THR Quad pain

Interesting how many if our implants look different. My 2 look a little different, my rt. has a small protrusion that sits on the femur like it prevents it from going deeper, my left doesn't have it and they are both the same brand.

Wow! comparing x-rays. The shaft of the replacement slipped own over 5/16" splitting the bone slowly as it slipped over days. I was told to push off with my (r) foot harder to get it back to even. Guessing I pushed off to hard and it slowly started slipping over time. Glad I had it looked at before it split fully apart.

Is this common, sliding deeper into femur as you walk?

I am sure this has all been thought of but I had a broken femur and non Union of the break. I seem to be doing okay with THR but am getting full work up from bone metabolism specialist to look for underlying reasons. So far so good but I will have more studies in six months. Remodeling of bones, processing calcium, DEX scans etc.

Hi. I just read through your thread and wanted to check in to see how your surgery went on Wednesday? Hope you’re feeling well!

Surgeon says April 10th revision and femur repair were successful. 2 days in hospital, now home. Non- weight bearing for six weeks. Over 12" scar with nifty Prevena Plus 125 to apply negative pressure to wound.
Pain so great this morning that twice I went into cold sweat going into shock.
Even though non- weight bearing, I am pretty much bedridden. Too painful to go more than a few steps on walker. I did better in hospital but they had me on 4 times the pain pills.
Hoping to heal over this next 6 weeks. Photo are x-rays of new hip and bands. So long, it took 2 x-rays.
My total knee replacement was much easier than the broken femur hip revision

Ugh! That's some pain! I am so sorry.
I hope the coming days are more tolerable so you're able to be comfortably mobile.
Best Wishes!
@jsykas

Layla, thank you. Not trying to complain but inform that this revision broken femur surgery is quite invasive.
I am progressing on pace

@jsykas i am so sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. I’m glad you’re home now. I am in awe (not in a good way) of your X-rays. That is some extensive repair!! I hope you continue to heal and the pain starts to get better soon.

That looks like a lot of work got done . We’re all hoping for a smooth recovery for you…

Save for initial pain from large incision and more invasive surgery, this operation is much different. The constant knee pain is gone, the reoccurring shooting pains are gone and the constant quad pain is gone. Something was never right with last femoral stem. I don't think it ever set. As I have 8" break in femur, I will be non weight bearing for at least another 5 weeks. And if course that is causing a tennis elbow flare up. But still nice to be on the mend, so no complaints. Anyone else get tennis elbow from non weight bearing? If so, how is it treated?

@jsykas Lots of folks report problems with elbow, or shoulder, or hands when having to use crutches for extended periods of time. Alas the best treatment for those problems is not doing the activity that causes them. For interim relief you can apply ice to the elbow and ask your surgeon or primary care doctor about anti-inflamatory medication.

Again, with 15" scar from butt down thigh, ties around still broken femur; this posterior revision operation is so much less painful than the 1st anterior with only 4" scar. The original gave me knee pain and quad pain and finally loosened and split my femur. I was concerned as I was progressing so slowly.
Everyone had told me I was proceeding well and we all heal at different rates. No clue that it was seriously flawed.
Currently, non weight bearing, but I feel like I could run if they let me. What a difference. Still no clue what was wrong the 1st operation, but if I get another on the other side, I will know

@jsykas wow what a journey you have had! From you last post I gather you are doing much better! Did the same surgeon do both the original and revision? You may have said but U can’t remember. Also the break didn’t show up in first X-ray after surgery?

Nina
Yes, same surgeon. 1st surgery was Feb 1, 2024. X-ray March 15th showed clean (buy I had both knee pain and shooting pains and was behind on recovery). PT instructed me to push off more with implant leg when standing or walking.
The very next day, the 16th, walking to a funeral, I did push harder with right leg with implant. When I left the service my leg was sore so we didn't stat for dinner. Got home, more sore so quickly did farm chores so I could rest it early. The next day, I couldn't walk. Ortho told me I probably overworked it and to take it easy for 5 weeks. I continued PT, but canceled the upcoming appointment. After two weeks, I called and said it was not improving. On March 28th, I had a CT scan. On April 1st, ortho nurse called and told me I was non weight bearing for five weeks. I sent scan to my primary. He told me to immediately contact the surgeon. Surgeon, I think, April 5th said I need immediate surgery, spiral fracture full length of implant. I noticed that implant was 3/8" deeper into femur than on the March 15th X-ray. Guessing the implant never set good causing the continuing knee and shooting pain and later when I pushed off on it walking it just moved deeper and deeper till it fully split the bone.

@jsykas thank you! I wanted to relay all this to my husband and wanted to make sure I had it all in order! I still don’t understand why after you CT scan the only response you got from the nurse was to be non weight bearing for 5 weeks and then surgeon said immediate surgery! I am so glad you were proactive and didn’t wait the full five weeks! And you are on your way to be healed!

I am not sure why my primary took the CT scan more seriously than the main nurse. But when I called after my primary requested I see a surgeon, she got me in the next day. Surgeon ordered an x-ray and the spiral break showed very clearly. The nurse had the clean x-rays from March 15th and may have just read CT report and thought it was hairline. Don't know. I am just so glad I decided to contact my primary via text and that he immediately was able to view the CT and reply in under an hour. With the implant 3/8" deeper into my femur, waiting would have done nothing to help. Getting more than one opinion is key. Thank you for your interest
