THR New Hip -Now bionic!!<

Oh @Cas I am so glad you saw your GP! You poor thing - this is a horrid flu. Get some rest and take those meds. And remember this is only a minor setback. You need to regain your strength to get back to recovery from surgery. Please take care and keep us updated! :console2:

@Cas Sounds like you've really been hit hard! Hopefully the meds will get you on track for recovering.

@Cas, it's good you saw the doctor and have those 3 treatments going. I hope you'll be feeling better soon! I just wanted to tell you my cautionary tale about steroids. I had bronchitis last summer after I tried CPAP and started wheezing immediately and eventually ended up with a steroid pack. Often when you take them you feel so much better that there is a real temptation to do too much. Three days after starting the steroid, I suffered a compression fracture in my spine. I know that my vertebra are at risk for fracture because of osteopenia/osteoporosis, and that the vertebra would have probably fractured at some other point in the future, but those darned steroids had me feeling so great and energized that I was lifting heavier things and racing around without my walking aids, bending over quickly to pick things up, and generally not being careful with my body. From now on, if I have to take steroids again, I will be very cautious and not overdo things.

May you be on the road to recovery from all of your current ills!

So sorry about the bronchitis. I've had it all my life and I know how grueling it is. Again, the prescription is REST. Do as little as possible, even talking. I think we're all run down and exhausted. Week after week of Recovery takes its toll. I know you always try to be cheerful. You're always there to lend a helping hand. But, guess what, you're human. What you've gone through has been very draining, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I'll bet once the steroids kick in and you get a few naps under your belt you'll feel much better. Remember - one day at a time. Sending a big hug your way - Barbara

burning the midnight oil once again. Can't sleep at the moment. Think I'm turning into a night owl!

Oh dear, bet it's the flu that's keep you awake. Sleep during the day if you can. Hope you are starting to beat this flu!

@Cas Been lolling around the house feeling sorry for myself. Been trying to wean myself slowly off the Percocet but hurt so much this morning I upped the dosage, dropped all my plans for the day, and hit the bed.

How have you been feeling? Did you finally get over the flu? Are you still having moments of normalcy? [emoji4]

I never thought 3 months in, I'd be in this position. I thought the pain was diminishing - but seems to have increased (hopefully temporarily).

The Percocet has killed my appetite - wish I'd be seeing the scale diminish as a consequence.

How is your pain level? What Meds do you take for the pain? I'm seeing my Rheumatologist tomorrow. My Surgeon thinks my Fibromyalgia may be causing some of the pain. We shall see.

Gosh - I sound gloomy. I'm usually an upbeat person but this surgery sometimes gets the better of me. Hope this post finds you feeling well. Since you're in England I hope you're in the middle of a peaceful sleep. Take care - Barbara

@baclectic morning from the UK. It's 7.42 am here. So sorry you're feeling so down. Know what you mean about the surgery taking it out of you. Still don't feel up to actually socialising with anyone as I get so tired just listening to people and I have to keep getting up before I stiffen LOL! Also their toilets are still too low to be comfy using them. You are two weeks ahead of me in the post op scales. Am only just getting over the flu and still have the drained feeling - read on news this am that chris evans had the same thing and nearly died - it has been a real nasty but think I'm on the mend now - at least I can breathe now !!!! I was on oxycodin, brufen and paracetamol meds to start with and started to wean off them about week 6-7. Am now on paracetamol only starting this week. So it's taken 10 weeks to get to this point. It also happened quite suddenly. One day I was in a lot of pain and then a couple of days later I realised it was much better so don't give up hope it will get better. I still get pain if I do too much but then I just swallow a couple of pills, rest and ice and it wears off after a bit. Also get very stiff after walking too far. It's a long road to go yet. When you think that at 12 weeks we are only a quarter of the way through recovery we are doing well. it can't help that you are by yourself as there is no one to talk things through with or pass the time with - the days can tend to drag. Keep going and keep warm - this weather doesn't help the old bones! Am always here for a moan or to share your successes - just a click away. Carol

One day I was in a lot of pain and then a couple of days later I realised it was much better
Same happened to me post both THRs. Just stick to it my friends. There is an end to this bumpy road!

@Cas Hi Carol. It seems I have a stomach virus. Am totally nauseated and running a low grade fever. Have been calling my surgeon's office - they don't return my calls. Am disappointed in the medical profession today. [emoji4]. At any rate I'm certainly glad you're better. You deserve a medal for coping with being sick for weeks along with your poor hip trying to recover. Hopefully it's all sunshine ahead for you. I sure hope this is a 24 hour virus. I've had enough!!

@baclectic Morning Barbara . Bless you , you do seem to be having a rough time of it. It's awful when people don't get back to you. You have enough to cope with in your recovery without feeling that no one in the medical section cares enough to get back to you. We don't have any contact with our OS once the 8 week check up is over until they see us again a year later so everything is done through our GP. I'm fortunate in the fact I live in a small village so we can usually see a doctor within a day or two. I know with a virus over here they only recommend paracetamol for fever and lots of fluids and rest - not much help when you feel so bad! The nausea can be awful. I don't know if it helps but when I feel sick I try to eat something - usually savoury LOL! Logic is it will settle my stomach or make me sick! Weird thinking but I usually feel better after some food in my tum - gives the juices something to work on. Hope you get some joy from your OS later today. Let me know how you get on - thinking of you often. Carol

It's lovely - waking in the middle of the night - and hearing from you. I love your philosophy - it'll either settle or come back up. I've been sipping on ginger ale, Chamomile Tea, and ice chips. Also trying to cut my pain Meds down as they mess up my stomach too. Isn't life grand!! Think I'll have a cracker - in honor of you. See how that sits. Since it's taking so long for my hip to recover, and some muscles still feel sore, I thought an MRI might be in order to make sure all the soft tissue look okay. My GP didn't want to see me - said call your Surgeon - and we know how that went. I may just insist on seeing my GP. He's really a good guy whom I've always liked. At any rate, hope this post finds you well and cheerful. Have a great day, my Friend. :)

Hello @Cas - well you've had rough time. I also fell victim to flu at Christmas and wonder if we are a little prone to picking up these nasty bugs because our bodies have been through the mill right on top of a busy time? It took a while to shake it off but I do finally feel better and I hope you'll pick up again soon.

I noticed you mention the SheWee for loo visits away from home. I bought one (via Amazon) mostly for reassurance to carry in my bag when out. Fortunately I rarely had a problem finding a suitable disabled loo - but one time I hadn't got the dear gadget with me I spent a while ouching in the cubicle as I struggled with aching hips (wonder if anyone heard me?). Now it sits in the glovebox in the car for prospective walking trips out in the countryside in case of emergencies (and grandaughter's surprise announcements at awkward times). If you get one I suggest a trial run in the shower first. They are used by female personnel in the forces when out on the field so are tried and tested.

As far as travel and our hips are concerned I was told by my surgeon not to fly for 3 months. The hips and electronic detectors will be interesting. I visited a high security site on a biz trip after HipOp #1 and set the alarm off. I rather excitedly explained "Oh that will be my new hip" and was slightly disappointed when the security guard told me it was the bunch of bangles on my wrist. Shucks

10 WEEK UPDATE

thought I'd do an update as the last one was at week 6.

1. Pain level is 1-3 varying on a daily basis depending on how much I do.
2. Painkillers now down to only paracetamol 2x500 3 times a day.
However may need something a bit stronger as my back is now playing up.
3. Before xmas my daughter lent me her old fitbit and I was averaging 800 -900 steps.
Then the dog ate the strap!
In January I treated myself to a fitbit Alta in the sales and on
Tuesday walked 1.32 miles around the downstairs of our house.
Yesterday walked 2.62 miles around house and out food shopping.
This was TOO much as I was sore and tired last night and today am resting more.
I now know my limit is about 1.5 miles so will stick to this for a while.
4. Can now get in and out of my car easily and driving is a pleasure.
5. In and out of bed is a breeze and am now sleeping on my side again with no discomfort _ BLISS!
6. Now have a fold up cane that I carry in my shoulder bag - yes it's heavy but I know I have an aid if I need it.
7. Now do basic housework, hovering, dusting, washing and cooking meals. Need help changing beds though and haven't tried window cleaning yet!

At last I can see how much I've improved. I still have a long journey ahead but I'm getting there. This site is wonderful and will keep you updated as I go along. Can't thank everyone on here enough for all the support and help you have given me. Just need to get my back sorted as that is holding me back at the moment as it can be very painful when walking. I am taking my recovery slowly in the hope I have no setbacks and my hip has a chance to heal nice and strong.

I hope my post will help others along their journey knowing there is a positive outcome so keep at it it's worth it.

@Miss Muffet LOL what a shame it was only your bracelets! Glad you are feeling much better after the flu thing. Think I'm getting better though still have a nasty cough and get out of breath a bit - am still all clogged up - sorry that sounds disgusting. Am back at the doctors on Tuesday for a chest listen and to see if I need any more meds for it. Yes we are bound to be run down after the op and all our energy is used up in the healing process. So are open to all sorts of nasty bugs and this one was particularly bad. Spring is coming I can feel it and it makes me smile. Am looking forward to warm days in the garden and having all the doors and windows open all day again. Will try the weeshee but knowing how clumsy I can be I'll probably wet myself! LOL!! Hope you are doing well. Cheers Carol

@Jaycey Hi there. haven't spoken to you recently. I have a question. Am in real pain in lower back and finding it difficult to walk far as afterwards I am in pain for a couple of days. Do you think it's my old back complaint or do you think I'm maybe expecting too much too soon. The lower back pain has got worse since surgery and is now stopping my recovery. I am booking an appointment with physio. Am also back on co codamol which makes me feel sick if I have too many and also Brufen. Have you any ideas. Thanks Carol

Well I can only comment from my experience. Post my first THR my lower back issues did come back big time. I worked with a back PT who did some deep massage and gave me a few stretches for sciatic pain. It did help. But the trick was finding a back specialist - not just a PT who works on hips and knees.

@Jaycey thank you so much for your reply. How are you doing? I always seem to ask you questions about myself and never ask about you. We must meet up at the bird sanctuary some day for a coffee. CHEERS carol

Doing OK @Cas ! Thanks for asking. Yes, when we get some better weather the Seabird Centre is a wonderful place. Tired of all this dull, grey weather!
