such as histamine, a marker of allergic disease, that help control the body's immune response.
  • Eosinophils. They attack and kill parasites, destroy cancer cells, and help with allergic responses.
A higher-than-normal white blood cell count usually indicates some type of infection - white blood cells are multiplying to destroy an enemy, such as bacteria or a virus. Other conditions, such as extreme physical stress caused by an injury or emotional stress, can trigger high white blood cell levels, as can inflammation, labor or the end of pregnancy, smoking, or even extreme exercise.

So the differential count of the blood cells can give quite a potent picture of what's going on in the patient's body.
