THR First five days after surgery

I had my last doctor checkup for the year this morning. Everything looked very good except for a weakness in one muscle, which he gave me an exercise for. He said I didn't have to wear the stretch socks anymore and didn't need any more blood medication (which was fortunate, since that stuff cost...

THR First five days after surgery

I switched the walker for a cane a couple of days ago, and the physical therapist I saw this morning said I may even be able to give that up in a week. I'm down to 1-2 pain meds a day, and I'm not even that sure I need that. I'll probably stick with that for another 20 days, then unless I go...

THR First five days after surgery

I still use the walker except when I go to the gym; it is just too cumbersome to lug around there. The temperatures have taken a nosedive in this part of the country the past week, and that has kept me from using the walker outside, which is what I was doing before this cold spell. Maybe I need...

THR First five days after surgery

Finally got around to seeing the physical therapist this morning (the first time since 3 Nov). We didn't do much, but he did point out how lousy my walking form was. I picked up some very bad habits during the 4 years I've been dealing with arthritis, so I have a lot to unlearn. I'll get there...

THR First five days after surgery

Got back to the Gym today. I managed 30 minutes at a speed in the low 2's on the treadmill while gripping the bars on the side. It was actually easier than walking outside using the walker. I'm trying to get accustomed to using a cane. It is more work than the walker, but not much more. I'm...

THR First five days after surgery

I don't think I've overworked anything yet, and I don't have any intentions of adding to what I'm doing for at least another week. I'm hoping the physical therapist I'm supposed to see will give me some guidance, but who knows when I'll get to see her again. They never did call after the...

THR First five days after surgery

I feel like I'm about a week ahead of the progression in that article. I'm not feeling any particular discomfort during the walks, and don't feel any unusual soreness afterwards. I'm used to physical activity, so I need to do more than walk around the house or I'll go nuts.

THR First five days after surgery

This was my busiest day in terms of walking. I did a couple of laps around a park and wandered through a couple of stores with my wife. I felt a little tired at the end of the store trips, but it wasn't too bad. I've done 3380 steps today, which is six percent more than my previous best after...

THR First five days after surgery

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have any problems sleeping or lying down; just sitting on certain chairs. We're trying polysporine, and that seemed to help some today. I'll try the towel thing tomorrow. It is more than a little annoying to be bothered more by a sore than the operation. A...

THR First five days after surgery

Just saw the doctor this morning to have the staples removed. He was very satisfied with how everything looked. My mobility is good, except for moving my left leg up and down. I should be able to do that in a couple of weeks. He said I could start driving again, but would have to wait until my...

THR First five days after surgery

Hi @toohip - I've gone from two pills to one a few times already and the only thing I've noticed is that the initial effect is stronger with 2 pills. I'll go back to 2 if I'm feeling more discomfort. Given the location of the sore, it is definitely from all the sitting. Annoying, but nothing...

THR First five days after surgery

I took a fall today in the living room, getting the walker tangled up in wires or something. I was lucky this time. I just have to remember to be more careful with the walker while wearing the stretch socks, which are slippery on hard floors. I've tried to do a better job icing and elevating...

THR First five days after surgery

Went to see the physical therapist for the first time this morning. She said I should be icing and elevating between 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a day, so I'm going to try and stick to that. My efforts at icing were very lame before (I doubt I even had the icepack on the bandage half the time), so...

THR First five days after surgery

I thought I’d toss some thoughts in here in case my experience, such as it is right now, could help someone looking forward to what I just went through. The first five days had its ups and downs, but it was mostly manageable. I had the THR surgery on the left hip (for severe osteoarthritis) at...

2014 October Feisties - Are you having hip surgery in October?

Surgery for left hip replacement on 27 October. I made the appointment today, so it definitely wasn't a long wait. I either wanted it within six weeks or, if that wasn't possible, mid-January for insurance reasons. 27 October sounded quick to me. Looking forward to getting it over with.
