THR THR - One year on

Hi @Gloucestergal65, Glad to hear you are feeling better overall and progressing with your new hip. Resting as you recover is, I am sure, the best way to ensure continued progress. Autumn seems to have arrived suddenly with leaves green one week and all shade of yellow, orange and red the next.
Best wishes

Happy Ten Month Anniversary!
It is nice to hear from you. Enjoy beautiful Autumn and take good care!
@Gloucestergal65

Coming up to my 11 month anniversary in just over a week. Just coming to the end of a week in wild, wet, windy mid Wales. This time I had no anxiety about being away and how I would cope. I have done some short walks and some longer ones on rocky, muddy, slippery, waterlogged, leaf strewn narrow footpaths up steep slopes, down steep slopes, in the rain, in the sunshine. Over fences, over logs, on boardwalks, over stiles. No problems at all. Fantastic.
Still using a stick (two actually) when outside because I still lurch slightly towards the operated side when walking without.
I did the driving here and will in the way back to. Two and a half to three hours. Again no problems. No pain. Just enjoying a glass of wine and packing up.
Thank goodness we live in an age when such things are possible and we can get our lives back.
I’m sorry to hear that some of you are still really struggling and I hope you reach this point too. :martini:

Forgot to mention that I can now sleep in the OS although there is still a small area of slight tenderness there. No idea why but not enough to really bother me.
I post mostly as my own diary of how it all went in case I ever need to go through this again but it’s nice to see other people have read the posts. I still read posts, not as often as I did, and it’s good the hear other people making progress too.

It's great to get back to life isn't it? Those early days we struggle but then the big reward comes!
Keep in touch and post once in awhile, gives the newbies a sense of what the first year is like and that it does get better.
Stay well.

Felled by a nasty snotty cough the last few days so feeling a bit down. Can’t sleep at night for coughing although extra pillows have helped a bit. As a result I keep dropping off during day. Have hardly moved from bed to sofa and back again.
Otherwise all good with the hip - well almost. Still a slight tender spot but smaller. I’ve been massaging with BioOil which seems to be helping. I can walk about without a stick but as I get tired I limp more (more of a small check than a limp really) and I start to feel a bit unstable. Standing for an hour in the cold wasn’t the best idea either. I now have a fold-up cane that I can carry in my handbag so I can take it for reassurance.
My annual appointment with the OS is next week - it’ll be a year on the 12th December.
Perhaps it’s time to change my title to
One year post op
On a completely different subject, my partner is having trouble with his knee. When he gets up from sitting, it sort of gives way and makes him limp until he gets going. He is very stoic and if the opinion it will get better if it’s own accord. He hasn’t knowingly hurt it. Anyone got any thoughts/advice other than mine which is see your GP, get it xrayed, see a physio, find out what the cause is (other than age - he’s 64)!

Sorry about the cold - seems there's lots of colds / flu / Covid about at the moment. Good your hip is doing well :yay:
Agree with your advice to hubby but if anything like mine it will go in one ear and out the other!

Hi @Gloucestergal65,

Congratulations on upcoming hip-anniversary! That’s so excited and once you pass the rough patches in hip surgery, the recovery flies by. I can’t believe I’ll be 6 months post-op in a few days!

In my part of the US so many people have been getting sick! I’ve had myself, a few friends, and my brother’s family all sick. Lots of December rain and cold drops, plus Thanksgiving just passed, so tis the season!

Will your hubby be accompanying you to your annual visit? Maybe your doctor can recommend a colleague for your husband? Otherwise show him the knee bending videos from physical therapy, post a total knee LOL.

Personally, bearing in mind that you are in the UK and how long the wait times are, I would definitely recommend that your hubby starts the ball rolling now, just to get some answers/help. Prior to going private I waited over 27 weeks to get an appointment with a specialist physio therapist, who I had to see first before being passed on to Orthopedics and my GP referred me to them urgently. Heaven knows how long it would take if you're not considered an urgent case !

Glad to know it is going well GG. I used BioOil this time around too
And it does make a difference…

I need to up my excercise a bit but otherwise going well. Is it snowi g where you are?

@SurreyGirl - no snow but it has been really cold. Currently raining. My exercise has plummeted this week so I need to get back into it.

Hi Gloucester!
And early congrats on one year anniversary approaching.
So many have the dreadful cough, my DIL had it 3 weeks.
Men hate admitting anything is wrong, my partner is same, he also says in time it will get better no matter what the issue is.
I tore my meniscus a long time ago. My knee was so swollen, I went to OS and he drained it gave me cortisone shot and I felt like I could run the marathon. He did not advise surgery, said a lot of times surgery fixes one issue and just weakens another area. So here's what I did for about 3 months. Support sleeve for knee, Iced & elevated when sitting. also OTC pain relieving gels ( I like Biofreeze), rubbed on knee.
It healed on it's own, had MRI about 3 months later and it was fine.
All my best.

Yes, Gloucestergal, it certainly is possible.
Just let us know what you'd like your new thread title to be and we'll change it for you.
Hope you have a great weekend...holiday season too!
